I am shocked and surprised at the ticket sales news I am reading for “All My Sons” in which Katie Holmes will make her Broadway debut. Everything I have read says that the sales are disappointing and not going well at all.
One article says that the play is already destined to be a flop because the advance bookings are so poor. They have failed to reach the $1 million dollar mark.
Michael Ridel, one of NewYork’s most influential theatre critics is saying that this is roughly a third of the expected volume for a Hollywood Star’s Broadway run. He goes on to state (and yes, some of you will not like this statement – but please don’t shoot the messenger 
) that Tom Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman brought in about $4 million in her play The Blue Room.
Ticket vendors are already complaining that the general public is showing little interest in the show. One seller has said, “I bought 1,000 tickets to the show. I still have them.”
When the play “All My Sons” first hit the stage in 1947, it was a huge success. It received a Tony Award for Best Play.
Regardless of the the ticket sale issues, the play is set to preview on September 18th.
Any ideas as to why the ticket sales are so bad?

The constant comparisons to Nicole Kidman’s amazing sales are not really fair. At the time, movie stars live in the theater was almost completely unheard of – there were some serious actors who had already done theater, and then did movies, and then did theater again, but that wasn’t the same as a very hot hot movie star. The second thing, and it has such tremendous impact that it hardly needs mentioning, is that NICOLE KIDMAN WAS TOTALLY NAKED for several minutes. That jacks up the value of the tickets somewhat – not just first chance to see a movie star less than 8 feet away in real life, but definitely absolutely the first chance to see a NAKED beautiful movie star from that distance. Unsurprisingly, the ticket sales went crazy.
Since then, we’ve seen Julia Roberts etc in the theater. No one thinks of Katie as an A list movie star, even though I think she is a brilliant actress. She shouldn’t be expected to sell as well as Julia Roberts. She definitely shouldn’t be expected to sell as well as naked Nicole Kidman. Let’s give the kid a break, she’s trying to learn her craft – sincerely.

Infact the booking site says the exact opposite.
I think that Katie should not have chopped her hair so short it was not her time, now she looks less appealing and boring. A woman’s greatest power is beauty and confidence. Though some may disagree, I feel like Tom does a better job of acting unfazed and normal in the public eye that she does. If anything, she was a pretty girl back then and people would still be interested in her if she would act posh and try to look good like J.Lo and Victoria, who seem to care about looking good wherever they go. When I see how crappy she looks I think of Nicole Kidman back in the Cruise days, she looked like a decent wife and alteast looked good in the public eye. Katie needs to grow up, or else I say Tommy boy, ditch her, she is too weak to be with you and her spiritual development is not advancing because she keeps trying to run away from the negativity. I don’t know, if he is a good husband he should help her. I don’t mean to be mean, I like them both, but Katie is getting annoying.

I still don’t understand the comparison to Nicole. They are so different as day and night.
I don’t know if this is true. After all, Lauren did say in another thread that the tickets were going really fast!
I guess we will all find out in Oct. when the play opens.
I did hear that tom is a silent financial backer of “All My Sons”. That is SO sweet. Shows that he supports Katie and believes in her.
Puck, the official broadway site says the sales are even better than expected so does the ticket sale site. I don’t know where these people are getting their information from. Why did they have to write this article before the sales even started? I am very suspicious about their intentions.
Why this when the official site says something different, that they have indeed made way over 1 million already and exceeded expected sales. I smell sabotage.
I doubt Tom is backing this play. Katie can be hired on her own merit. She is a very good actress after all.

