Amber Heard seems to be one of those actresses who is quietly but firmly out. This is the first I’ve heard of it, but Amber is open about her sexuality and regularly attends GLAAD events, most recently with girlfriend Tasya van Ree. But even though she’s not shouting from the rooftops about who she’s attracted to, Amber obviously believes that being out at all in Hollywood is a big step.
In the December issue of Women’s Health, the Rum Diary and former Playboy Club star issues an open challenge to her fellow actors and actresses playing it straight for the sake of their reputations:
You can’t respect yourself if you’re afraid to be who you are. It requires bravery to do something no one else around you is doing. But the risk was outweighed by the possibility of playing into this horribly detrimental lie that some in Hollywood perpetuate.
Obviously Amber has the right opinion, but I think she has it easier than other stars. Sure, she’s been in the biz for several years, but she’s not an A-lister who stands to lose a lot more if they were to come out. That said, the fact that she’s just now making it big could work to her advantage: Actors like Sean Maher who started out 10-15 years ago had to hide their sexual orientation from the start and felt they were always living a lie, but in our more open-minded times, Amber can come on the scene already out and just force people to deal.
