Okay folks! Burn After Reading opens in most cities today! Who’s excited? I wish I could see it tonight but probably won’t get to catch it for a couple of weeks. However, I know many of you will be seeing it at some point this weekend – and some of you were lucky enough to catch sneak peeks yesterday! – so let’s get a review post going.
If you see the movie, please leave your comments here. Please, though, be considerate of those who have not seen it yet – no spoilers! Let us know if you loved it, hated it, if it was as good as Fargo, etc.
Awww. Look how happy Brad Pitt is at the thought of you seeing his movie!

Went to see it the second time at 4:45 P.M. It was in the largest theater but there were only 8 people in there. I was surprise, guess everyone was on their way home from work. It was the last show for a twilight ticket. Evidently it does better later in the day and night for them to have it in large theater. They had “The Family that Prey” in a smaller theater.
Don’t want to be a spoilers but the expression on Brad’s face was really funny (the smile) and shrugged shoulders when found and got an unexpected deadly surprise! That look was so innoncent!
Saw the movie last night, it was so entertaining and I kept laughing all the time as well as the whole theater.
Brad and George are funny so are other actors.
Worth to watch again!
Vivian
Mary Ann, he hasn’t changed that much. He did do 12 Monkeys and Snatch, both goofy roles and got Oscar nom for 12 Monkeys.
The difference, I think is that he seems to take time in choosing he’s roles these days, not in a hurry. And by choice,he is working less in front of the camera so he can spend time with his family.
UNDER MOD: my response to Mary Ann’s questions. :-)
Mary Ann, if you’ve never seen a Coen brothers movie, I highly recommend watching Raising Arizona and/or Fargo (Frances McDormand got an Oscar) – BEFORE you see BAR. If you don’t have a chance, just remember that the Coens’ forte is *very dark humor* and violence so outrageous that it’s comic. Don’t worry, no gore. And it’s not violent in the same way as Wanted.
Mary Ann, check out my 9/14/08, 4:16 pm, post in this thread. There’s a link to a Boston Herald article: Brad Pitt, sexiest man alive, is also one of the silliest. Apparently, Brad’s always had a funny bone. He also looked for ways to stretch himself and not get stereotyped as the hunk with a beautiful space and fantastic body. He’s played against type many times, but the public seems to remember him more for his romantic leading man roles and photoshoots.
I think the main difference in Brad is having the family that he’s wanted for so long. He did charitable things before, but now with Angelina and his kids, he’s really blossomed. So Brad is as he’s always been – no different. I think Angelina has brought this out in him more. They both realize there’s a shelf life to being a sex symbol, and there are more important things: family, being global citizens and helping others – giving back, taking more dramatic/comedic roles, producing, and generally being active, creative and useful.
I’m interested in others’ opinions of your questions, too.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I am going to ask a question, but first I have to explain that I am not a big going to the movie type of person. Watch alot of them at home on DVD. Anyway after reading all of your raves about Brad and how good he was my question is: has Brad changed so much since he and Angie got together. Is Brad different, is Brad accepting different types of movies, is Brad just so much more happier in his private life that he has grown into a different type of person? Anyway I would be interested to read all of your comments. Most of you watch alot of movies and you would know him better than I.
Saw it Friday night; fantastic, hilarious and Brad steals the movie from not just Clooney but the other characters too. Although they ARE all brilliant in it, especially Malkovich and CIA boss (forgot his name).
So I guess he has to look out for his life now. (George said last year that if Brad stole the movie he would kill him, LOL ;) )
Ligaya, there was a guy in my screening who was really upset, for the same reason. I think he was trying to reconcile Tyler Durden with Chad Feldheimer.

my feedback – UNDER MOD:
ADORKABLE. That’s how someone at TIFF08 described Brad Pitt as Chad in BAR. . .
ADORKABLE.
That’s how someone at TIFF08 described Brad Pitt as Chad in BAR. I totally agree, Brad is perfect in the role. I hope he does another comedy soon to solidify his comic creds. I’d love it if he mixed up his future roles as sexy, romantic leading man, comic and dramatic movies, with a dash of action. Actually, everyone in BAR is pitch-perfect and hilarious. I think the secret was that they all played it straight – seriously, without winking at the audience. I think that’s the only way to pull off the Coens’ brand of sly, off-kilter, subversive, dark humor.
McDormand is absolute perfection – she’s great in every movie, whether big or small parts. Richard Jenkins the same (check him out in The Visitor). Swinton, Malkovich and Clooney also perfect and on their game. Some of the funniest exchanges were between 2 CIA guys. I have a feeling this is something I’ll love more and more each time I see it.
I went to a matinee and an evening show yesterday. Each time, it was about ¾ full in the biggest auditorium. At the matinee, it seemed to take awhile to set up the movie – then the laughs started coming one after the other. At the evening show, the audience seemed to get it sooner. Lots of laughter and surprised groans. Some young women behind me with their boyfriends kept saying “Brad Pitt! Brad Pitt!” They couldn’t believe Brad could be such a doofus.
I haven’t seen Big Lebowski yet, but I think BAR is on par with Raising Arizona, Fargo and Intolerable Cruelty.
Haven’t seen it yet, but sounds like it will be a good one.
I saw Burn After Reading early showing, Friday night. Very well attended, and people of all ages. Most of us chuckled throughout the whole movie, and many times people just burst out laughing. it was so enjoyable, so silly most of the time. I do wish I had not watched so many advance trailers. It would have been fun to watch these characters without prior knowledge. Loved Brad. Loved George. Go see it.
PLEASE, NO SPOILERS. I agree with Epp1. If it surprised you, that’s a spoiler. A lot of people’s enjoyment of a movie is “spoiled” if they know ahead of time of certain twists and surprises.
It’s like when Homer Simpson walked out of Empire Strikes Back with Bart, and said something like “I can’t believe Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father!” Everyone in line getting tickets all groaned. Gene Siskel made that mistake when he either 1) revealed that a woman was really a man in The Crying Game, or 2) revealed in the Sixth Sense that Bruce Willis was dead too. Roger Ebert couldn’t believe Gene did it.
“Another” Sherry, that is SOOOOO SWEET. I gave my 74 y.o. mom four Team Jolie and “Adopt Me, Angelina” t-shirts that were too small for me. She wore a Team Jolie tee at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, and wore her “Adopt Me, Angelina” tee on the plane to San Diego. :-)

Brad Pitt, sexiest man alive, is also one of the silliest
Being beautiful isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sometimes you want to be respected for your brains and talent. Just ask Brad Pitt. This weekend audiences will find this cinema heartthrob in full silly mode in the Coen brothers’ spy spoof “Burn After Reading.” He’s been cultivating silliness for a long time…
But I can’t think of another movie sex symbol – male or female – who has worked as doggedly to defy that label at every opportunity…
Most of all, he likes playing goofy. I’d put Pitt on the short list of our best comic actors. He’s not afraid to look ridiculous … in fact he courts it.
Meant to add – seconding the Pittwatcher who encouraged us to see BAR this opening weekend:
Opening weekend grosses, with a few exceptions, determine whether films with similar subjects, director and actors will be greenlit again. Every ticket bought on opening weekend is a vote for the kind of movies and talent we want to see.
Please see BAR today if at all possible. The next most important weekend is the 2nd weekend when Hollywood sees how much BAR has fallen off in attendance.