Baggie, there are few thing you say that i agree with, but we don’t know what’s wrong with katie,i think katie’s life has always been nice and smooth ,until these last couple of years,and continuously being bagged everyday,about every single thing, must have a negative effect and depressing effect on her, there are people who can hide their feelings, their pain, their frustration, whatever, i don’t think she can., and her hair, which is the most unflattering style on her is not helping. she has lost weight, and even this health condition that katies got , she’s had since chidhoodanyway so she knows how to control it. makeup, she’s always gone without it, when just out and about, but i do worry that she does’nt put as much thought or care in her clothes as she used to, because looking good is part of her job, ialso realise that katie wants to be taken seriously as an actress and not just a pretty clothes horse, as some sections of the media were beginningto view her in that way, she has to somehow find a halfway point to please everyone, her fans who adore her, and her need to be true to herself. like i said we don’t really know anthing about them, except for what we read ,what they say in interviews, or our own impressions about them. i could be wrong, but i think katie is depressed , and has lost confidence in herself or at least that’s the way she comes across to me, and if you feel like that , money, mansions, clothes, mean nothing.
katie has a lot of people in her life who love and care for her, there’s also a lot of people out there who can help her become strong, maybe find herself again, this katie has to go.
I don’t happen to think here’s anything at all wrong with this Katie.
Katie doesn’t have to find a halfway point to please anyone, she has to please herself and if that means not wearing makeup, not smiling and not looking as if she is constantly in Hollywood style icon demand mode, then so be it.
When she has to dress the Hollywood part, she does it well.
I’m glad she’s not one of those who feels that she always need be on display and in just the right clothes with perfect hair etc.
Katie is about to have one of her dreams come true, that is being on the Broadway stage, she has spoken about that since her DC days.
She’s allowed down time from the pressures of Hollywood and the “you must be perfect mentality”.
Good for her that she does.
Mary, i always like and respect what you have to say, but this timei don’t agree with you. it’s not the makeup and she doesn’t have to look like a hollywood icon either, and yes , her dream is coming true and that is wonderful for her and i think that most of us here are really happy for katie, but i’m sorry, nobody changes in such a drastic way, and not for the better either. ihate the way , now she;s being compared to nk or god forbid to mr or that she’s looking in her forties, and its going to go on , you know that, ialso remeber how gross tc looked in col von str haicut, its his hair and different clothes that are making him look ,as jenna says hot baby hot. i love katies naturalness mary, but shees in an industry where appearances count and she’s only 29, best time of her life, you can’t possibly say that the katie of only a couple of years ago is the same katie of today. i really like katie , i would in no way say mean things about her, or criticise her in any way ,if thats what you think i’m doing, but i hate seeing a naturally beautiful girl not making the most of herself.
Now the broadway regulars are saying that it is the scalpers that bought the bulk of the pre-sale tickets. And they will discount the cheap seats as the opening nears.
As for tom’s company being one of the financial backers, I think that it is sweet that he would do it. It shows that he knows katie will be successful.
katie looked sooooooo much better in 2003. she had more meat on her face, and her complexion looks way healthier. i hope she’s not ill.
Annie…..thanks for agreeing with me……the choice of clothing contributes alot to a woman’s image, I love that katie can feel comfortable going out in public with no makeup, I admire that quality in her, but she was the one who was so into clothing and her face and body were splashed all over the magazines as the latest style icon…I am surprised by her 4th of July fashion choice. I agree with you in that she is a beautiful woman and wish that she would play that up more. She looks so average and plain jane in those pics. Jackie O. was a style icon and even when she ‘dressed down” in capri’s and a tank at the beach in the hamptons she looked stylish and her casual outfits made”sense”. Katie’s grecian style broze colored toga sandals with a gray cropped sweater and a black thick jacket just do not make ’sense’ from a fashion standpoint. She admits she loves fashion and clothing but this outfit may indicate she does not have a natural ‘eye’ for it.
Jenna, i looked at those photos of katie and i swear, she puts those try hard hollywood girls to shame, thats what is upsetting.
The thing is that you are not considering pre Tom Katie who was out and about not airbrushed, she had her moments then, she has her moments now. She is under pressure now and that should be expected, there are times in the last three years that I have looked at her and thought she had never looked better. Don’t think of only the magazine pictures but go back and look at the candid ones. Remember too that she was not photgraphed as often then so we did not see all her highs and lows.
Annie and Jenna, I do understand your concern but I do also believe that this is temporary and because of the play, all the travelling and a little child. It will hopefully pass.
Puck, unless it i sofficial, lets not assume that Tom is backing the play, Katie like someone said is capable of getting this role on her own merit.
Also, there is nothing about discounts on the official ticket sales site, lets not assume that, soon enough people will be taking it for fact. My guess is that it is a back up to these lies (that tickets are not selling) in case the seats turn out full.
Mary, it’s not even about being on display. It’s a matter of grooming. She looks not like she doesn’t care what others think, but she looks like she doesn’t care about herself anymore. And, any mother with her head on straight would have taken a wipe and cleaned her child’s mouth off after eating chocolate. Something’s off.
Katie dresses up when she needs to. Telluride is supposed to be downtime for the family. No one should be expected to be “on” all the time.
When she is out and about in LA (Hollywood), she dresses the part.
She very rarely gets it wrong there.
Again,Telluride is where the family goes to get away and now the paps seem to have invaded that too, at least in town.
When Suri is seen with the ice cream on her face, they are headed back to the car from the parade, it’s in the video.
I read a comment recently from someone who lives in Telluride who said that the paps are constantly in their faces, more than thirty most times clicking away.
Tyler, is something off with Jeniffer Garner? She sometimes looks worse than Katie and recently- yesterday, Violet had ice cream all over her mouth.
This is all a case of over analysing things. If you dropped your magnifying glass, you would realised that Katie is like any other strained working mother. I hope she eases up a little. May be she will take time off before the actual play.
All My Sons is not in rehearsal as yet. I expect that will soon start and Katie and family will be in NYC for the run of the play until January 11th.
I seriously love this site! Its so funny how we all “analyze” Katie’s every move!! I love all the comments and tend to agree that Katie’s appearance recently leaves alot to be desired. Annie: I agree…..when she tries, she does put the other Hollywood moms to shame. Lauren: I too agree with you in that Jen Garner has also been looking very thin and sloppy with her constant running shoes and long baggy sweats. You said it correctly…they both appear to be strained. All the traveling has to take a toll on Katie. Tyler: yes…it appears that her grooming is now on the back burner. She made a comment at her Mad Money premeire that the reason her hair is so short is b/c she needs to spend less time in front of the mirror and more time concentrating on Suri. This is a great statement, but she does have nannies, and minders to watch Suri, which most moms do not have, so it would stand to reason that she could have a few moments to herself to slap on some concealer to remove the dark eye shadows. Maybe she could care less anymore how she looks in front of the camera.
Strained? She has housekeepers. She has nannies. She has stylists. She has agents making her appointments. She has private jets and private limousines. She has masseusses at her disposal. I know what it’s like to work and raise a two-year old and without most of what she has. It’s not THAT hard!! Having said all that, I don’t know the state of her health, but if she has the energy to walk around town with her family, surely she has enough energy to wipe her child’s mouth? I didn’t see the pics of Violet. Did Jen have a big diaper bag with her like the Cruises did? If Conner wasn’t lugging that thing around, it would have been a different picture. I feel bad for overanalyzing, but Lauren invites it.
Tyler, house keepers, nannies, agents, stylists, private jets and a gruelling theatre routine, I feel tired just listing them.
She has to think about them and work them, instruct them, worry whether they are doing things right and have to worry about her private life being over scrutnised. I would be stressed if my hair made headlines every time I changed it.
Come to think about it, a working mother raising her child and commenting on celebs’ lives must have it easier. I doubt she even has time to blog like you do. Feel lucky my dear.
Michelle Williams stressed over paps and the media and she was no where nearly as hounded as Katie.
And Tyler, please don’t blame me for your over analysing, it is after all what brings you here everyday. You also do it at other sites, I am the one who makes you do it there too? Excuses, excuses.
Lauren is correct in that as much help as Katie may have those people still look to her for direction.
With regard to nannies, Katie has never comt across as the type that would let others take on the task of raising her children.
She has said her own mother took her everywhere with her when she was a child.
Katie also said in her InStyle interview that she has a hell of a calendar.
With all of the intrusion into her and her husband’s every move, I think Katie has handled it all quite well for someone who had never experienced anything like it before her relationship with TC.

