I think it was round about the time Tom and Nicole split that we all started realizing exactly how bizarre Tom Cruise actually is.

This is one of those couples that never made a whole lot of sense to me. They began dating and got engaged in 2002, but broke it off in 2004. The couple had met on the set of Gigli; I wonder whether this was a case of dating each other's characters, rather than themselves?

Jessica Simpson may have remained a virgin til marriage, but the couple still split in a much-publicized divorce. They married when Jessica was only 22, but split only three years later, citing "irreconcilable differences."

Unfortunately the Simpson women don't have a great track record when it comes to lasting relationships. Like older sister Jessica, Ashlee married young and divorced three years later, again citing "irreconcilable differences."

Another slightly unorthodox couple, I actually kind of liked these two together, but in October 2010, they announced that they had separated. As of March 2011, though, they are reportedly working on their marriage, so maybe there's hope for them yet.

This wacky couple married in July of 2001 and separated in December of that same year; the divorce was finalized on October 15, 2002. They apparently haven't seen each other since, so I think we can assume it wasn't an amicable split.

Billy Crudup is a fantastic actor and I admire him for that; however, I do not admire the fact that he left Mary Louise Parker when she was seven months pregnant.

Weird things happen when you wear a vial of someone's blood around your neck, but unfortunately that doesn't include a lasting marriage. Originally, Jolie and Thornton were going to adopt Maddox together, but in 2002, Jolie adopted him as a single parent. And the rest, as they say...

Possibly the weirdest of the weird couples, I wasn't too surprised when Madonna and Ritchie announced their split; I can't help but think that each of them liked being married to the idea of the other person (Pop superstar! Gritty independent filmmaker! American! Brit! Awesome!) than the actual person. That's got to make relationships difficult for celebs all-round.

I can say only this: How could you cheat on Uma Thurman? SHE'S UMA THURMAN, FOR PETE'S SAKE!

This golden couple met in 1998 and married two years later, but called it quits in 2005. Rumors abound that Pitt fell for Jolie while he was still married to Aniston, though he has always denied it.

They had an affair while they were married to other people; then they separated from their spouses and got married themselves; then they divorced; then they got married again; then they divorced again. And fun times were had by all.

Garner met Foley on the set of Felicity; after their marriage broke up in 2003, she started dating her Alias co-star Michael Varton. Then, in 2004, she got together with Affleck, whom she had met while shooting Daredevil. Though she seems to have had a pattern of dating her costars, again prompting the "character or person?" debate, she, Affleck, and their family seem to be doing fine. Awwww.

This split actually made me genuinely sad. They seemed like they were so great together, and I kind of loved the whole "Oscar-winning couple" thing. Sigh.

Don't get me wrong: He's attractive and talented, but apparently a bit of a cad. He married Sadie Frost (top left) in 1997, had three children with her, and then divorced her in 2003; then he hooked up with Alfie co-star Sienna Miller (top right) and got engaged to her in 2005; she broke off the engagement in 2006 because he cheated on her with the nanny, Daisy Wright (bottom left); then model Samantha Burke (bottom right) became his baby mama in 2009. Quite a track record.
