After the summer of death that was 2009, it was heartwarming to see that the one moviemaker who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose to honor at this year’s Oscars was writer/director/producer John Hughes. Although he may not have contributed as much to the world of film as others, Hughes’ movies set the tone for the movies of the 80’s, launched the careers of many — Matthew Broderick, Molly Ringwald and Macaulay Culkin, to name a few — and created indelible images that bring a whole generation of people back to their childhood.
At the time of his untimely death last year, Hughes had most recently been working as a writer on films like Drillbit Taylor. Now, we’ll never know what else he could have produced later in life, but we have this touching tribute montage to remember all the things he did create during his short time in Hollywood. The best part: additional tributes from Matthew, Molly, Macaulay, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Jon Cryer and Ally Sheedy and Ferris Bueller reminding us that, “Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