Don’t care about the ice cream. that happens with little kids-but the hair is a different story. It is making her look like an orphan with no one to care for her. Put a clippie or barrette in there.
Lauren, she has time to do whatever the hell she feels like doing. She acts because she WANTS to. She doesn’t have to do any of it. It’s all optional and voluntary so cut the crap, please.
Katie doesn’t have to tell anyone what to do. No one looks to her for any kind of direction. She is NOT the head of the house, tom’s mother is the head of the house. Mrs. Mom and the sisters are in charge of the running of house hold duties.
And lauren, I am not the one that is assuming. You are. All I said was that I had heard the toms company was a silent financial backer. All that means is that I heard something. I did NOT say it was true OR false. YOU are the one that took it as truth.
And even IF it is true, SO WHAT! You, yourself has said that tc has TONS of money and he can do with it whatever he wants. So IF he wants to back the play that kh is in, GOOD FOR HIM!
As as for discounted theater tickets, are you, Lauren, a regular on the broadway circuit?
If you are then you know that all seats that have not sold go on “sale” the closer it gets to opening night. That is nothing against kh. That is just the way that broadway works.

I could be very much mistaken but the last I read, TC/kH did live with Tom’s mother and one of his sisters and her children at their previous rented residence.
One of Tom’s sister doesn’t even live in LA, one has her own home. I don’t know if the sister who previously lived with them still does but I do believe his mother still does.
I recall Katie saying in an interview that she has a lot more responsibilities now……..Maybe it was Vanity Fair. I’ll have to check.

