I believe that the story line would be disjointed and not believable if they were not to return. (They are a character bridge.) Matt can certainly bring comic relief. Also, the new boys could certainly participate meaningfully in the basketball scenes. It doesn't mean they have to be the main characters. I don't see Matt as the romantic lead. But then again...maybe if he is as good at serious as funny he could pull it off. I think they should do fair auditions, and cast it accordingly. Ryan is one of my favorite characters, as is Kelsie. (Kelsey?) In any case, there is room for many talents in a successful show.
