To newyoung- It matters because not everyone shares your opinion. Reverse the situation, what would you feel if Buddhists were speaking for the whole world, and said their God is the one true God on American Idol? WHat if they told YOU that you were going to Hell if you don’t accept Buddha as your savior? You’d be saying the same things I am right now.
a lot of the posts on here remind me all too well why I spent 4 years in Seminary then decided to leave the “religion” behind. It is truly telling about where the “church” is when some on this board are more fixated on the fact that a minor alteration was made to a song involved in a 2 1/2 hour show dedicated to trying to help the very people that are Biblically the responisbility of the church. Instead of getting all bent out of shape, why not ask how you can help and get involved to try and make the world a better place. 10,000 seat churches and sermons on how to get rich with God’s help might be in fashion, but the face of what the church is supposed to do came into your living room through your television last night…instead of figuring out what was wrong the show, why not figure out how to make right the situations it exposed us to. To those of you on this board who already understand this concept, thank you so much for your efforts, it’s the little guy working in the streets that truly reflect Christianity, not the $2000 suits and slick sales pitches….
“WHAT DOES IT MATTER? THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT IN EVERY WAY, WHETHER FROM FALSE MOTIVES OR TRUE, CHRIST IS PREACHED. AND BECAUSE OF THIS I REJOICE.” Phil. 1:18
I Love American Idol – Last week Dolly Parton lifted up the name of Jesus – This week “Shout to the Lord” was great ! And tonight they mentioned the name ABOVE ALL NAMES – JESUS !
Wake up people ! Instead of fighting one another or calling Idol a secular show – take a stand for Jesus, stop fighting over doctrine.
The bible says the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord- there’s only one way to heaven – CONFESS JESUS AS YOUR LORD AND SAVIOUR – If you believe, you will be in heaven – if you don’t, your not a friend of mine and you will be in hell upon your death – and by the way, few will find heaven The Narrow Gate
13 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell[f] is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.
Thank you American Idol for having that song as the opener for tonight’s (Thursday’s) show! AND THANK YOU AMERICAN IDOL FOR SINGING THE NAME OF JESUS as the song was meant and written! WE WILL KEEP WATCHING! At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow! And every tongue will confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!
Why are (SOME) Christians the only ones to pronounce their God to be “the one true GOd?” Where does acceptance fit in? Nowhere? American Idol has just essentially said that every top performer, every audience member, and every viewer is Christian. Yes, they left out the name “Jesus” last night, but what other religion refers to their God as “shepard?” None! It is a CHRISTIAN song, no matter how you heard it. Open your ears. If you’re not going to come out of your box, at least stick one finger out to check the weather. Christianity may be the dominant religion in the US, but it is not by ANY means the ONLY religion. Are they going to perform a Buddhist chant next? Hindu? Jewish? Wiccan? I can’t even fit them all on one page, so American Idol WON’T have the time to sing one for every religion. And it’s funny to think, the Christian performers would object to singing about another God. But notie NONE of the non-Christian top performers refused to sing. Christians are so closed! It is not right to represent America as Christian alone. America is the land of the FREE. Included in that is the freedom of choose religion. Sure, if one contestant sings about Christ, and several have, that’s one contstant. Christians are as FREE to choose as anyone else SHOULD be, but AREN’T. Don’t imprison, bury, mask, sheild other religions by dominating with one. The Christian God may be YOUR “one true God,” but is NOT the “one true God” to everyone else. By the way, to all of you who are pronouncing me a Satanist at this very moment, surprise, I am a CHRISTIAN. But I do have an open mind, and I know that not everyone IS Christian. Everyone should have the same rights, and we cannot mask or cover up someone else’s religion in order to promote our own on TV.
There are a number of things that are not allowed to be said on TV actually, and “Jesus” is one of them — that is, in a situation where it’s not being used in vain. That’s why they had to omit it on TV but could do it correctly on iTunes.
They sang Jesus the first time, but for some reason there is an edited version floating around…I just downloaded both the video and audio only versions from iTunes and the audio only version says Jesus while the video version starts with “My Shepherd”
Either way, you gotta love it because the song doesn’t work with any other name in the Universe! Listen to the words…who else could it be?
Well, tonight’s version of “Shout to the Lord” should have dispelled people’s questions about whether or not they were singing it to Jesus. They mentioned Jesus in the opening part. :) woo-hoo!
Am I imaging things, or did the beginning of the song start out with Brooks, Archeleta, and Cook singing the name of Jesus, and then the rest jumped in with the rest of the song?
Well… no matter what anyone says… Christ was glorified and has been glorified since the begining of the season. It’s amazing how the Lord God puts Himself where ever He wants to be… especially in the center of a show that is viewed by 33 million people! They sang the name Jesus tonight!
Hmmm…. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that song and celebrate whatever amount of Christian influences they may be in the entertainment scene. But was it just me or does anyone else think that they sang that song to get evangelical Christians participating in the charity drive?
I think the most Christian thing to do, is to participate in these causes, whether or not they close the show with a watered down version of a worship song. Feeding the poor, healing the sake, educating the young – these are in and of themselves worthy causes to Jesus. The closing song should not matter.
I agree with several of you whom believe that at least a secural show woud sing a Christian song. Even though they changed the word -My Jesus- to My Sheperd. Every one knows that The LORD= Sheperd, and I do believe God can work through his Power to touch lives through that song! GOd is always on the move if you just LOOK FOR HIM!!!!!!
wow, its amazing how we as children of God followers of Christ fight about things. i couldn’t even read all of the comments. the most important thing is that someones life might changed and that they (American idol) were giving our Shepard, Jesus Christ the credit for the love of a giving heart.
What’s funny, no REALLY sad, is that even let’s say the idols sang the song “correctly” (according to some of the high, mighty, holy, and correct Christians who have posted here), they still would not be satisfied and then be real offended that non-christians are saying praises to the true one God Jesus Christ.
I am a believer too, and I was pleasantly surprised that they sang that song. As far as I am concerned, they stick to the true meaning and spirit of the song, which is a statement of submission, acknowledgement, and praise to the one true God. I’d take such statement being broadcasted on TV and watched by millions of people any day without one single complaint.

They sang it again tonight and said “Jesus.” Y’all happy now?
Why does God need a song to touch lives?
Would less people have be touched by God if that song had not been sung?
What do we need to do to make God touch the lives OF THE PEOPLE DYING OF MALARIA, reunite the Beatles???

just thank the Lord that He wasn’t left out.
Paul said, “I am not ashamed of the name of Jesus Christ”.
