Here are are some of the best Oscar speeches of the night.
First, Sean Penn accepting the Best Actor award for “Milk”. “You Commie, homo-loving sons of guns,”, a comment in response to the dozens of anti-gay protesters who lined the streets at the traffic blockades in Hollywood Sunday, carrying signs that said: “You are sinners” and “You hate your kids.”
Sean continued: “I did not expect this. I want it to be very clear: I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me. Often. But I am touched by the appreciation.” He also urged “equal rights for everyone” and noted that “Mickey Rourke rises again and he is my brother.”
Next, Kate Winslet accepting the award for Best Actress in “The Reader”. “I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t made a version of this speech when I was 8 years old staring in the bathroom mirror and this was a shampoo bottle,” The Reader actress told the audience. “Well, it’s not a shampoo bottle now. I feel very fortunate to have made it all the way from there to here.”
Penelope Cruz accepts the Best Supporting Actress award for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, and wonders if anyone has fainted up there.
Here’s Hugh Jackman’s opening sketch:
