I can’t see Brad Pitt’s new movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford yet because it isn’t playing anywhere near me at this time. However, I’d love to hear some reactions. Have any of you awesome readers gone to see it yet if it was released in your area? Please feel free to share what you thought of it! As with most movies, it’s been getting a mix of reviews.
Monsters And Critics gave it a pretty good review:
Unlike previous treatments of legend Jesse James, this story keeps the focus on the relationship between James and his eventual killer, cousin Bob Ford. Refusing to be a western, the film is a psychological study of the mutual disintegration of the two men. James eventually self-destructs amidst a legion of imaginary devils born of his murderous quest for revenge in the wake of the Civil War. Ford degenerates into a parasite with no life other than the pieces of Jesse James his cousin doles out to him, complete with the psychotic self-hatred and random violence that made up the last days of his life.
Brad Pitt has large shoes to fill, playing a man who has become much bigger in death than he was in life. In the smartest move of the film Dominik devotes zero screen time to the Buffalo Bill antics of the popular version of the American gun-slinger and keeps the focus on his spiraling psychological breakdown. Pitt depicts James not as a fearless Robin Hood supported by the ill-treated Union masses in the wake of the war, but as a traumatized veteran cast adrift in peacetime without closure and with no alternative means to violence in making a living.

Lastly, I want to say I am a Brad fan rather than Angelina. Also, I sometimes critisize them but judging people according to their box-office results is so much. I just can’t stand this. Also, I am not living in US but when I look at the forums I can see the differences. I agree with you MERCEDES, in Europe people look at their works differently now. I remember when MAMS opened I read many negative comments about them in my country because the articles said that they are very talented actors and they should do better movies than MAMS but unfourtunately in US everyting depends on box office. It is sad but true.
I personally think that the idea of Brad taking Z to the Park in NY for publicity is plain stupid! I have always thought she was his favorite child and I still do, however, I think he enjoys playing with her and he took her to a park like any other normal father would.
Winnie, I don’t understand your comments. We were asked for our opinion of AOJJ. I gave mine as I loved the film. You are angry that a father takes his 2 year old to a park? What kind of person are you? Are you maybe upset because Zee is Ethiopian? Brad has taken his three oldest kids to parks in NYC but you did not mention anyone but Zee. You say two actors popularity is declining when all worldwide polls say they are at the top of the popularity heap, that Brad is a gold mine for studios because he is so popular all over the world? Brad is getting movie offers left and right. He has movies lined up for years. Angelina is working in a Clint Eastwood movie next, only the best work in an Eastwood movie. AMH and AOJJ are not going to be big blockbuster movies, AMH just opened overseas last week in a few countries and will be opening in other countries through the end of the year, it’s premature to say it is a flop. AOJJ just opened in a few theatres last Friday. Brad has said how much they do not want to be talked about all the time, especially by tabloids, they want some peace in their lives. The only conclusion I make is that you are personally biased against them and why you are that way only you know. They are active with their Jolie-Pitt Foundation, working in NOLA, meeting people at the UN, and both are presenting at the Clinton Initiative this coming Wednesday. Brad and Angelina are living loving lives with their family and both appear very happy. That’s more than you seem to be.
jjoy, with all due respect, I am not saying that Angelina single handedly is ruining his career, Pitt is helping. Can you deny that their popularity continue to decline. You say that they are in the spotlight because they have to be, and that is not true. When Brad do not want to be found Brad is not found. Now, they were in DC, I live in DC, and there was not big hooplah that they were here. So, excuse me if you feel I am being biased, because truth be told, there are not many people that are talking about them lately, and it is because of their over exposure. Did Brad really need to take Z to the park for the photo op, no. He has never ever done that before, so it does appear a little suspect when he do it right about time for a movie. So, I am sorry if what I express bothers you, but there was a time that they were on top of the world, and for two A-list celebrities to get such a small amount of money in the box-office, is significant in hollywood. They can get all the great reviews possible what helps celebrities in hollywood, is the Benjamins, nothing more and nothing less. Peace
Blessbrangelina, thank you for your fair comments. I am not a big fan of Angelina at all but I admire her talent and have always thought she was the Star in this family, however, since Jesse, Brad can hold his own with her any time with the acting and that should be clear to everyone!
I don’t know why my comment is awaiting moderation for I didn’t say anything negative about Brad! I do think he is becoming a better actor as time goes by and Babel certainly proved that and Jesse will put the final stamp on it.

Everyone knows the movie is long. Since last year they reported on it’s length. She doesn’t say much beyond that, which convinces me that she has not seen the movie.
Those who have seen it had other aspects of the movie to talk about other than the length.
After 3 years she really needs to get over it already! Would she rather they had stayed together and made each other miserable.
What part of “nothing in common by the end” does she not understand???

My response was written when only your one sentence response was visible. Your sentence ‘suggested’ that his popularity was waining due to his fame, and this led me to believe that you were supporting Winnie.

