Avril Lavigne Song Controversy Recap Part 2

avril lavigne and chantal kreviazuk

After the Rubinoos accused Avril of basically stealing their song “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” fellow Canadian singer, Chantal Kreviazuk came out of the woodwork with plenty of things to say. While, after listening to the song, I understand the Rubinoos’ complaint, Chantal’s attack just seemed petty and mean. It surprised me because I love her as an artist, respect her as a songwriter and have been in love with her husband, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace for about 10 years. In the end, she just made herself look like an a$$. Here’s how things went down:

Chantal vs. Avril Part 1 – Chantal starts the fight:

“I mean, Avril, songwriter? Avril doesn’t really sit and write songs by herself or anything,” Kreviazuk tells Performing Songwriter magazine.

Read the rest, after the jump!

Kreviazuk and her husband, Our Lady Peace frontman Maida, co-wrote several songs with Lavigne for her last album, Under My Skin. The pop-punker even moved into the couple’s house in Malibu for a writing stint in the summer of 2003 and often praised Kreviazuk in interviews, saying the older songwriter gave her plenty of advice and was a close friend. Now, the honeymoon is over. Kreviazuk says she will “never work with [Lavigne] again” and accuses the spunky singer of plagiarism.

“I sent her a song two years ago called ‘Contagious,’ and I just saw the track listing to [The Best Damn Thing] and there’s a song called ‘Contagious’ on it and my name’s not on it,” Kreviazuk reveals. “What do you do with that?”

But Kreviazuk explains she isn’t going to press charges on her former BFF.

“I won’t do that,” she asserts. “I’ll just tell you. Art should not be subject to that kind of controversy. Art should be pure. In my head it is, anyway.”

Wow… that is a pretty bold thing to say about a song that you haven’t even heard and a pretty nasty thing to say about a fellow artist. Sure hope that doesn’t end up backfiring (oh, wait, it does!).

Chantal vs. Avril Part 2 – Avril Strikes Back!

Avril Lavigne is fighting back against claims she’s a songwriting plagiarist.

She takes particular aim at fellow Canadian songstress Chantal Kreviazuk’s suggestion that the punk princess swiped one of her tunes for her new album, “The Best Damn Thing.”

“Chantal’s comments are damaging to my reputation and a clear defamation of my character and I am considering taking legal action,” Lavigne wrote on her website late Friday.

Kreviazuk’s recent claims to Performing Songwriter magazine are nothing more than sour grapes, Lavigne says, resulting from unsuccessful songwriting collaborations between the two.

“My decision to discontinue working with Chantal after co-writing together on my second record was simply based on the fact that we had no hits together. That is why her name is not on this record, despite her numerous attempts to be included, which were always denied. From my perspective, this is a clear case of bitterness.”

Lavigne also alleges that Kreviazuk e-mailed her after the magazine hit the stands to apologize for her suggestion that the song “Contagious” on Lavigne’s latest hit album was hers.

“I forgive her but I have to put the truth out there so my fans are not confused by these false accusations,” Lavigne wrote.

“Let it be crystal clear that I have not ripped anyone off or done anything wrong,” Lavigne wrote on her website Friday. “I do not deserve this negative press and attention. I take pride in the songs that I write and appreciate the opportunities to work with some great writers and musicians.”

Well, it’s good that Avril stood up for herself and refrained from saying negative things about Chantal. I don’t know if I could have had that much self control…

Chantal vs. Avril Part 3 – Chantal Apologizes

Days after being threatened with legal action by pop star Avril Lavigne, singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk is apologizing for suggesting the chart-topper stole her song.

Kreviazuk said Tuesday she never intended to call Lavigne’s songwriting ability or ethics into question when she spoke with Performing Songwriter Magazine last month. The Winnipeg songwriter retracted quotes that implied she wrote a song called “Contagious” on Lavigne’s latest disc but was never credited.

“When I saw the track listing to Avril’s new record, it caught my attention that she had the same title as a song I had sent her a while back,” Kreviazuk says in a statement issued by her and Lavigne’s record label, Nettwerk Music Group.

“When I heard it, I immediately realized it was a coincidence. The songs have nothing in common. … My statements and any inference from my statements, which call into question Avril’s ethics or ability as a respected and acclaimed songwriter, should be disregarded and are retracted.”

Nettwerk spokesman Rich Adams said Kreviazuk had never even heard the track until management played her the song.

Wow… that was totally avoidable and ridiculous. I mean, what was Chantal thinking? She’s an intelligent, talented woman. Why would she strike without knowing all of the facts. Sheesh.

Will there be a part 4? Only time will tell!

I would have been mad at someone for using my songs! I mean Avril is saying that they had no hits together but then how come she is still using her songs and not putting her name! I am sorry to say this but I think that Avril is wrong and yes the other lady was kind of harsh, but what would u do when someone is taking ur credit especially with Avril’s fame!
