History is like Jason Voorhees, it won’t die and It’ll sneak attack you with a machete. Okay, maybe not the latter but you can burn, bury and forget about it and history will come back. Over 20 years ago J.J. Fad (Just Jammin’ Fresh And Def) became the first female rap group to be nominated for a Grammy for their single Supersonic. The debut album (by the same title as the single) went platinum topping the billboards for over 4 months. I bought it for the first time two years ago, cassette tape format, at a Goodwill store in Stratford, Ontario. I was bugging out before I even played the tape because their garb looked straight out of a Fruition photo shoot and screamed streetwear creative origins circa 2007-2008. When I opened up the cassette liner I noticed Supersonic was produced by N.W.A. When you listen to the video (below) I’m sure you’ll react the same way I did. But seriously, scouts honor: Dre produced a pop-hip-hop dance album and it sounds like Thunderheist, Kid Sister or your choice of current electro-hip-hop acts. In 2009 the group put out a re-release and promised a reunion tour with the surviving members of the Original Fat Boys, although the date is to still be determined.
Now, without trying to come off overly cheesy I’ve gotta say that J.J. Fad is a little more of a classic then their name would suggest. Check out the album cover (above and to the left) and tell me you didn’t see them on The Cobra Snake, like yesterday. The video is below, enjoy as old becomes new again.
