'Common knowledge' is often wrong. There is no hard & fast rule cast in stone that children who live in the same house all their lives lead happy, successful adult lives, or that children with nomadic lives are doomed. 'Common' knowledge once held that women were not much better than children - that's why fathers, brothers, husbands, and even sons had to approve all the women's decisions and actions. It was 'common' knowledge that women were inferior and therefore shouldn't vote, marry without permission, own property, or hold jobs like doctors, lawyers, or even teachers and secretaries at one time. It was 'common' knowledge that women were to blame if a baby was a girl instead of the more desired boy. It was 'common' knowledge that blacks & other people of color were sub-human. I just saw an HBO documentary on the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High School, Little Rock, Arkansas; a fine upstanding Southern gentleman said it was common knowledge that segregation was biblical, and therefore God's will.

For every 2 studies that say kids are more stable if they live in the same house & neighborhood, another study says not so much. Among other things, I've worked in the mental health field for decades, and I can testify that, while same house/neighborhood is important, what matters more are family dynamics. When the parent(s) are emotionally absent, or abusive emotionally, physically, sexually, or psychologically to their kids, the kids are damaged even if they've lived in the same house forever with the same parents. If the parents hate each other, or one parent has serial relationships that don't last, kids are damaged even they live in the same house. If a family - like the Jolie-Pitts - lives a nomadic lifestyle, and the loving bonds are strong, the love provides the stability needed. In my experience, there were many more 'stay-put' kids with mental health issues than there were of the nomads.

Thank You, NEELA for your 9/16/07 post. I'd been struggling with how to say the same things, and you expressed them beautifully, clearly, and with grace.

We need to be careful about generalizations of studies and 'common knowledge.' These things change over time as we get more knowledge and understanding. Studies may have flawed methodology, analyzed with the wrong conclusions, outdated, and compromised by who's paying for the study (e.g., Big Tobacco, Big Oil, etc.).

Sherry and Maxie,

Matt Damon took this very issue was to task, when he was asked by one of the "harpies" from E' whether he babysat his Isabella.

He's response was exactly that;

"she's my daughter so I don't think its babysitting".

I don't think the person asking GOT the distinction though!

Maxie - If I can get personal for a second, that is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves in life. I am caring for my children, raising my children, tending to my children, etc. And then if I leave them with my husband people will inevitably say, "Oh, is their Dad babysitting? How nice!" To which I always clench my teeth and say, "no, he's not BABYSITTING seeing as how they are HIS kids too!"

Grrr. :)

Thank you for pointing out the double standard. I notice that when a woman is taking care of the children it is called just that. When the father takes care of the children it is called "babysitting". Like it is some kind of an extra chore that he is doing.There are two parents involved and responsable here, that is more then a lot of children have. Why aren't people harping on Brad to take time off?
