Brooke White is singing “Jolene” and Dolly said that there is an honesty about her that she really likes. I think it’s a good song choice for Brooke. She made it seem a little more contemporary (made me think of KT Tunstall, actually). Randy said that the music suits her voice but it wasn’t stellar, Paula said she is consistent and has an emotional connection with each song she picks and Simon said that the performance was lacking emotion and that it wasn’t one of her best performances.

I’m one of her biggest fans and she blew this one. This song is to be sung deep and mournful and pleading. If she needed to get in to character she should have pulled a donna summer and went in a dark room first and then come out to sing it. Giving her the benefit of the doubt, maybe being first affected her. Slower would have been better too. Simon’s comments about the fiddle player were off the wall – he didn’t seem to be himself that night either -or maybe that is real self, I don’t know! I’d buy this song in a heartbeat from Brooke if she did it right.
Here is my two bits worth. I like Brooke White. I think she should look into the music of Beth Nielson Chapman and similar song writers. I believe that is a good style for her.
