Any Jesse James reactions?

I can’t see Brad Pitt’s new movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford yet because it isn’t playing anywhere near me at this time. However, I’d love to hear some reactions. Have any of you awesome readers gone to see it yet if it was released in your area? Please feel free to share what you thought of it! As with most movies, it’s been getting a mix of reviews.

Monsters And Critics gave it a pretty good review:

Unlike previous treatments of legend Jesse James, this story keeps the focus on the relationship between James and his eventual killer, cousin Bob Ford. Refusing to be a western, the film is a psychological study of the mutual disintegration of the two men. James eventually self-destructs amidst a legion of imaginary devils born of his murderous quest for revenge in the wake of the Civil War. Ford degenerates into a parasite with no life other than the pieces of Jesse James his cousin doles out to him, complete with the psychotic self-hatred and random violence that made up the last days of his life.

Brad Pitt has large shoes to fill, playing a man who has become much bigger in death than he was in life. In the smartest move of the film Dominik devotes zero screen time to the Buffalo Bill antics of the popular version of the American gun-slinger and keeps the focus on his spiraling psychological breakdown. Pitt depicts James not as a fearless Robin Hood supported by the ill-treated Union masses in the wake of the war, but as a traumatized veteran cast adrift in peacetime without closure and with no alternative means to violence in making a living.

Okay, your turn!

I saw AMH and I thought it was a great movie. I do not agree that it is a “flop”. I predict that AMH will do very well in Europe. The US is not the only market. Once it is up for an Oscar people will go out to see it. As for the JJ movie I will have to wait for some of your reviews before I go see it. I do not like westerns and I have never had much of an interest in JJ.

i think it’s going to be quite some time before i see the movie here in the philippines. from what i’ve read from the critics though, a number of them weren’t impressed, but there were a few that were. that being said, i’ve never really paid attention to what critics say because the whole whether-or-not-you-like-a-movie deal is very subjective. i’ve been a brad pitt fan for a long time now, and i can honestly say that i think some of his movies have been boring (e.g. meet joe black), but boring or not, i still go to see his movies precisely because i’m a fan and i want to support him. that being said, i can’t wait to see this movie, bad or not.

Thank you Sherry for asking our opinion about Brad’s movie. I did not see it yet since I live 50 miles from the theater where it was being shown in Los Angeles and my weekend was hectic and spent it with my husband and my son. But the minute it comes in Orange County, I will surely take my husband to see it. I guess, some people are keeping the fairy tale of Brad with Jennifer Aniston and will comment on anything against Angie to try to keep it alive. Well, folks, Brad is “just not into her” anymore. He said however, that they are friends and nobody can erase that. He fell out of love in 2004 from JA and fell in love with Angie in the same year. I guess love is powerful enough that he chased Angie all over the globe. He followed her to England (her residence) and then to Africa. And everybody knows that it was Brad who chased a reluctant Angie. Now everybody is blaming Angie for falling in love in return. Trashing her is useless, because it could have been another woman since Brad’s perspective during his marriage was no longer working for the two of them. They could have adopted a child if JA cannot get pregnant. But two people need to agree to make it work. If these two people are not in the same tune, then they can make the decision to part. So, enough of the blame on Angie. She supports Brad 100% and gets the blame and being called names. Brad’s career and his films are much better now than “The Mexican,” or “Spy Game.” AMH can still pick up cash when it goes on DVD. I think saying something is a flop is more personal to others who are haters of Brad and Angie. Don’t forget, JA’s movies: “Derailed, Friends with money, Rumor has it, shown almost in one year were all flops too. So don’t blame Angie for everything just because Brad fell deeply in love with her and vice versa. They talk about their family life because we want to share their happiness with them and the reporters really asked them. Dianne S. was more interested in his personal life than the movie. Leave Angie and this site alone.

I have not seen the movie since it hasn’t arrived on our side of the pond yet but am definately will be going to see it.

By the way winnie the poo’poo, you were asked to comment about the movie not about the promotion of it. Anyways, Brad and Angie would never talked about their private lives if the inteviewer/reporter did not asked. As matter of fact I’m betting they would prefer not talking about their family so much but we are all so facinated by their family and out of respect and because they care about their fans , they answered and opened up some.

  6. By loved AOJJ

Saw AOJJ yesterday. Loved loved it. Thought about it after I left the theatre. The film is visually beautiful. Brad is Jesse James, a riveting performance, his soul is seen in his eyes. Casey is great, you grow to dislike him intensely. Sam Rockwell is also great. Found myself humming the music today. Please go see it if you can, you will enjoy it. It is long but no one left before it was over. You just want somehow for Jesse as violent as he is to live.

I don’t understand the first poster. Brad is in the movie not Angelina. She is suporting him as all partners do. Brad said she helped with the editing of AOJJ and she did a good job. The movie is great. I may go see it again.

    hello all!

I haven’t had theplleasure of seeing the film as it is not playing in my city…

But my sister who lives in Los Angeles has seen themovie. I will go ahead and say my sister is not a big fan of Brad or Angie. But she called me immediately after seeing the film and told me it was an amazing film. she is a film major so she tends to be a harder critic because she has some background on how films are made and what they should be doing…

Anyhow she told me that the movie was beautifully shot and that the director was an amazing cinematographer. She also said Casey Affleck was mesmerizing. And finally she said that Brad gave a sensational performance one of his best and when asked to fill out a survey about the film she made the comment that Brad’s was the best in the movie.