Ok, I’m young kinda like younger than 17(almost 15) but i can see R rated movies if they aren’t to bad. I was wondering is there any stuff that would inappropriate stuff in it? I love brad, and really want to see it but I’m not sure if i should.
I think that Brad is becoming a better actor as time goes on, I thought he did an excellent job in Babel, my husband loved it. However, Angie is the Star in this family, the family revolves around her. Has AMH been nominated for any awards as of yet? It didn’t do well at the box office in the US, perhaps it may do better overseas and I hope it does. I do think Brad should be given credit for his acting abilities for his own talent, not hers, I say this for I have read more than once he has been doing better roles since meeting her, he is not Mr. Tomb Raider, and I enjoyed those films myself too.
I do have a problem with whomever doesn’t praise them constantly, not bashing but not praising either, being called “haters”. Why do they have to be Haters just because they aren’t idolizing this couple? I don’t understand that. And I also don’t understand why Jennifer’s name has to be brought into it, she is in the past and people should move on.

First time to post (always lurking here: But I just want to share my own take on the TAOJJ movie (which I posted yesterday at Just Jared blog)….
Finally got home from a late dinner….So to continue my precis of the movie TAOJJ….
Now, about the TAOJJ movie – as a whole. the movie was beautifully done. Each character (small or big) was very memorable, even Sam Sheppard’s character whose scenes was miniscule. The panoramic shots were stunning – similar style from chineses epic movies like Hero or House of Flying Daggers ((by Yimou Zhang – a chinese director). Every scenes were very poignant and unpredictable because it reflects the personality of Jesse James himself – precarious and erratic. It was a pure aesthetic experience for me to watch this movie, that I didn’t even notice the running time. I was just totally mesmerized from the stunning visual presentation and the story telling style.
As for the actors:
Brad Pitt’s acting was very poetic – you can almost feel and hear what goes through the mind of Jesse James through his eyes, even without saying a word. The characater Jesse James is quite fascinating that I can literally write a hundred page analysis of his psyche. Severe symptoms of acute depression was so palpable in Jesse James character which Brad gave tremendous justice portraying it – totally sublime !!!….
Casey Affleck – brilliant acting. Again, his acting was so profound, that you can feel the fear and the anxiety he goes through in the character (you can almost touch the ambivalence of emotions that he portrayed).
Sam Rockwell – another great actor that I admire so greatly. His character in the movie was so heartbreaking – Another brilliant acting….
The rest of the casts were all very good which contributed to the whole success of this movie…..
The rest is for everyone to really see the movie when they do a wide opening after next week – it is certainly a must…..
I am reading all your comments about a mighty heart and I think that you misunderstood the concept of this film. I am from Spain so I didn’t have the chance to watch the film until 2 weeks ago and I must say that it is a great film. Very sad and dramatic, but fantastic nevertheless. And I don’t think that it flopped, because nobody intended to do a commercial movie in the first place. Michael winterbottom is a cult director praised by the critics here in Europe but he is not a commercial director. He makes low budget films and Brad knew it when he contacted him so I don’t think that the box results disappointed him. This is an oscar movie. Angelina will probably receive some nominations (golden globes, oscars…) and Brad’s production company will obtain recognition and he may even be nominated himself as a producer.
finally I think that everyone must admit that since meeting angelina, Brad has started to make serious films, and even here in Europe critics that used to consider him a hollywood product, start to see him as an actor. Babel, the assasination…., a mighty heart, god grew tired of us… these are the kind of films that give an actor recognition and allow him to work with directors like the coen brothers, (george clooney knows this himself)…… He has enough money, maybe now he just wants to start being considered as a good actor.
I want to add something. I am sure AMH will make a profit after the international release but let’s assume that yes AMH was a flop movie so what? Angelina and Brad have some flop movies like any other famous actors and actress. But they are still in the industry and it seems that roles have still been offered to them. What is the problem? Unfourtunately, people and media have twisted everything about them to create news. Also, both Brad&Angie don’t want to act so much in the future if you look at their interviews, you can see it. Another important things is that, they didn’t talk about so much their personal lives if you look at their interviews, they only answer two or there questions but media only interesting this part and continusly has given that quotas like as a new one. I am sure if toblaid will stop their stupid their Brangelina stories, they will never talk. I am sure they are sick of do you want any other children or why aren’t you married questions.
Anyway, the purpose of both AMH and AJJ isn’t making a so much profit. Both movies mostly took so positive reviews. I am glad both of them. I don’t like Western movies but I will watch AJJ in theaters for Brad. Everyone should not like Brad or Angelina but if you don’t like them why you wasted your time for them? And how people critisized movies without seeing?

The movie, I thought, was the topic here. Perhaps Brad should just be a father which he enjoys and does best. It is safest for him and the family right now.
OMG!!!Some people again started to talk about AJJ without seeing. AJJ is not a box office film like AMH. What people expect I don’t understand.

i know it is all about freedom of speech but hey, my mom told me that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all.. by the way, this movie is great, the cinematography is FAB-ulous. you have to watch it even if you do not like western movie. and i don’t agree with people who thinks that brad’s career going downhill.. the only time he won an award was during his time with gwyneth and that’s saying something! After 10 years, he won best actor at Venice. I think his life has seemed to take a turn for the better since he hooked up with Angelina.. but hey, that’s my opinion!
