In the episode ‘Knit, People, Knit‘, we start off with Chris and Lorelai over for dinner with Richard, Emily & Rory. The whole big Gilmore gang. Richard & Lorelai have a gift for the newly-wedded couple… and it’s a painting. The painting, by real artist Kiki Smith, is called “Wolf Girl”. The original painting was done by Kiki in 1999 for her series “Blue Prints.”

What research I’ve done indicates that Kiki was known for her “reflection on human existence” and on “women’s anonymous creativity throughout history.” In addition, she covers “rites of passage” in her art – perhaps rites like marriage. I’m not an art critic, so I don’t know what “Wolf Girl” is supposed to say about Lorelai & Christopher. Do you have ideas?
But I will ask – if Emily & Richard were going to give Luke & Lorelai a house… what does the painting say in comparison?

Im thinking pretty much along the same lines as Michael here. To be fair to emily she does have pretty decent taste – I think this horrendous picture was her way of saying we suffered by not going to our daughters wedding so now you can suffer by having to look at this piece of ugly! Funny we also get to see the cycle of relationships repeated – look at all the stuff trix bought for emily and richard that they hated and hid in the basement.
I think that it’s supposed to mean “Lorelai, since you could not get properly married infront of your parents, here’s a gift that we carefully picked outfor you both so show how much we disapprove of the manner in which you were married. Hehehe.”
My question is: is it the gift Emily was planning to give Lorelai for her wedding with Max?
After all, in the episode A Road Trip to Harvard, when Lorelai tells Emily about the wedding with Max being off, her mother tells her that she’ll get the gift she bought for her next wedding. Was it the gift?
I want to believe that, for once, Emily and Richard, gave more value to Luke and Lorelai’s wedding than to the one with Christopher.
After all, Emily was one of the first to notice the chemistry between Luke and Lorelai…
That crazy painting. It cracked me up when Richard and Emily gave that to Lorelai. It’s so ugly. LOL.
I loved it most when the painting showed up in GiGi’s doll stroller. It was funny how it kept moving around.
At the real estate office, Emily said that she knew that Lorelai wouldn’t let her and Richard give them a wedding so they wanted to buy them the house. They were giving Lorelai and Christopher a “wedding” so they just got the painting as a gift. I also think that deep down, Emily knew that the marriage wouldn’t last even if she did like Christopher and his position in life over Luke and his lower position in life.
I love how through out the rest of the seasons you periodically see Wolf Girl on the floor in a basket or hanging on the wall. So they kept the gift in the show as a prop and gave it more value than Rory’s gifts to her grandparents when she went to Europe which you never see again after the episode in which she gives the gifts to them.