I can’t wait to see it! she told me to see it as soon as I can. So that was her review! hope its helpful! I know it was for me

also, winnie, brad’s not a one-dimensional person. he’s not just an actor. the guy has so many roles, and again, fatherhood i think is the best role or “career” (if you can even call it that) he has ever had.

Sherry, I will just resubmit my review. If the other one shows as well….so be it. :)

My daughter, a scriptwriter for movies, and I saw this movie on Saturday at the ArcLight Hollywood Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday 9/22/2007.

    The theatre was packed.

The movie was riveting and intense.

I was completely immersed in the story, the period and the personalities. I guess that is why the movie did not impress me as being overly long.

I expressed a desire to see it again when it is released nationwide and my daughter said she did not think she could see it again because while watching it she felt as though she was sitting on a keg of dynamite that was ready to go off at any given moment. I realized then, that her comment reflected my feelings exactly. I think we held our collective breaths until the move finished. It was that intense.

Even Jesse James himself expressed, in the movie, the feelings that I felt as I watched him when he said, “there is no peace when Jesse James is around.” He spoke the truth, because his presence always brought with it an extremely uncomfortable, agitated, feeling of fear and foreboding.

We left the theatre stunned, as well did many other people we observed.

Surprisingly, there were some applause when the movie concluded. Usually in Hollywood there are no applause for any movies. I think that is a testament to how good this picture truly is.

I personally think Brad Pitt genuinely earned the Best Actor Award in Venice, earlier. His performance is penetrating. He is Jesse James. There was no trace of the actor “Brad Pitt” while he was on the screen.

Casey Afflect is outstanding. But without Jesse, he would not have the ‘impact’ his performance carries.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who would like to see a poetically delivered historic tale of a bigger than life outlaw.

Whether it is all true or not, it is……can I say “entertaning?” I am not one to enjoy violent films, but the violence in this is not gratuitous but a necessary part of the entire package.

The musical score was so appropriate and deepl moving.

I think both Brad and Angie should be nominated for Oscars this year. She for A Mighty Heart and he for The Assasination of Jesse James, etc.

    That is my unbiased opinion.

oh, winnie. where to start . . .
you are talking about the brad pitt who has about a few films lined up. the same man receiving praises for his work on jesse james. the same man who owns a production company that’s been churning out some highly respectable films (can we say “the departed”?). the same man with a handful of humanitarian projects. you mean, this man’s career is about to wane because he is with a woman he loves and because he loves his kids??? hmmm, for someone whose career looks bleak, he sure is getting a lot of attention. oh look, even from you. and you may not like angelina, but you’re showering her with your time and attention as well. tsk. tsk. coz really, what exactly would you call your presence here??

you know, watch his interview on gma, and you will notice it was diane who asked him and angie about their personal life. also, clearly, to him, fatherhood and family outweighs his career.

and even if (and that’s a big dubious IF) brad’s career dissipates, what does it matter? he’ll have his family, his angelina, and his wealth.

plus, winnie and samantha, even if brad and angie do not do promotions for their work, they are still sought after. they are hounded by the paps and by the general public. they don’t even ask for the attention. sheesh. it is the media and we, the curious (fans and haters alike), that overexpose them. look at you, guys, you are checking out their fan site.

and in defense of lori, i think she hasn’t really made any bad comments towards angie or brad on this post. if anything, she mentioned that she thinks they will remain happy. she’s commending their new found sense of purpose and fulfillment.
i know there’s been a bit of a conflict with her, but i think she’s trying to be more harmonious with us. :)

Hi Sherry, I submitted my review of the movie early this morning 9/23/2007 and I have yet to see it on your site. Did something happen to it?

I also wanted to make a correction, I saw the movie with my daughter on Saturday, 9/22/2007 not 9/23/2007. I hope to see my review show up soon.

    Thank you,

    Lana

  15. By Robert C. James

I am a Great Grandson of Jesse Woodson James and have written the movie screenplay of THE SECOND LEGEND OF JESSE WOODSON JAMES (c) 1993. The REAL Jesse lived to be 107 years age. He was still alive when I was born in 1951. The cover up by the James family was that Robert Ford killed Charlie Bigelow, and not Jesse James.

Hi winnie, its not your fault we have a lot of judgemental people like you, its not about Angie its about Brads movie, If your boyfriend says lets go to my premier would you say no, I DONT THINK SO, I think if you have your favorite celeb you are to support them no matter, If Angie doesnt go with him people start saying they are fighting and if she goes with him we always find something to say, I think we should just enjoy theremovies, we cant be pleased, I cant wait to go and watch the movie, I am not going to listen to negative reviews about this movie I will be my on judge of the movie

  19. By lori

blessbrangelina, where exactly did I say that I thought Jesse James would be a flop? I myself am going to go see it for I heard Brad does an excellent job in it! Don’t try to put words in my mouth, I can speak for myself just fine, thank you!

I said A Mighty Heart flopped and it did, I saw the box office returns and didn’t make them up! I was hoping it would do better for I thought it was a story that needed to be told, not just worshipping Angelina Jolie!

  20. By a fan

To the first poster – you are on a Brad Pitt fan site and are the first to respond. Both Angiie and Brad are very talented actors. Both choose roles not for the commercial success, so that is why they seldom appear in blockbusters. Yet they did command the public’s attention. The tabliod pic and stories are not the result of PR efforts. The media is out to make a buck off this couple. They fascinate people – and all they do is just try to live their lives. This movie is not showing in my city – but Brad can hold an audience attention – so I know the movie will do well. But with Brad parting ways with Warner Bros. – I don’t know if the movie will be in wider release. If they were smart they would schedule it for a wider release.
