I knew that Angelina Jolie wrote a new opinion piece for Time magazine about the crisis and war crimes in Darfur, but since I was out most of the day yesterday I only got to read it this morning. A cup of coffee and reading about Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir is an interesting way to start off a Saturday morning, so if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a summary.

She starts off with explaining that the results of the international court’s investigation into Omar al-Bashir may create an international standard for trying war crimes around the world. The president was being tried for seven counts of war crimes as well as five separate crimes against humanity.
Angelina strongly expresses her feelings towards al-Bashir:
Bashir’s response to the indictments was an insult to the international community and the hundreds of thousands who have died in Darfur. He kicked out of his country 16 international aid groups who were desperately trying to save his citizens. He even appointed one of the suspects, Ahmed Haroun, to a committee supposedly investigating human-rights abuses in Darfur. You’ll struggle to find a better illustration of the culture of impunity that reigns in Khartoum.
She also goes on to describe some of the heart-breaking struggles for Darfur’s refugees – girls in the camps being raped, boys being murdered. It’s a kind of life that few of us can ever truly imagine and I’m grateful that Angelina brings so much attention to the issues.
I love when Angelina Jolie writes articles. In a world obsessed with physical appearance, it’s easy to sometimes assume that if someone is incredibly beautiful they might not be all that bright, but Angelina proves you can have beauty and brains at the same time.
I also really liked the way they attributed the article – instead of saying that Angie is an Oscar-winning actress, they ended the article with Jolie is co-chair of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation and a refugee advocate. Very appropriate for the cause at hand.
Read the full article on the Time website. It’s well worth the time.
Enjoy!

joliepittfanatic, I am sure you are on vacation but I wanted to say thanks for the hints about reading all comments. I have been having a hard time keeping up. Many grandparents responsiblities right now. Ligaya always nice when you drop in.
UNDER MOD:
Been promoting Angelina’s humanitarian work on Facebook (Ligaya Lucero):
posted 6 Angelina/UNHCR videos – all Darfur related except 1 Congo – plus 7 articles so far, and this is just the start. After all the humanitarian work, I’ll post the JP donations.
Happy vacay, JPF. Big apology to Pittwatchers 4 disappearing so suddenly – goodness, haven’t even wished Angie a Belated Happy BDay! Was about to then got pulled away & too many things happenened.
Biggest I’ve been doing is Facebook: promoting SUGAR, all U.K. raves, 93% Fresh T-meter rating, 96y% Top Critics at RottenTomatoes.com! AND promoting ANGELINA’s HUMANITARIAN work (refugees are my June theme, June 20 World Refugee Day, Darfur is last & this week’s theme), posted 6 Angelina/UNHCR videos – all Darfur related except 1 Congo – plus 7 articles so far, and this is just the start. After all the humanitarian work, I’ll post the JP donations.
OT: Two other things happened which shook me out of my complacency, and which I spent (and am still spending) a lot of time thinking, reading and writing about – the California Supreme Court affirming discrimination against a group in our society and the murder of Dr. George Tiller.
And my husband & I celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary on May 30. All in all, it’s been a very full couple of weeks.

Thank you :) I can say nothing but the same about yours!
if brad is filming in the U.S , angelina and kids will be in the u.s.
they have never been in seperate countries for weeks on end when one of them is filming. angelina is not going to france with kids while brad goes to L.A to film. you’ll see soon enough. trust.
Love Angelina and all the work that she does. Hope the Jolie-Pitt family will stay together forever.
I watched Mr & Mrs Smith on FX. I have the dvd but still watch it .Loved it.
kimmy- Why am I not surprised (about the marriage rumor, I mean)? At least that’s a postive rumor rather than a negative one for a change! :) I’m sure next will be seeing rumors about them adopting and/or Angie being pregnant. I just wish they’d leave the J-Ps alone altogether, though.
Neela- I will! :)
Hey TASHA i’m watching it too!!! :-D
after the recycled rumors about “splitting-up” here comes another recycled rumor.. “their finally tying the knot!” :) gee.. don’t know what they really wanted, those tabs.. it’s really a cycle of rumors when we dont hear or see the jolie-pitt’s..
Mr. And Mrs. Smith is on right now on FX.
joliepittfanatic, enjoy your vacation! we will miss you! :)
our classes have been suspended due to that swine flu virus.. i’m on my fourth year at college and i really don’t like it to be suspended since we’re on a quarterly schedule now! goodness! hope i won’t get that flu..
Angie your the best! love you! God Bless you more!
joliepittfanatic, be sure to post as soon as you can when you get back from your vacation :) enjoy.
007, i really enjoy your posts, too. you’re very insightful.
My goodness, her father must be so proud,as I am sure her mother would be.What a force these two are.
A little off topic, but I’ve been thinking re the National Enquirer dribble, it may be
entirely possible that Angie indeed will spend time with the children in france while Brad films elsewhere. Maybe now with 6 little ones and two that need to be in school and the chateau so obviously the best place for them it would be understandable. Perhaps someone got wind of this and blew it up into abrekup. I’m just saying so we won’t all freak out should part of the vicious article be true.
I have read the article she wrote in Time Magazine, and indeed it was well written and direct to the point. Seldom you would see a beautiful celebrity who got brains and good heart as well. More power to you Angie. God bless you and your family always .
Oh and that was as a response to D u c k s -beautiful faces=high IQ- comment.
Cheers!
Not a completely well-founded “study”. And I’d think that the likes of Stephen Hawking, Yoichiro Nambu or Albert Einstein (hey, why not Leonardo Fibonacci for that matter) might disagree ;)
Haha, think it has very little to do with how one looks on the outside. And being smart doesn’t necessarily have to correspond with an exceptionally high IQ – you can have an average IQ but well balanced off with a developed EQ.
Angelina’s just made the effort to inform herself on matters that are important to her. And has decided to actively do something about the injustice.
My god this was so off the topic! Haha…
And J o l i p i t t f a n a t i c , you’re quite right. The best thing to do is to ignore that trend and bring forth the things that D O matter. Have a great vacation!
just because angelina gets stupid hate over her charity work does mean brad should aswell. two wrongs don’t make a right. both brad and angelina could care less what ignorant haters say, so long as real people in need are helped.
yes, I wonder how many of the trash-media-mags will carry this story . . . . . how very brave Angelina is to do this work; we know how much it upsets her to venture into the camps where there is so much hardship and the people suffer much brutality. Surely it must be somewhat uplifting for these long-suffering people to see Angelina and know she cares and is willing to ‘stick-her-neck-out’ – she always seems to show& portray genuine concern, and I feel sure that she always follows-up such visits with whatever actions she can. The children will grow-up with an incredible sense of their privilege, and an equal show of concern for any such persecuted people.
we at least have the utmost respect for her involvement in these matters. Let’s hope & pray that now AJ is recently crowned the most influential woman / person in the media, the world will at least be more prepared to listen to her campaign and not forget the suffering and persecution of millions of refugees fleeing their homes.
