Apple and American Idol Have Teamed Up!

itunes As of this moment, Apple has acquired the exclusive rights to the audio and video performances on American Idol which means that the downloads will now only be available on Apple’s iTunes (they will also sponsor online streaming of contestant performances).  Starting this week, you’ll be able to pay 99 cents for the Top 24 performances and then on March 11, iTunes will begin selling the videos of the Top 12 finalists for $1.99.

On the show, Apple’s iPod becomes the official digital music player for “Idol,” while the iPhone becomes the show’s official handset. (AT&T, the iPhone’s exclusive service provider, already is an “Idol” signature sponsor.)

“We think ‘American Idol’ viewers are going to love the ability to purchase and download ‘Idol’ performaces from iTunes,” said Apple iTunes VP Eddy Cue.

The other American Idol sponsors are Coke, AT&T and Ford.

How do you feel about this?  Those of you who watched this past season of Canadian Idol may have noticed the not-so-subtle product shoutouts with the “Honey Nut Cheerios Recap” and an entire segment called the “Kraft Kitchen Confidential.”  I thought it was ridiculous (ridiculously funny, that is)!

Product placement aside, the Kraft Kitchen Confidential segments actually told us more about the personalities of the competitors than was shown on the tv broadcast itself. It was certainly more worthwhile to view than the exceedingly lame “All Access” behind-the-scenes segments.
