American Idol 8 Anoop Desai “Beat It”

My daughter and I had a beat going about what Anoop Desai would sing and we literally screamed out loud with laughter when we heard him start singing “Beat It” because that’s what we were afraid he was going to sing.  Anoop Desai

I love Anoop beyond words and I think this competition needs him but this song showed his vocal flaws.  Paula actually told him that it was a bad song choice and Simon said it was horrible and that it “actually looked a bit stupid.”

Sonia, I totally agree with you about how Idol is taking advantage of Anoop’s popularity. I found it increasingly strange that each week he’s left as one of the last contestants vying for a spot, only to make it through by the skin of his teeth. I’ve liked Anoop as a favorite to make top 12 since I saw his audition, but I think it’s terrible of Idol to exploit that that’s how a lot of people felt. I understand that a show like this needs to grab and hold an audience, but that the fact that they are using a fan loved contestant makes me uneasy.

Here’s the thing about “song choice”. The first 9 finalists got to choose from the Michael Jackson song pool…they had first dibs. The three wildcards got the leftovers. Each wildcard chose three potential songs and the producers are known to “encourage” Idol contestants to sing certain songs.
If you don’t believe me, you may recall after Jorge got slammed for singing “Never Can Say Goodbye” he looked befuddled and said something like “I had no choice. They told me to sing that.”
You can see the befuddled look on so many contestants faces when they get the “poor song choice” criticism because these are the songs they are pushed towards singing. Anoop had that same befuddled look when they ragged on him for choosing “Beat It”. I couldn’t understand why Paula would slam him so harshly when during part of Anoop’s performance she was standing up and dancing.

Jasmine Murray had the same look when they slammed her song choice.
In the end I think the producers know who they want to push on and who they want to drop off and steer the competition along those lines.

I honestly think they are using Anoop to stir up drama this season. They know he has a HUGE fanbase and are using him to their full advantage by jerking him around from week to week.
I love Anoop and hope he makes it to top five at least. If he gets axed then I’m throwing my votes to Allison.

    Go ‘NOOP! =)

He has a good voice but this was a bad song choice. He kind of looked like he was clowning around and imitating Michael. I don’t know.

It was a horrid performance. He destroyed a classic like it was a karaoke contest. I pray to God that he loses.

I thought it wasn’t that bad. really. I actually loved it. I really like his voice.
