Alexis Bledel's "Post Grad" Picked One Of The "Biggest Stinkers of 2009"

Here’s a story that’s sure to incite some talk! The Calgary Herald released their list of the worst films of 2009 a few weeks ago, and Alexis Bledel’ (Rory on Gilmore Girls) film, Post Grad was picked as one of the worst! Michael D. Reid had this to say:
postgradmovieposteramazon

“Are you kidding me? That question often sprang to mind during this feeble comic misfire starring Alexis Bledel as a perky college grad who returns home to her eccentric family when her dreams of a publishing career don’t pan out. Watching the great comedienne Carol Burnett squander her talents as a wacky, wisecracking grandma on death’s doorstep, and Michael Keaton playing pop, a delusional luggage salesman, were among this snoozer’s particularly painful moments.

That’s not the only blogger who wasn’t a fan of Alexis’s movie. Matt Goldberg of Collider also placed Post Grad on its “Worst 5 Films of 2009,” who was “pissed off” by the ending. I won’t reveal it here, but suffice to say, he was not happy.

I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t comment but it doesn’t look like critics liked it too much when it was released. The film only has 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. For those who’ve seen it, what did you think? Will you be buying it on DVD when it’s released January 12?

I have not seen it yet, but I want to. I think the only reason despite the rumors of how bad it is. Is Alexis is in it.

  2. Linda

I wasn’t a fan of it at all. I think Alexis Bledel should get over making college movies. I wouldn’t recommend this movie at all, okay maybe to my 10 year old cousin. But this movie is the sort of movie that is boring from the start till the end, with no such thing as excitment. I think this movie should just be forgotten, so that Bledel can move on to more serious movies. I would give it a 2/5, only because I’m a fan of the cast.

Aww! I loved that movie! It was cute, funny, silly, imaginative, and totally fun! I just graduated from college, so I could related to A LOT of it. Those who put it down, are just not imaginative and don’t have a very fun sense of humor. I hope she doesn’t start making “serious” movies, those are boring and aren’t cute. :-)

On the subject, Have you guys seen Reed Fish? She was in it and it was really good. I liked it and Alexis had just a hint of Rory in it, but outside of that it was a fantastic performance.

I was looking forward to it, but hated it. It’s nice to see Alexis in post-Gilmore work, but this one just didn’t work. The end really is a huge disappointment. Ace is right – I’m Reed Fish was definitely a more interesting role in an more wholesome movie.

It’s worth a rent but not a purchase. It’s unfortunate, seeing as most of the money made on a a movie production these days is from DVD sales (this is unless you’re Twilight and you make almost as much from box office sales and merchandising).

she always says she wanted to get away from playing the”Rory” kind of character. the whole time i thought this is just rory the later years the girl loved books had a hard time getting a job was smart.it was just gilmore girls season 8. it had a horrible ending with an ending every other movie has used. complete waste of many and time plus that thing she had going with that guys was so creepy

Sorry, that movie sucked. It is a shame that Bledel’s name is on the marquee because it really wasn’t her fault. She did what she was asked to do and did it well. The story was just idiotically conceived. She is the only reason I give the movie a 2/4. If you don’t care for her it is a 1/4.

I thought I’m Reed Fish was decent (3/4) as were but honestly the only movie that she has been in that I thought was actually good (4/4) was Tuck Everlasting. I put the two STTP movies and Sin City in the same 3/4 bucket – I thought they were entertaining but not particularly good. Bride and Prejudice was also pretty bad – 2/4 (but her role was fairly insignificant).

Alexis acts natural & looks radiant in the movie.
Its the script & the director that sucked!
The director just wasted all the wonderful cast she had in it thinking that she’s still doing a “cartoon” movie w/ w/ cliche characters & subplots.
And I really hate too the ending – probably if she end up w/ David or even not to anyone it wont be that really bad… but the director chose a disney-type-ending jeeez!

  10. Christina

i love cliche characters, cliche subplots, and disney type endings.

my mom thought the movie cute was cute too.

@ The film only has 9% on Rotten Tomatoes…

Rotten Tomatoes don’t like Post Grad but they definitely like/love Alexis. She got/had a positive rate in RT (71%)http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/alexis_bledel/
    – they still see her that she got these credibility, talent & probably bankability as an actress/celebrity; much higher than the likes of Natalie P., Scarlett J., Anne H. or even Kristen Stewart (somewhat surreal but extremely nice).
Every actor/actress had some fair share of bad movie/s and Alexis seems to be not exempted from them. And w/ 3 upcoming & seemeinly promising movies at hand, RT would surely add up another notch on Alexis’ already high marks.