As for Broadway tickets going on “sale” for All My Sons it’s way too early. The play is not in full rehearsal as yet, it’s not even at the theatre it’s scheduled to open in, no sets are up and tickets won’t be sold at the theatre box office until the first or second week in August.
Way too earlier to start saying “sale” tickets and way too early to start saying flop.

I was posting about how the ticket sales on broadway works. I NEVER said ANYTHING bad about AMS. but YOU did.
Surely you must agree that this play will be a success, YES?
And as for the running of toms house, it is a well know fact that his mom and sisters work for him. They keep his home life and home affairs in order. With all the travel that he and kh have to do for their jobs, he needs someone that stays in LA to run his personal affairs.
I’m sure most here would agree that he made a good choice. I can’t think of anyone I would trust more then his own mother to make sure the house staff kept tc life private.
Tyler….just a quick clarification. I wrote that she appears to be strained, not that I am confirming that she actually is strained. Big difference. She appears to look unwell, and some of us are just wondering as to why.
So Tyler, do you think Tom’s mom travels with Tom and his family wherever they go to keep things in order and run his affairs? I have not heard anything about her moving with them to their new home. Infact prior to moving, Tom and Katie were living at the Celebrity scientology centre. I doubt his mum runs his home, from the interviews, it appears that Katie does. Even Jada said so.
Con mom, that you said about Suri, Katie’s mom said that about her. That she was a strong willed child that she (her mom feared that people wuld think she was an orphan). I am all for the barrette but I don’t fancy the chances that it will remain in the hair for more than 5 minutes. She did seem like she like the band in her hair the other day.
I can’t wait to see what they do with it. She has beautiful hair.

Jada also says she is not a cos member. But yet SHE home schools her children in the CoS beliefs. It must be the CoS way that you can be a Catholic AND be a CoS at the same time. And you can be a CoS and NOT be a CoS at the same time.
I have a very strong-willed daughter who is now almost 30–can’t tell her anything now. lol but when she was little there were things that I would tolerate and things I wouldn’t. Looking neat when out and about AND always being on good behavior was expected. At home?? Not so much-actually I was a pretty lenient mom. But it was always a surprise when people would say my girls were so ‘well-behaved’ and ‘polite’ because they sure weren’t always at home..LOLOL
And Suri does have beautiful hair like her mom.. I think she is going to be and already is a beauty..Just can’t stand hair in the face-any face..
Puck, are you in the Smith household to know that Jada teaches her kids scientology? If she says she is not a scientologist, she is not. It is her life after all and we should respect what she says. May be there are good aspects of scientology she likes to taken on without joining it. I am not buddhist, yet I believe in Karma.
Con mom, pardon me but I remember you and others complaining about Suri being dressed to the nines, her hair always groomed and not allowed to be a child with all the designer clothes. It seems to me that may be people just like looking for a fault.
Besides, you have said it on every thread that you don’t like Suri’s hair and she looks neglected. We get it. It is now a broken record. Move on to something else. Have you checked out Katie’s toes, they are too long….. lol.
Lauren, Have you ever heard the term “What goes around, comes around”?
It comes from “An eye for an eye”, which is in the Bible. ie., Karma.
So to compare that you are not a Buddhist, but yet you believe in Karma, is NOT the same as someone teaching their children about a belief that YOU say they do not believe in.
Jada and Will both have been VERY vocal about their children being home schooled in CoS.
Here in California, some are trying to get a law passed that you cannot be home schooled unless the kids are taught be a certified teacher. That is one reason that the Smiths are starting their own school. Which will be based in CoS teaching methods. Something that the Smiths believe in.
Never thought of that reason for the school. I know CA is having a problem with home-schooling and has been cracking down on it. I think it should be like it is here in FL where the kids still have to pass the state tests for each grade level and you have to present your lesson plans, etc.
I don’t think it’s any secret that the Smith’s home school their children. Both Jada and Will have admitted to that.
Reports suggest that they home school their children using study technology, which was developed by Hubbard and focuses on students gaining hands-on experience, mastering subject matter before moving to the next level, and being taught not to read past words they don’t understand.
Study technology has been explained this way by the head of the school that Jada and Will are opening…………. (Jacqueline Olivier, the head of the school is a highly respected educator.)
“People tend to think study technology is a subject, but it is really just the way the subject is taught,” Olivier said. “They then come to the conclusion that we are teaching Scientology when actually a methodology doesn’t have anything to do with content.”
