Blake Lewis had some interesting things to say in this interview with MTV Buzzworthy the other day. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! For what it’s worth, I really did not like "This is My Now" and I thought it was unfair but I digress…
Here’s the interview:
Buzzworthy: Are you psyched that your album basically tied American Idol winner Jordin Sparks on the Billboard album chart, coming in at #10?
Blake Lewis: Oh, s—. I had no idea. I don’t really check the numbers or anything.
BW: Really, you didn’t know that?
BL: I know what it did the first week. But I don’t really care; it’s just a week. Talk to me in a year. [Laughs.]
More after the jump!
BW: So, if chart positions don’t matter to you, what do you think success is?
BL: Fans showin’ up to gigs. I just love playing live. Now that the record’s out, I’m just stoked that I can play my own music and not do cover songs.
BW: The race between you and Jordin seemed really close on American Idol…
BL: I didn’t pay attention. [Laughs.] I didn’t care one bit.
BW: When you first heard “This Is My Now,” the ballad you had to perform during the finale, did you think you were toast?
BL: Oh, totally. Me and Jordin went in a room with some guy who was producing that song and I was like, what the f— is this? This is a piece of s—. And you’re not going to let me arrange it? OK, cool. Thanks guys. I didn’t want to win American Idol anyway; I wanted to get second. Then we found out we had to learn it in, like, three days or something ridiculous. It was dumb. [Laughs.] It was just like, are you kidding me? It was really a piece of crap song. And the guys who wrote it were like, we’re sorry, dude.
BW: It seemed totally unfair…
BL: When I found out they wouldn’t let me change it, I was like, you’re kidding me. I mean, my range is alright but … I don’t do power ballads. And if I do, I write them and tailor them to my voice. But this one, I was just like, ummm… So I totally just, like, brushed it off and picked a key that I shouldn’t have picked. But it didn’t matter. Honestly, I picked Jordin to win during Hollywood Week.
BW: Let’s talk about your debut album, Audio Day Dream. Did you have as much creative control as you had hoped?
BL: Getting signed by Clive [Davis] was what I’ve always wanted. It’s, like, huge, you know? So I just came in prepared. I had a music video and artwork done. I had song titles. I made a mix tape. I knew the producers I wanted to work with. I said this is what my album’s gonna sound like and they kinda had their jaws on the floor and were like, [claps once] OK, let’s do it. And that was that. It was perfect. I was true to myself on the show and I got to be true to myself on this record. I had full … well, not full creative control. No artist has full creative control on a record. Not even U2. But pretty much, as much as I could get I got. Like 85%. I wrote every song but one on there. And the one I didn’t write I wanted on there.
BW: Why did you pick “Break Anotha” as the first single?
BL: That was the one song that Clive brought to me. I heard it and was like, that’s not me. But then I thought, man, this could be rad and huge, and Clive was stoked on it. It just came together and it felt good ’cause it doesn’t sound like anything on the radio.
BW: Do you have any fun holiday plans?
BL: For Christmas, mom, pops and I are going to Utah, where all my family is. I can’t wait to go home. I don’t get home too much. And New Year’s I’ll be here in Times Square.
BW: Have you ever partied in Times Square during New Year’s before?
BL: I don’t dig New Year’s. It’s just another day. It’s just another excuse for people to get drunk and have fun.
BW: But, really, isn’t that enough?
BL: For some reason New Year’s just hasn’t been productive for me or it wasn’t that entertaining. But I’m excited for New Year’s in New York. All my friends are comin’ out. It’s gonna be great.

I think Blake was being a little disingenous as to not knowing what the numbers were. Posssible a lot disappointed in those numbers.
In my opinion, he comes off a bit cocky and uncaring in this interview. Im not saying that he sould go over the charts for every detail, but it just seemed like he was like whatever about his whole career. I still love him though.
As a watcher of idol and a voter, I don’t like it when someone says they never wanted to win, why bother voting for them then. Coming in second seemsto be better than coming in first – that really only worked once, everyone else struggled after coming in second to one degree or another and the successful runner up only happened when the phonelines were jammed.
The second annoying thing is he seems like he is tryingto establish taht HE came in and shook things up – Uh, no, you are just another signed idol and you didn’t even win.
Blase about new Years…. Doesn’t bother checking chartgs…. yeah you are so cool aren’t you.
I don’t intend to be mean, but his interview just irritate me. It would be nothing personal, but each one seems more annoying than the one before.
Actually, Blake is very cocky, I could RIGHT away when we met him at the Idol tour concert, it was like he came out, he seemed excited to sign autographs but yet again he kinda acted like he didn’t wanna be there.. so you could really tell then he didn’t give a shit, he just wanted his name out….
I agree with you Jean. And you too Garry. He is starting to sound pretty fake lately. This interview seriously irks me. What did I see in this guy? Not to sound crude but it’s like he doesn’t care about what he does as a career. Plus he seemed kind of rude with all the profanity…
I love Blake, but that was RUDE. BLAKE HOW COULD YOU!
“a crappy song? ” come on that song was awesome and you did great at it!
Honestly, this interview annoys me. I was a huge fan and supporter of Blake, and Jordin as well. I love his creativeness and he is great at what he does. However, all the profanity and cockiness is getting on my nerves. I was a bigger Blake fan, but lately Jordin has been playing more in my CD player. Not because Blake’s music is not as good, but because every time I see him on an interview I don’t know what he’ll say. Jordin seems to have very strong morals, Blake not so much.
I know ! exactly! Blake seems like he don’t have pride anymore! what happened to the Blake on Idol? I liked him a lot more.
Who cares – Idol’s over, and he doesn’t want any more affiliation with it. Can you blame him though? Does anyone take American Idol seriously any more? Blake HAD to go on Idol to be successful. Don’t you work at jobs and do things you don’t want to do to GET where you want to be?
I just want to say this – if Blake became famous through himself and not Idol, he WOULD NOTTTT have the same fans as he does.
The whole “This is My Now” thing – How can a person NOT be bitter, when they know how creative he is, and be like “HAH NOPE, can’t change itttt.”
PLUS, Blake was the one who said “I am not a role model” and that “I don’t want kids looking up to me.” So he being rude just may be who he is? Iono, I think it’s funny actually. . .
Nick? from b-l.org? is that u?
The one and only.
lol
Oh My… He said that?!
yeah
I don’t believe he said those things, I thought he is a nice and cute guy… his totally disappointing me.. what a vain person!
That’s what i thought, it surprised me! but i still like him.! lol
You know what I love about Blake…everything! He was the only consistent contestant on AI and he still hasn’t changed for Hollywood. He’s stayed true to himself, which is important but rare for anyone in the lights. His new album is one of the greatest I’ve ever heard and I will continue to support his artistic abilities.
