When Jason Mesnick proposed to Melissa Rycroft on the finale of The Bachelor, it seemed like another cookie-cutter season had come to a close. But what happened after the season was unprecedented - at the reunion special, Jason dumped Melissa on live TV and decided he wanted to be with runnerup Molly Malaney instead. Melissa's hurt was palpable, and Jason's smarm was real.
The Real Housewives shows are all about the drama. But when Kelly Bensimon had a breakdown while on a group trip to St. John (nicknamed "Scary Island"), cast members began to realize that she wasn't acting. Kelly was reportedly removed from the house by production in the middle of the night.
Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley's rocky relationship was a major storyline on MTV's Teen Mom. However, when Amber flipped out and attacked Gary, viewers started calling Child Protective Services to report the incident. Amber lost custody of her daughter, Leah, and is facing trial for assault.
The premise of Cheaters was simple: catch men and women cheating on their spouses/partners via hidden camera. But when an enraged guy realized what was going on, he pulled out a knife and stabbed the show's host, Joey Greco. Luckily, Greco made a full recovery.
David Cook wasn't the favorite to win his season of American Idol, even though he never hit the bottom three.
When he beat out David Archuleta for the crown, everybody lost it - David, his mom, his brother, and the entire audience. Adding to the tear factor? Some fans had reportedly chipped in to pay for a medical transport so that David's oldest brother, who had terminal cancer, could attend the finale.

On the Hawaii season of MTV's hit show, cast member Ruthie had a pretty obvious problem with alcohol. Her drinking officially crossed the line when she drove drunk. Luckily, she didn't hurt anyone, but producers stepped in and said that she had to go to rehab.
I don't watch this show, but my sister lobbied hard for this moment to be included. I'll let her explain: "He was brought back for the all-star season, and of course was the one to beat all season, but stupid Mike was catching up with him and the final meals were like soooooo close but Richard won and was just so happy and so weepy and his pregnant wife couldn't be there so he was even weepier and he's like crying into Padma's shoulder."
Ronnie and Sammi's on-and-off relationship was the main storyline of season 3. Most of the time they were just annoying, but when a possibly roided-up Ronnie destroyed all of Sammi's possessions in a fit of rage, the castmates were legitimately freaked out.
Sweet, down-to-earth Shandi was one of the finalists on the first season of Top Model. But when she cheated on her longtime boyfriend in Italy, she called him long-distance to break the news. Both Shandi and her boyfriend's emotions ran the gamut from angry to remorseful to heartbroken, and we believed every moment of it.
It's one thing to stir up trouble and spread rumors in order to get yourself cast as the villain on a reality show. But it's quite another to make up an elaborate lie about your grandmother dying so you can get ahead on a reality show. Survivor's Jonny Fairplay did just that, and by the end of the season it was completely believable that not only did everyone on the show hate him but host Jeff Probst wanted him banned from all future show-related events.
