So, it’s the morning after the American Idol elimination show and we’ve all had time to think about this and I know a lot of people are doing the “shoulda, woulda, coulda” thinking. How do you feel about this season’s Top 3 (in alphabetical order) – David Archuleta, David Cook and Syesha Mercado? Anyone here that you think doesn’t belong? Was there someone who was eliminated who you believe should still be here?
For me, my biggest question is about Carly Smithson. I don’t know if I think she should have won, and I don’t know if I think she should have replaced any of the Top 3 but I do believe that she should have outlasted Brooke White and Jason Castro. That’s not an insult to Brooke or Jason who I feel touch more specific markets.
Syesha has a good voice and she is beautiful. Her skin is so amazing and I liked her both before and after the makeover (which “Syesha” do you prefer?).
Here’s the thing, in some registers her voice sounds incredible and she has a great range but then there are times when her voice actually annoys me. Again, I’m not saying this in a disrespectful way but I’m trying to be honest about each of their strengths and weaknesses. I also like that she is willing to take risks but I also think that there are times where she tries to push her voice into songs that are too big for her and it makes her voice sound stretched. No one can sing every song in the world and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with respecting the limits of your voice. A well-suited song that is performed properly will always be more impressive than a “huge” song that you are just able to perform…
David Cook was not my favorite when this competition began. In fact, I kind of hated him to be honest. I hated his look, I thought he was just coasting by and then he performed “Hello.” I was truly blown away and I started to pay more attention. I think he has had some bum weeks (this week’s “Hungry Like a Wolf” is an example) but I think that he has enough talent, stage presence and experience to do well in the industry after the show.
That, of course, brings up the important question – would he be better off losing? Look at what happened to Daughtry!
David Archuleta is super talented. No question. I think he has had fewer “bad” performances than any of the other contestants and he has a naturally good voice. Like Syesha, he’s got the “classic” Idol looks and he has good stage presence.
My only concern is his age. I think there are 17-year-olds that look like they came into the world ready for the business and while David is a seasoned entertainer, he also seems very young and very shy and, of course, there’s all that chatter about his alleged “stage dad.” Do you worry that David could crack under pressure? Could his dad ruin things for him?
At this point, I’m too afraid to make predictions because the Top 3 can get pretty crazy. I was not thrilled to see Melinda Doolittle (season 6) or Elliott Yamin (season 5) voted off but it happened.

Jeanne you make some good points about David A. Did you notice last night that he could not answer random on the spot questions? And he kept looking at his dad….interesting…He just seems like daddy’s little robot which is such a shame if all the rumors are true b/c he really seems like a great kid and he has awesome talent. I’m sure he will be fine and he will definitely get a great contract if he doesn’t win Ai, but the way the judges are pushing and semi promoting him, he will win and to be honest that is fine with me b/c David C and Syesha are totally awesome and should be stuck under an Ai contract singing what Ai wants them to sing.
I do think the top 3 are right as opposed to having Jason or Brooke in there. I do, however, feel that Brooke and Jason should have been long gone before Carly or Michael were booted off. Jason does not care about the show/competition anymore and his sorry attitude should get him booted from the tour and put someone more deserving in his place.
I wonder why the judges told David Cook that he didn’t change up his arrangements enough for certain songs but they never say that about David Archuletta who is to me, at most, a good cruise ship singer/cover artist. He hasn’t changed anything in his singing, yet never gets dinged for it. Anyone out there have any thoughts on that?
UMMM NO U DIDNT Rebecca! David has a natural voice, and if he does’t “change it up”, he still sound great. david cook doesn’t have a natural voice, so if he doesn’t “change it up”, he’s screwed. and now that America and the judges are used to him remixing every song, they expect that from him.
i think that the top 3 is not right. i think carly should replace syesha. but other than that, everything is pretty on target. i feel david a will win hands down, and i hope the rumors on his dad aren’t true…
I feel badly for Jason, but truthfully,I think he was ready. I love Syesha”s new look. Her outfits are AMAZING. The best I have seen EVER on AI.Her hair is great. I think she took some much needed advice on her hair and it works. David A. I have a problem with him. He is SOOO predictable. He does not change things except when he butchered ELVIS. Please leave it alone. I also think his dad will be his undoing. He is way too immature. David Cook has so much more stage presence.
Yes, Syesha has more limitations in her voice, than Carly, but she picked very difficult songs and sang them very WOW! just like david cook, she performed almost all the weeks in the right way.
i think carly should of made it to the top 3 and knocked out David Archuleta. he only got votes because girls think he is cute. Seriously, its a talent comp. not a popularty one. David Cook= Awesome, Syesh= Awesome, David Archuleta= O.K.{sucks to compared to those two} , Carly = Awesome. she should of stayed in the top 3 not David Archuleta
I agree with most of what each has said so far. DA doesn’t change the songs up much and that’s OK. My problem with him is that while he has a good voice, every song he sings is so similar. I do not see variety there. And he has that “I’m shocked and surprised you complimented me” look every time. The same look they used to criticize Melinda D for last year. I have liked David C the most this year but do not feel he had a good week. He has much more stage presence, to me, than DA. I think Syesha has good moments but is inconsistent. While I like her, I don’t think she is good enough to be in the finale and hope DC is there. The AI gods definitely want DA to win. That has been apparent from the start. At 17, he is nowhere near the talent or maturity level of Jordin Sparks. JMO.
I really was hoping to see Michael Johns in the finals – Michael, David, and David. Syesha has really stepped up the last few weeks, and I think she has outsung the other girls (and Jason) recently. So I think top three is okay for her. Yes, maybe there should have been someone else in the mix for final three. But it’s not too far off. And Michael and Carly and the others who left too soon will do very well for themselves after Idol – LOTS of talent there! I’ve really enjoyed most of David Cook’s performances (as I did Michael John’s). He’s switched things up and made them interesting. For several weeks I’ve thought that David A. is boring, boring, boring! Great voice – but not terribly original. And he hasn’t got the poise to answer a question or carry on a conversation on camera. I would think it would be better for the American Idol to be more comfortable in their skin than he appears to be. When he has some time to mature he’ll be awesome — just not quite ready yet…
my ideal top three are david cook-carly-michael…
i’m never a fan of syesha.. and probably will never be…
it should have been david archuleta, david cook, and michael johns or carly.
how brooke, jason, and syesha stayed so long, i’ll never understand.
i’m the biggest syesha-hater ever.
1. she needs to wear a freaking bra. her boobs are not perky enough to support themselves.
2. she needs to stop screaming. just because it’s loud, doesn’t mean it’s good.
3. her vibrato isn’t even a vibrato. all she does is move her head up and down, which isn’t the right way to do it.
4. she’s always sharp when she holds the note longer than two beats. it’s terribly out of tune EVERY WEEK.
5. she just sucks.
I’m pretty happy with the top 3. Although, I’m not sure if Syesha should be there over Carly. But just as long a my two Davids are there, I’m pretty happy.
Time will tell, but we all agree that syNOsha will be going home this week. She has outlasted her welcome. Time to say bye bye.
LOL, that’s really a no brainer that she will not beat the David(s)
