Angelina Jolie Inquirer Interview

There’s a great interview with Angelina Jolie in the Philippine Daily Inquirer (not to be confused with the very trashy National Enquirer which is only good for lining bird cages) that was originally published last year but has resurfaced everywhere due to the release of the trailer for Wanted. It’s very cute.

Some excerpts:

LOS ANGELES, California—“Isn’t that always the rumor?,” quips Angelina on reports that she’s pregnant. “I am not at the moment,” the actress declared. “But, I’m beginning to find it funny how often that’s written about in the press.”

Beautiful as usual in a black blouse and gray slacks, the much-admired humanitarian added, “You should have seen me at 6 o’clock this morning, with everybody in bed and me wondering how I was going to get up to get here!”

More snippets below the cut.

Some thoughts on Beowulf:

What is involved in performance-capture technology?

You spend a few days getting mapped so the computers will know your face. You do 60 different expressions. They also map your body. Then, when you shoot, you get to be in a jumpsuit. There are balls on your head. You look goofy and so does everybody so, it makes us feel very close. It’s not sexy at all (laughter)!
It was a lot of fun! I haven’t seen the full film, but when I saw my scenes, I was very surprised. I called home to say that I wasn’t sure my 6-year-old can see the movie, because it was more than I expected!

It was quite realistic. I thought it might be fun for the eldest of my sons to see—but it’s not! It’s too mature—it’s for older audiences because it’s more violent and sexual.

“Beowulf” was written centuries ago. Yet, it’s still valuable today. What do you make of the story?

The poem has a lot of layers. I always saw it as a tale about people who would sacrifice or sell their souls to the devil to get fame or power—and what a horrible trap that is!

I was raised to believe in hard work. At the end of the day, you sleep well because of what you’ve accomplished. So, the idea of getting something for nothing has never appealed to me.

On her roles in life:

In what order of importance do you rank your roles as mom, humanitarian and actress?

I’m a mom first. I don’t know if I’m as much an ambassador as I’m a citizen of the world. I just want to learn about the world and its cultures. Lastly, I’m an actress.

On the dangers of her humanitarian work:

You’re also a brave woman who goes to some dangerous places. Have you had close calls?

Yes, I’ve had close calls. I’ve been in countries where people tried to take my passport—where I’ve had to hide in a room, because there were people outside who were dangerous.

On how Wanted helped with the grieving process:

“Wanted” is a fun, action movie. When my mom passed away, I wanted to do something physical to get me out of my head. I wanted to do that because I was in a place where I wasn’t capable of getting up in the morning. So I needed something that would force me to be active!

On Brad Pitt:

In Toronto, Brad told us that you are his love, his partner and the mother of his children. How would you describe him?

Can I steal his (laughing)? I’d say he’s my love, my dearest friend and—the father of my children.

On dealing with paparazzi and the kids:

Have you adjusted to the constant presence of the paparazzi in your life?

Certainly, with the children, it’s a difficult thing. It limits what we can do. We try to make their lives full whenever possible. We look for places with freedom.

When it comes to the cameras, we make sure the children aren’t scared of them, so we say, “They’re just silly people who take pictures—aren’t they crazy?” How could you possibly explain something that there’s no good explanation for?

One last comment:

If you were reborn, would you like to be Angelina Jolie with Brad Pitt again, or a powerful, sexy woman?

Can’t I be both (laughing)? Honestly, I’d like to be a pilot and a painter.

While I enjoyed the interview, honestly I thought that last question was both stupid and offensive. Can’t she be Angelina with Brad AND a powerful, sexy woman? Because she is Angelina, she is with Brad, and as far as I can see she’s certainly a powerful woman, and she’s most definitely one sexy woman too. It’s like they’re implying that you can only be powerful and sexy if you aren’t also in a relationship. I don’t know, maybe they meant it in a totally different way, but it just sounds strange to me.

I apologize to all the Brad Pitt fans who prefer to read news and see pictures about him, but thus far, Angelina is the one in the forefront of the media due to her movie release, her new movie trailer, and her current filming. Soon it will taper off and we’ll be back to Brad; I promise to update immediately when it does!

