I will admit that even without Jennie Garth (Kelly) or Shannen Doherty (Brenda) in this episode of 90210, the show was still pretty good. There’s a new juicy storyline and major drama at the end.
In Ryan Matthew’s class (Ryan Eggold), a feisty new student Kimberly (Jessica Lucas) is introduced. Annie (Shenae Grimes) tries to make her feel comfortable saying she’s no longer the new girl, but Kimberly gives her the major whiff. I don’t see a friendship between these two coming about.
In health class, Ethan (Dustin Milligan) and Annie are teamed up for a project where they must carry around a fake baby at all times — feeding it, changing it and caring for it — or it will cry (my kids have had to do this in school too). The teacher makes Ethan the stay-at-home dad in the scenario and Annie the high-powered attorney. Poor Navid (Michael Steger) is paired with a smart-aleck dude from class.
The unique Silver (Jessica Stroup) is planning to celebrate her half-birthday (half-way mark to her next birthday) by attending this Hollywood Forever Cemetery event where everyone will watch a Alfred Hitchcock movie on the lawn. Dixon (Tristan Wilds) is less than thrilled over horror movies, but wants to show an interest in what Silver enjoys.
Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) concentrates her efforts away from her parents’ failed marriage and on to best friend Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes), because she’s heard about the drug rumors. Adrianna tells her she has nothing to worry about, that she’s just been stressed. She compares her mom to a Dina Lohan-wannabe, which explains a lot about her behavior. Adrianna is still blaming Annie for ruining the play (get over it, already!) and tells Naomi that Annie has the audacity to audition against her for a part in a horror flick. Actually, Annie helped her get the audition, but Adrianna doesn’t offer her any credit.
When Naomi tells her she’s seen her with eye drops (to hide the side effects of the drugs), Adrianna switches it back to Naomi asking what’s going on in her world. Naomi says everything: She broke up with Ethan and her parents are divorcing. She needs her best friend and wants to hang out with her like old times. They switch out necklaces for good luck.
Harry (Rob Estes) meets with Naomi’s mom Tracy (Christina Moore) and another lady about an upcoming school fund-raiser, but when it’s over, Tracy uses her time to tell Harry she wants to hire a private investigator to find their son. In the pilot episode, we learned that Tracy and Harry dated as teens. When he returned to Beverly Hills, Tracy told him that she was pregnant with his baby and gave him up for adoption 22 years ago. Harry wants to think about the private investigator thing.
At the horror movie auditions, Annie is up first and does well. Adrianna can’t seem to focus until she gets high, and then she ends up winning the role.
At the Peach Pitt, Naomi stops by and sees Annie and Ethan sharing baby time together. It’s a little awkward, but Naomi says she’s waiting to spend the evening with Adrianna. After she leaves them alone, Annie tells Ethan that he and Naomi will be back together before long. He says it’s over for good this time.
As Kelly is on her two-week break from school trying to reconnect with Dylan to see if a future is possible, Silver is home alone and ready to take advantage of the situation. I don’t think Kelly is going to like Silver painting the walls black! Dixon thinks their alone time is going to mean make-out time, but instead Silver wants him to watch a horror movie marathon to get him used to watching scary movies. But Dixon falls asleep, which irritates Silver, and then is late for curfew, which gets him in trouble too.
A funny part of the show is when Debbie (Lori Loughlin) tells Tabitha (Jessica Walter) that she doesn’t need to flash the gardener in the future. Harry comes in on the conversation and begs his mom not to swim naked, at least not while the gardener is around. Tabitha says she’s just “letting my freak flag fly.” Tabitha is a riot. They need to give her more of a storyline.
When Adrianna doesn’t show up, Naomi stops by her house to talk to her mom, who says Adrianna is probably celebrating getting the movie part. Yep, Adrianna is celebrating by taking drugs.
In Ryan Matthew’s class, Kimberly is acting up and gets lunch detention. During detention, Kimberly asks about Ryan’s love life, but he tries to ignore her the best he can. On his computer is an online dating site.
Harry tells Tracy he’s talked to Debbie and they are all for finding out more about their son, but he wants to do it in a more traditional way. But it’s a little too late because Tracy already has the private investigator on the case. Though he’s just learned about their “baby” together, Tracy has spent the last 22 years wondering about her son and couldn’t wait anymore. Harry apologizes for not being there for her (though he didn’t know anyway), and they end up hugging. Tracy tries to kiss him, but Harry pushes her away and tells her it didn’t happen.
At school, Naomi confronts Adrianna about why she blew her off, which Adrianna says wasn’t on purpose. She was just celebrating. Naomi sees her with a lipstick container she knows from past experience with Adrianna that it contains drugs. At one time the container belonged to Naomi, we learn. Naomi encourages Adrianna to seek help to no avail just as cops and drug-sniffing dogs come in to check the lockers. Adrianna starts to freak out that she’s going to lose her part in the movie, so Naomi tells her to give her the lipstick container. Annie is walking nearby and sees the exchange.
