What has Hollywood done to all our USA superheroes? Batman is limey Christian Bale. Spiderman is the adorable British boy Andrew Garfield. And now the most famous of Americana icons, Superman, will be none other than Tudors actor Henry Cavill, according to the breaking news on Deadline Hollywood.
Well, at least it’s not Nicolas Cage. Or, God forbid, Ryan Reynolds or Chris Evans, who are the only two state-side actors apparently capable of sauntering around, saving the world. And Henry definitely has more of a “man of steel” look to him that Brandon Routh, the failed alien from Ka’el from 2006′s Superman Returns. But can Henry – whose other titles include Neil Gaiman‘s Stardust and the upcoming Tarsem Singh film, The Immortals – ever fill the spandex-clad tights of Christopher Reeve?
We’re also a little wary of this reboot: It’s produced by Christopher Nolan of the Dark Knight films (yay!) but directed by 300‘s Zack Snyder (ummm…). Said one Warner Brother’s executive about the decision, “He’s got an amazing quality. He doesn’t look too much like Reeve and Routh but he’s big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him. We’re really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible.”
A contemporary Superman could go either way: like the updated, grimier Batman, or, say, the “new” versions of the Hulk. Like, all of them.
