Brad Pitt to star in The Odyssey

Variety.com is reporting that Brad Pitt is being pegged to star in The Odysseey, based on the epic Greek masterpiece written by Homer. While he hasn’t officially signed on, Warner Bros. is setting it up in the hopes of having George Miller directing, Plan B producing, and Brad Pitt in the lead role of Odysseus.

I think that this could be a really great idea except for one thing. WB has decided they won’t exactly be following the original story of The Odyssey, which follows Odysseus’ torturous journey home from Troy, a trip that takes years and leads him into dangers like Sirens, a Cyclops, and Hades. Instead, they’re adapting the story and setting it in a futuristic space story.

WHY? Why would they do that? The Odyssey is a brilliant piece of literature packed full of adventure and excitement. It most certainly does not need to be set in outer space in the future – Ancient Greek mythology is perfectly adrenaline-pumping all on its own. I’m wondering how Brad Pitt will feel about the adaptation. I know he reads a great deal in constant search for good movie ideas and having already done a film like Troy, I have trouble picturing him agreeing to do this total upheaval of The Odyssey. I guess time will tell, and if he does film it, I’ll watch it out of curiosity, but in all honesty, everything inside of me is cringing at the thought of such an incredible and ridiculously huge change in the original story.

What do you think?

(Thanks for the link, Ligaya!)

HELLO! (UK), 21 OCTOBER 2008, (bought mine at Barnes & Noble) has a wonderful COVER and 13-PAGE PHOTOSPREAD of JPs in its great large format ( 9 ½ x 13 in.) – PHOTOS FROM PREMIERE, NEW ORLEANS WALK & PLAYGROUND, including a lovely 1 ½ page closeup of Angie under an umbrella, a couple of her looking very tenderly at Pax, and a gorgeous one of an exhuberant Pax & widely grinning Maddox. Lots of quotes I haven’t seen elsewhere (some of which address some concerns Pittwatchers have), including:

“We don’t take much notice of the rumours, to be honest – people have been spreading rumours about me for years. We have fun, we have each other, and we have a lot of love in our life. And ANYBODY WHO HAS LOVE IN THEIR LIFE HAS SOMETHING THAT IS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

“Getting dressed up can be something of a challenge. Considering that during my hair and makeup session I had one twin on each breast, it’s amazing I was together at all.”

With Angelina Brad much in demand, the family frequently travels to live in new places around the world as mum and dad film on location, and ANGELINA MAKES SURE HER KIDS ARE GOING TO BE HAPPY WHEREVER THEY ARE. “We take some time before we go to find places that are good for kids. We can’t do this in person because it would to be too complicated, but we’ll ask for recommendations from friends who are from the area, or if we’re in a place where we’re making a film, then someone from the production company will go ahead to check it out for us. It works out fine.

“We’re in Berlin right now because Brad is making a film there, AND THAT’S GREAT BECAUSE WE HAVE LOTS OF FRIENDS THERE. Brad knows a lot of German architects, so WE KNOW LOTS OF FAMILIES WITH KIDS, WHO WE’VE BEEN ABLE TO SPEND TIME WITH.

“We’ve only been there a week…It’s a great place for a family, and the kids are already picking up some German. Certainly Shiloh is – we went on a playdate and she kept sayng ‘Nein, nein, nein,’ [heh]so at least she knows that word!”

As one of the world’s most famous families, however, a day out is not without its difficulties. “When we go to fun-type places with the kids, we can’t usually do it in the normal way. We have to go after hours, or we have to invite every single family we know in town and take over the whole place. But we also do take a chance sometimes and sneak into places just as a family – we brave it for a while and hope it goes well.

MAKING THEMSELVES AT HOME. Whenever the family reaches a new home base, she says, the first thing that she and Brad do is show the children what is special about it. “Sometimes we’ll go to a place where there are video games…Sometimes we’ll go to a place that has a back yard or maybe a pool.

Having an independent spirit is important to Angelina. “We try to teach our kids right and wrong and how to follow their instincts. When we’re watching tv and they say to me, ‘Is the guy on the screen a bad guy?’ I say, ‘Well, is he hurting someone? Because if he is, then he’s a bad guy.’ I’m bringing them up to QUESTION AUTHORITY [my emphasis], because I think it’s important. I tell them that just because someone is in office or is a policeman or something, that doesn’t mean they have the right to tell you to do something you know is wrong.”

FAVOURITE THINGS. Angelina says that wherever the family goes, she and Brad make a point of bringing certain items with them to provide the children with a sense of contiuity.

    Hi, Lucy.

Le, what issue of People was that quote in? I like it very much. There’s a popular chant like it that we use in rallies and marches: “No Justice, No Peace.”

Also, I sent you an email.

  4. By Lucy

If this is true, hope it has a good approach. Thanks Sherry and hello to all.

  5. By bradpittwantsme

I agree with you, Sherry. The original book is amazing and nothing needs to be changed. Hollywood needs to know when to make things realistic and when to make things, well….Hollywood.

Just read that Angie admitted she & Brad fell in love on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Duh! Did they think they had ANY of us fooled by saying it was afterwards?

I am curious as to how they will adapt this classic, but I agree with Betty that if they stay close to the original story, it coud be interesting.

Off topic, I got my W magazine in the mail yesterday. All I can say is the pictures in the magazine is so much better than the scanned ones. I signed up for a subscription the 2nd week of September.

    Hello to all Pittwatchers.

