Exclusive: ‘ABUSERS’ Creator Albert Harris Jr. Promises No Physical Violence On Show

When we first heard about ABUSERS – a new reality show still in development about domestic (and other forms) of abuse – we anticipated the controversy it would create. After all, shows like A&E’s Intervention and Hoarders have become immensely popular despite claims that they are as exploitative as they are educational.

But ABUSERS creator Albert Harris Jr., a former governor’s aide from New Jersey, says shows like Intervention are sickening. “It’s the rubber-neck effect…you don’t actually want to look at someone’s head dangling out the car window, but it’s the reason why we look. We look to see the worst thing that could happen.” He also cites how audiences reacted when Jersey Shore pulled the clip last season of Snooki getting punched as reasons why ABUSERS – which will follow couples around in a day of their life, both separate and together, to see how their lifestyle affects both themselves and their friends and families before offering them both a chance at rehabilitation facilities – won’t be airing any physical violence.

“One of the biggest inspirations for me was Denise Brown, and her account of her sister’s tragic death,” says Albert, of O.J. Simpson‘s murdered wife Nicole Brown‘s sibling, who will be a producer on the show, “And during one of the earliest meetings she made it very clear that there was no way she was going to be part of anything that would be exploitative.”

ABUSERS has only begun pitching their program to different networks, but is currently looking at MTV, VH1, and Lifetime as possible future homes.

Tell us: Would you watch ABUSERS? Does the omission of physical violence change your view of the show?

Albert Harris Jr (if that is his name) is nothing more than a low life scam artist. He will devastate your life financially and emotionally if you let him in. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING HE SAYS!!!!! I don’t want what happened to my family to happen to anyone else. Please DO NOT do anything involving this person!!!!!

Don’t be fooled. Please conduct your own background check. Albert is guilty of domestic violence and has scammed people of money. Please be careful.

      Failed productions. Nothing but talk.

Does anti-domestic violence and highlighting convicted sex offenders really sound right?

Only 1 semester at Rider’s? Hmmm, sounds fishy to me.

This is sad. It sounds like he and this whole “production” is all talk and no action. Why were they trying to produce a show about a convicted sex offender? That does not go well with domestic violence. This is sickening! http://www.trentonian.com/articles/2010/07/16/news/doc4c40ca77bde55819310017.txt
I wouldn’t let these producers close to me with a ten foot pole!

Clearly these people who are writing negative comments do not know Tammi or Albert at all.. It’s sad how when you are trying to do something great for the world as a whole, negative people who realize they have nothing to live for write lies.. I definitely support the show! Keep up the good work!

    Hi Eddie…
Thank you for this post. Yes my attorney has sent him and Tami Outerbridge a cease and desist letter. I have heard many stories about Albert Harris and none of them are positive. Its real unfortunate people prey on others to give themselves some credibility. Thank you and Happy Holidays!!!!

it is sad to think albert harris, jr would take advantage of the very people he claims he wants to help!! it seems Mr. Harris has been misreprenting himself, the show and preying on peoples kindness! he appears to be THE Abuser!!

Wow…I’m sorry no one called to verify this from me before it was written. I am not involved in this show. I’m shocked that Albert would say I am going to be a Producer of the show. Sorry everyone.

I know this article is a few months old and odds are you won’t recieve this but,to keep it short,Albert is a master manipulator and heartless con artist. The fact of the matter is his inspiration for his show came from his own abuse of his ex wife. He only hit her once but that is nothing compared to the years of mental abuse she and their son had to endure. I am extremely close to his ex and he is the typical deadbeat father who fails to pay child support and attempts to mentally “break” his 9 year old son. I can’t say I am the least bit shocked he used your tragedy for personal gain, but my gut wrenches none the less.

I’ve been following the news of this show. I will be watching.

All the shows are showing us women on these dating reality shows as drunk abused women. I’m excited about this show! Definetely will be watching now.

  10. By Supporter

I love the fact that the show is being done. I don’t get what Candice is talking about. We watch a lot of shows that show violence against us women but it’s awesome to see something that helps!! I’m all in and can’t wait to watch!!

The fact that people came up with shows that exploit us women as sex objects on these dating shows is disgusting. I praise the creators for doing something that wasn’t trashy.

  11. By candice

the fact that anyone even came up with the idea for a reality show like this is disgusting. wow. why would ANYONE, EVER want to watch this? regardless of whether violence is shown or not?????

…But if it’s truly sincere consciousness raising and bringing this darkness into the light of day – I have all the support in the world for it. In the article the writer mentioned the controversy surrounding shows like Hoarders and Intervention. As long as everyone involved ares consenting adults and agree to let their stories to be shared, which I assume they do since it’s on TV, I don’t find the programs exploitative at all, but very educational and maybe even helpful for others suffering similar issues.

  13. By Jena

This appears to expose the raw and gritty underbelly of a reality in which many live – but refuse to discuss publicly. Depending on how graphic it is, I may watch an episode. I don’t know whether it’s the equivalent of electronic “rubbernecking,” or rather a “raising of awareness” about a subject that society refuses to acknowledge; but I’ll give it a chance. If it appears to be strictly the exploitation of human misery for capitalistic gain – I’m out!

  14. By PaulC2do

    I think it sounds AWESOME!

  15. By Christy

I feel much better about watching this now!!

I believe abusers are getting younger and younger. Shining light on this dark behavior can help people who don’t even realize that are being abused or be informative for those being abused. And maybe showing the abuser it is their lack of self-esteem at the root of this evil! Yes, I would watch your show.

  17. By Veronica4

This sounds amazing. I’m still amazed that a male created this show. Two thumbs up for Albert Harris Jr and Denise Brown!

  18. By Leslie

100% I will definetely be watching!