Seems like lots of Pinays here – mabuhay! I remember Susan Roces & Amalia Fuentes. Did Susan marry an actor & have a huge wedding with doves flying out of wedding bells? I remember Vilma & Nora Aunor, too.

They are in London for the Beowulf premiere and I could hardly wait for the RC pictures. The tabs found the “bodyguard trash” headline and a “Wanted kissing scene” of course all fabricated, trashing Angie again. Just saw them in passing while shopping. Ignore, ignore, ignore. Hi Ligaya and Irma, can’t remember who mentioned Susan Roces and Amalia Fuentes. I was a Susan Roces fanatic and Eddie Guttierez during their popularity.

Great idea, Mary Ann! :-) There’s hope for me now too, in case my husband ever tires of cooking the turkey (he likes to make the stuffing).

It will be interesting to see where they end up for Thanksgiving. As usual Star had one of their negative stories, saying they were going to Brad’s parents house and that Angelina would spend the whole weekend fighting with Brad’s mother. She said in one of her interviews this week that she and kids were going to attempt a turkey dinner on their own. Someone should tell her that there is a new turkey that comes frozen in a bag and you pop it in the oven bag and all. Can’t go wrong that way. Wherever, I hope they have a great holiday.

We can vote for A Mighty Heart, and Brad & George for People’s Choice Award everyday at pcavote.com. (under moderation: my more detailed post).

  11. By ligaya

Remember to vote for the People’s Choice Awards at pcavote.com. You can vote everhyday and on everything or just one category (e.g. movies). A Mighty Heart is up for fave Indie Movie, Brad & George are up for fave match-up. I think it’s terrible that neither Angelina/Brad were nominated for Best Action Star. (Or were they in last year?)

The Arizona Republic, a legit paper (so unless they’re misquoting, this is believable), quoted Angie saying the family would spend Xmas in New Orleans, and that both Brad & she had work to do there (I assume Katrina).

I’ve seen pics of New Orleans in Christmastime and it looks beautiful, specially the Frfench Quarter where they live. There are bonfires on the Mississippi River as part of the festivities.

Hollyscoop.com has another Beowulf premiere video. According to the excited reporter, Angelina & Brad’s car got stuck in the traffic, then we see them getting out of the car to go over to the fans. Mini-interviews with Sir Anthony Hopkins & Ray Winstone (who looks nothing like his animated character), glimpses of John Malkovich, Warren Beatty, Nicolette Sheridan.

Wow–how obtuse for Federer to think he’s deserving of a biographical movie. Billie Jean King, definitely deserving. The Willams sisters, also deserving. What’s Federer had to overcome to be successful? Not race or sexuality. He’s been linked to Paris Hilton, for God’s sake.

What a smart woman Angelina is! I love to read her interviews, she always strikes me with what she has to say. Brad found his match and probably for the first time in his live – he needs to learn to live in a shadow of a stronger partner. :)

PS I am so glad you ended up with this website, you do a great job and I enjoy coming here each day to see what is happening. Sherry you do a wonderful job.

Sherry I asked the question and your answer is the same as my feelings. When Brad was married to Jen I would look at their pictures and think cute couple, and when they broke up I felt bad that another star marriage had not made it. But I was excited about his relationship with Angelina and waited to see where it went. Together, I believe them to be a power couple. And love seeing their children. This is a couple who can make a big difference in this world.

Hey everyone..i’m an avid fan of Angelina and Brad there’s just something so good about them! I visit this site on a daily basis i guess i just don’t comment much and just smile gleefully at the pictures or news but i must admit i am definately disappointed she’s not pregnant! But i reckon there’s plenty of time for that right? i hope they’re together for a long long time..keep up the good work Sherry! with love from England, Rach

Thanks for this site. As Brad and Angelina are such a great couple, when you get updates on one, there are always built in updates of the other.

I think we may be a bit confused about this article. It was a part of a large press conference last Saturday (Nov. 3, 2007) with all types of press asking questions, not just this person. He did the same thing with Brad for Babel and Jesse James and Angelina for Mighty Heart. He puts down the great questions and answers, but it is not necessarily him asking all the questions.

This writer’s articles are always good, but I think it is because he likes them, is a real journalist, and does not want to do the “gossip” thing, just real answers to real questions.

Again, thanks for this site. Great job.