Off topic: I do a lot of reading and I was trying to see if there is a book out about the Wineville Chicken Murders. This is the case that The Changeling is based on. So if anyone knows of a book could you give me the title and author.
    Thanks

No matter how many stones that the haters will throw at Angie, whether big or small stones, she remains unaffected as she makes herself busy with what is important: FAMILY, HUMANITARIAN WORK, CAREER. In fact, for each stone, it becomes somewhat her weapon and making her stronger everyday to do what she has to do. It challenges her even more to always have a sense of purpose and be useful to what matters most.

She puts her energy to what is relevant instead of minding the negative things that are said about her. She surrounds herself with POSITIVE PEOPLE. People who support or help her on the causes she’s passionate about. Her family who inspires & love her dearly. Her directors, co-actors & crews who respect her. Her supporters & fans who admire her work & believe her advocacy.

As what she said before, she knows the DIFFERENCE OF WHAT IS IMPORTANT & URGENT FROM WHAT IS SUPERFICIAL & TRIVIAL. So, with this in mind, we are assured that Angie will always come out all right as she knows her priorities in life & finds strength from proper sources. That we believe positive people & things outweigh the negative ones.

Angelina Jolie: I Fell in Love With Brad When He Was Still With Jen
    Friday October 17, 2008

Angelina Jolie visits NBC’s Today show October 16, 2008 in New York City.
    James Devaney/WireImage.com
Buzz up!Angelina Jolie reveals she and Brad Pitt fell in love on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith – which Pitt filmed while still married to Jennifer Aniston.

Relive Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s happier days.

“Not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love,” Jolie, 33, says – referring to wanting her kids to see the flick – in the New York Times.

See Brad and Angelina’s most romantic moments.

One sight she’s not ready for her six children to see? Racy internet pictures of herself!

Jolie says she worries, “[Maddox will] look up my name and see some kind of sexy pictures, or read a story about himself that isn’t true.

“There’s a lot we’re going to have to explain to them about how public their family is,” Jolie adds.

Check out adorable photos of Angelina’s kids.

For now, the kids look at mom and dad as nerds, Jolie says.

“What’s going to be funny is when they think Mom and Dad are a little bit cool, because right now, we’re not cool Mom and Dad,” she says. “Even video games, you know, it’s: ‘Mom, you can’t play this. You don’t know how.’

“Oh, they all think I can’t do anything, that I’m just there to snuggle with. But the other day, Madd said, ‘Can you do a cartwheel?’ and I said, ‘Yeah I can.’ And he was like, ‘Wow, Mom,’” she says.

“And I thought ‘Oh, yeah. I can do some things. You wait. You’ll find out. I’m capable,” Jolie says.

The actress says she picks her movie roles based on her kids’ schedules.

She asks herself, “Who’s in school at that time? How can I be sure I don’t do too many long hours? Can the three youngest be on the set every day?

“As long as I can still be with my family, it’s fun. But I only want to do that, and I’m not looking for anything else,” she says.

For inspiration, Jolie looks to her own mother, who died in January 2007.

“My mom, she was a very, very soft woman. It was hard for her to yell, or even curse,” Jolie says. “But when it came to fighting for her kids, she found a strength she didn’t always know she had.

“And there’s a part of [Changeling character] Christine that I connected to her,” Jolie adds. “I kept pictures of my mom in little purses” that she totes in the movie.

Troy was the Hollywood version of the Iliad (Trojan War). The movie was nothing like the written version and was focused on Brad’s character Achilles instead of the whims of the gods and human devotion and frailty under the cloak of war. If they stay as close to the true story, Odyssey the movie should be a success (ie, stick with theme of one man’s devotion to wife, country, and gods despite personal sufferings).

This is Comparative/World Lit 101 and if Brad decides to do the movie I hope he helps it stay to its true and original form, even if it is set in outer space. Other wise it’ll be like another Troy action movie. Much as I am a Brad fan I am also an ancient Greek history fan, and I couldn’t stomach the whole Troy movie. It was badly done and the only interesting scenes were when Brad flexes his stuff.

I loved O Brother Where Art Thou… I also like Sci Fi… I would definitely want to see it. I would suggest Angie as one of the Sirens.

Off topic, there is nice article in People mag. about Angelina speaking about refugee.

I like this quote: ” No one should have to choose between peace and justice.”

Anyone remember “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “Westside Story”, “Clueless”?
It’s amazing what a creative mind can do for the classics.

  16. By Passerby

I remember Brad had to exercise a lot for the role of achilles in Troy, like to get all that muscle. And if i remember correctly Odysseus was a very muscular and strong warrior too so that means Brad will highly not take the role since he most likely wont have the time to exercise but i can be completely wrong.

Personally I’m not a fan of mythology and I think its mostly because of my hatred of latin. (ALL THOSE STUPID DAMN ENDINGS GRRRR) And I had to translate most of the mythologies. But who knows this might be good.

All of the negative comments and articles about Angie over the past two days kind of got me sad. I need to not pay attention to that cr** like Angie. When will I learn to stay away from those sites.
Thanks Sherry for your site, I can always retreat here to get away from it. When will I learn!

Yeah am of the same mind Sherry. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. They should either do it in the right context or leave it alone.

However we could be wrong, and they could come up with a great script and setting/environment. +unsure+

Although I enjoyed Troy, it is widely agreed that Brad phoned in his performance. He wasn’t really interested in it to start with, but Warner Bro and personal reasons made him give in to pressure.

Congratulations, Isacutie, on winning the autographed pic of Brad in Troy at bradpittwatch! I entered too but I didn’t have any luck. :-(
