An Ugly Betty Musical?

Becki Newton and Michael UrieMichael Urie told a British radio station (Heart), that there might be plans to adapt Ugly Betty to the Broadway stage:

“They do want to do an “Ugly Betty” musical, a full-on Broadway-style musical, but it’s all hush-hush. I think it would be great, and they should use the cast from the show. I think we would all do it, although we maybe don’t dance and sing as well as professional singers and dancers. I think it would be fun for us to do it for a while, and then they could get real people in. They definitely want to do an episode that is a musical one, but then they want to do a full stage show. I think it’s a great idea. It would definitely work.”

I saw this in the original post at DeanPiper.com, and I thought, “What the? Where did this come from?” Before I could run this through my “maybe this is a misunderstanding” filter, the story got picked up by the LA Times.

Of course, I think a stage adaptation of the show would be wonderful, and most of the cast members are pretty good singers and dancers (hello? Vanessa Williams?). Becki Newton makes a great campy singer, and we learned from Hot in Hollywood last year that Urie and America Ferrera can carry a tune.

I love how Urie uses the term “real people” to describe what would be the permanent cast of a stage musical version of the show.

Hey, if this really is in the works, I’m all for it!

I hope the musical episode will be done anyway, ’cause if there’s a real musical in Brodway, I won’t think twice before getting the first plane and coming to USA to see it – no, an Ocean in the middle is not a convincent stop -

Ew, so NOT a fan of that idea. I don’t know what is up with this need to turn every movie and tv show into a Broadway musical these days. I mean, I love Ugly Betty… but on Broadway? Really?

Not to mention there’s the little problem that we don’t know where they’re going with the show, so what would be the climax and end of the musical? They couldn’t just do it like an episode; that wouldn’t be satisfying enough on Broadway. They’d need a big finish and I don’t see how they could do that before the series is over.

    In conclusion:
    *Musical Episode: HECK YES!
    *Broadway Musical: NOOOO!
