The Cannes Film Festival is more than just movie debuts and red carpet events, even though that’s the part we get most excited over as fans. After all, we all love to see Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie dressed up for the red carpet.
However, there’s a great deal of business that goes on at Cannes, and it just makes good sense if you think about it. The film festival is swarming with actors, directors, producers, and people who can lay claim to more than one of those titles.
Brad Pitt was obviously busy talking shop because it’s been announced that his film Tree of Life has been picked up at Cannes by TriPictures after being sold by Summit.
This movie has been so under the wire that it’s been hard to really know what it’s about, who is starring in it, and perhaps most importantly – when the heck is it going to be ready to go? Brad is a co-producer for the film and the brief synopsis is that it deals with a man who has seen nothing but sickness, death, and upset since his childhood and how he comes to terms with that reality as an adult.
I’m glad that it’s been picked up, the movie keeps popping up everywhere and is obviously important to Brad. Right now it seems that it’s slated for a release sometime “later this year” in the U.S. but there’s no further detail than that. I’ll keep you posted as more details emerge of course!
Edit: It seems I caused some confusion, and I apologize for not being clear enough. A lot of business deals go on during Cannes and they were seeking distribution for the movie. The movie wasn’t picked up to be shown at Cannes, it was picked up by TriPictures who now have the rights to distribute the film. The Cannes Film Festival is also a great place to do business networking, so I’m glad Brad and Summit found a deal they were pleased with since this will hopefully get Tree Of Life out there sooner than it would have otherwise.

Caroline, i’ve read somewhere yesterday reporting that Brad and Angie already left thursday night (6pm). same reason they weren’t able to attend the amfAR dinner. not sure if this is true though.
I’m wondering if they have left Cannes, because I was hoping for more candid shots. I loved the dinner pictures last year… remember those?
The Denver Post is reporting that President Clinton’s entourage bumped the Jolie-Pitts out of the Cannes hotel, forcing them to move to another hotel due to security reasons. Interesting.

I think Sherry meant ‘picked up by foreign distributors ‘ distribution right and not film itself.
In the background of glitzy festival scene, film producers and agencies are busy with their business=selling their products to buyers who gathered from all over the world. Summit that bought this film was trying to find foreign distributors at Cannes. The report says this film is scheduled to be released late of this year in US. We need more information.
I think I can kind of explain what Sherry means:
Evidently, “Tree of Life” needed some help with distribution costs (getting it into theatres) and it has now found a distributor. These film festivals (all of them) are really to sell small and/or independent movies. Every film festivals has big, showy movies so they get publicity but the small movies (and documentaries) or there to find help with distribution. I believe that “Tree” was probably shown at one of the small venues (away from the crowd) for the real movie people to see and possibly buy.
This is good news since I had heard the producers wanted to try to get “Tree” into theatres by the end of the year for it to be eligible for awards season.
Wow, that’s good news for the film. Malick’s long awaited new film.
Brad, Penn, Malick are all CAA clients. CAA packaged their clients for this movie to support genius Malick to make his noncommercial film ? Their agent Bryan Lourd was in Cannes and I saw his name was on the acknowledgement list of Inglourious bastard, too.
I remember CAA also packaged Mr& Mrs. Smith. Brad, Director Doug Liman , writer Simon Kinberg, producer Akiva Goldsman, and including their first choice Kidman are all their clients.
Whatever movie Brad is on, I`m going to see it.
I’m confused too. Sherry are you saying that another company is involved now, as a result of business done while at Cannes, or are you saying the movie will be seen at Cannes? Sean Penn is definitely in the movie, and the talk about Tree of Life has suggested that the final product is still up in the air. It’s already been a long time since they finished filming in Texas.
Sherry, what do you mean picked up at Cannes? i’m a bit confused. :( Or does it mean they will be back on the 63rd Cannes Festival next year for the Tree of Life movie? Sean Penn is in this movie also right?
I remember this movie. I think it was filmed in Texas, and AJ was pregger at the time. Looks like JP will be walking the RC again. Very popular people and love to see them there.