Huh? What are you talking about? Other than Stewart (who kind of hit the lottery with Twilight much like Bledel hit the lottery with GG), SJ, NP, and AH are all much more credible now than Bledel. Portman and Hathaway have Oscar nominations, for goodness sake. Johannson has four Golden Globe nominations. Bledel hasn’t established herself as a movie actress any more than her peers in Sin City. That doesn’t mean she won’t, but she hasn’t yet. I don’t know what The Letters is about, but Good Guy sounds like it’s headed straight to video and The Conspirator sounds like a typical period piece that could have moderate success, but not generate a ton of buzz.

BTW, the RT actress meter is a simple measure of how many of her movies were rated fresh (5/7 = 71%). It counts Rushmore (where if you blinked you missed her) equally to this one where she was the lead.

I haven’t seen it. I like Alexis, but it does look pretty bad. But that’s how it goes. Lots of great actors have been in some pretty horrible movies. It can take years to get really great parts in films, at the end of the day it doesn’t matter how good a cast is, you need a good script as a foundation.

  15. mcityrk

I’ll pick up the DVD once available and see if there was anything redeeming about it irrespective of the bad reviews. Hopefully there will be some good extras to mediate the pain as well as a few classic AB moments.

As to the RT ratings, since AB has had about 70% of her professional time occupied by GG and thus only had short time windows for movies [thus limiting the number of attempts particularly when her charaters were on the lead], it seems as if her resume is insufficiently filled out to tell whether she will catch up to age group peers like NP, SJ, and AH. Certainly her efforts in TE, SOTP I, and SC show significant promise. Guess we will find out over the next few years how good she will become but as a fan I like her chances.

  16. sterling

The fact that I stated the likes of NP, SJ, AH & KS is also merely implying that they really are more popular & successful actresses than Alexis Bledel. And I also mentioned “surreal” isnt it?! That even “I” do wondered why Alexis whose big hit only came from a mild hit TV show compared to like NP who came from a huge SW franchised yet the former emerged as more favorable in RT.
I always adore Alexis and her being somewhat raged by a recognized entertainment/movie site like RT (that even if she’s still not hitting her career peak), it’s somehow a “bliss” – no matter how other would want to see it the other way.
And as Alexis keeps on getting some legit work (even after what had happened tragically to PG), it’s a “hope springs eternal” thing as far would her acting career status goes.

  17. jeannaire

It’s really quite disappointing what had happened to Post Grad. But having a box-office movie these days is just merely a “stroke of luck”. Just looked at the Transformer & Twilight movies, from the script down to its cast, they’re all disasters but they still hit it big – damn those teeny-tweens (lol).
But Alexis is not a lost cause (& will never be – imho) she’s got a lot redeeming qualities/talent that yet to be discovered & unveil in due time (compared to the stroke-of-luck careers of Kristen S. & Megan F.) and I’m willing to take her chances too.

  18. drewlard

Alexis looks “”ethereally enchanting”" in PG’s posters & still pictures and now on the DVD cover, Dang… that girlet could never looked fug or even homely…

  19. jeannaire

    A something/somewhat positive about Post Grad…

  20. tennille

And say what if Alexis “still” couldn’t get into plum roles in big-budgeted or in box-office movie/s?!
Hey, work is work. She’s not in a position to pick and choose her (dream/ideal) roles, so cut the girl a break. Making it in Hollywood (most esp. in movies)is very difficult to do & I agree to one poster that it’s a stroke of luck for most of the time.
I rather see her & pleased that she’s getting absorbed at the director’s camera rather than the ones from the paparazzi & tabloids. So good for her that she’s keep on working as an actress and still considered to be employable & relevant.

Finally got around to picking up a copy and viewing. The movie as a whole is uneven and at times mediocre but that is because they wasted Carol Burnette, Michael Keaton, and Jane Lynch with mostly pedestrian plotlines and stilted dialogue. If you edit out the really stupid family sequences and keep in their sweet moments it’s a better movie than it gets credit for. The other problem for me was the minimal romantic chemistry between Alexis and Zack. They seemed more like brother and sister than two people who belonged together so of course the ending was less than satisfying.

For what it is worth, I thought the opening was good until the family showed up and slowed things way down, that Ryden in her final workplace was somewhat interesting if derivative of Rory, that Alexis and Michael worked well when the writing was good, and that I would like to see Alexis and Rodrigo work together again on a better written project. Their chemistry was mostly fun and believable, from pathos to contemplative resignation to silliness [particularly liked the very short soccer playing scene]. However, good acting can not fix behind the camera problems with story and direction so it’s time to say “Cut” and “Next”.