Naomi walks away from the police as does Adrianna, but when Naomi starts in a run, a female cop chases her into the bathroom where Naomi attempts to dump the drugs in the commode. Naomi is arrested in front of the whole school. Ryan Matthews isn’t happy with the way the drug search went down and argues with Harry over it. Harry says they shouldn’t be bringing drugs to school. Well, duh!
Annie tells Ethan that she saw Naomi take the drugs from Adrianna and thinks its wrong for Naomi to go to jail for what Adrianna did. Ethan talks to Adrianna encouraging her to tell the truth to free Naomi.
Naomi’s dad gets her out of jail but when she returns home, her parents are searching her room. They can’t believe that she’s using drugs again. Obviously, she did do drugs for a short period and her parents think the pending divorce has led her down the path again. Naomi tells them the drugs weren’t hers and tells her parents that she wasn’t doing it for attention. Naomi’s dad doesn’t think he can get her off the charges and convinces her to tell them the truth.
Adrianna at least stops by to check on Naomi, but she’s not ready at this point to take the rap. She wants Naomi to try to get out of the charges first. When Naomi tells her it’s not going to work that she had her back and now it’s Adrianna’s turn, she finally agrees to tell Naomi’s lawyer that she did it. Only, she needs an hour or so to tell her mother. With Adrianna’s addiction as strong as it is, it was wrong of Naomi to let her leave. What drug addict wants to turn themselves in knowing they are going to have to face not only charges but rehab as well?
At home, Adrianna plans to tell her mother what’s going on but can’t because her mom has decorated the house and is celebrating her new movie role. She tells Adrianna that they were close to foreclosure on the house and that without her acting job, they wouldn’t have a place to live. She even had to sell her purses on eBay. OMG! I guess you can see what’s going to happen, right?
At the Hollywood Forever event, Silver is happy that Dixon has at least cared enough about her to learn about one of her favorite bands (since he’s not into scary movies). Silver, Dixon, Ethan and Annie are all hanging out together (and the fake baby). Annie is impressed that Ethan cared enough for his ex-girlfriend to talk to Adrianna. Ethan says he is there for anyone he cares about. Poor Navid and his classmate are forced to hang out together to watch the baby — but the classmate ditches him. Navid needs a woman!
Annie and Ethan argue over whether or not their evening was a date. Yep, looks like they will be dating pretty soon.
Ryan has brought a date from the online dating service with him. She’s an blonde actress wannabe who says she once played a corpse in a CSI episode. She’s also quite proud of her role in a herpes commercial. Ryan tries to joke with her, but there’s just no chemistry between them.
He does seem to have chemistry with Kimberly, the feisty student who makes fun of his date and recognizes her from the herpes commercial. She’s disappointed in his dating choice. Ryan tells her he thinks she has a schoolgirl crush on him, but Kimberly says that is “gross.”
As punishment for being late for curfew, Harry and Debbie are at the Hollywood Forever event too. Harry tells her about the kiss (I’m surprised he told her) and now Debbie dislikes Tracy even more. Debbie misses Kansas and her friends, but seems to get over the Tracy incident pretty fast. I see a cat fight in the future.
Adrianna disappoints Naomi by not showing up for the meeting with the lawyer. She is so sure her so-called best friend would be there for her. She’s facing jail time and future college and job problems. (Let’s keep in mind her parents are rich and she can probably get whatever job she wants, but okay).
Here’s the big whammy of the whole show: Harry excuses himself from Debbie. I’m thinking he’s going to meet with Tracy to tell her not to ever try to kiss him again. But no, he covertly meets with Kimberly, who it turns out is undercover posing as a student to find out who the drug supplier is. Kimberly tells Harry not to contact her again, as it threatens her cover.
So this opens up a whole new possible storyline: Kimberly is not a student. Her “Never Been Kissed” relationship is on a whole new level now because she could date Ryan once her undercover assignment is over. And if they use the “Never Been Kissed” playbook, Ryan could develop feelings for her but fight them because she is a student. Interesting.
This possibly storyline also gives Ryan something to do in case Kelly (played by Jennie Garth) leaves Beverly Hills for good in the future. We hope not, but that’s entirely up in the air at the moment.
Well, there’s one more pretty big whammy: Naomi is pissed that Adrianna didn’t show up for the meeting with the lawyer and now doesn’t even have the decency to answer her phone. As emergency workers try to revive Adrianna’s lifeless body (from an overdose), Naomi’s message to her can be heard: “You’re dead to me,” she tells her.
Things can’t get any worse for Naomi who has went from pampered princess with the perfect family and the perfect boyfriend to a girl who has lost her boyfriend, her happy family existence, and now even her freedom possibly. Do you see a breakdown coming?
