Canadian Idol 6 Top 20 Performances Part 1

It’s time for the Top 20 performances on Canadian Idol.  Last week, four people were sent home after the season’s first results show.  I hope the eliminations scared some people into bringing more to their performances this week since I thought the Top 24 shows (view part 1 and part 2 recaps) were uninspiring, for the most part.

Mark Day sang “In Love with a Girl” and I was disappointed by how much his voice was drowned out by the band.  What I could hear sounded good.  I think he’s got talent and I love his confidence but I am not sure about this song choice.  *sigh*

Jake said that he found the performance not believable and that he has a hard time seeing him singing rock songs.  Sass said that for a funny guy, he sings pretty good and that it was a good song choice.  Farley agreed that it wasn’t that believable but that he sang well.  Zack told him to start being as extreme as he can be since his personality is his biggest asset (ouch).

Paul Clifford chose to sing “Apparitions” and it was pretty good.  I like the smoky quality of his voice but sometimes it gets on my nerves a little bit.

Sass said that he did a terrific job and put a lot of emotion into it.  Farley said that next week he’d like see him try something more energized but that he did a good job.  Zack said it was predictably good but that Paul lacks that manic, rockstar energy.  Jake said that he always picks the right songs for his voice and that he always sings with emotion.  He does want him to pick songs with a few more words, lol…

Drew Wright sang “Neverending
White Light” (let me know if this isn’t the right name!) and I really liked it considering I’d not heard the song before.  I am starting to really like Drew.

Farley said that he would have liked to see Drew be a little more animated.  Zack said that it was boring but that he did a reasonably good job.  Jake said that vocally it was really, really strong.  Sass said that he has a huge natural talent for singing.

Marie-Pierre Bellerose chose to perform “Beautiful Goodbye” and it started really rough, to me.  It got a bit better but I don’t think she should have picked that song.  There were a couple disastrous notes so I hope it doesn’t lead to her elimination.

Zack said that the low notes were too low but the higher notes were killer.  Jake thought there were some really nice moments in the song but wasn’t personally excited about the performance.  Sass said that it wasn’t her strongest performance but appreciated the feeling she put into it.  Farley said that Marie-Pierre should really listen to all of the good advice she got tonight and believes it will help her.

Mookie Morris sang “Naive” and for the first time tonight, I felt like was watching a show versus a competition.  I LOVED IT!

Jake said that he did a fantastic job.  Sass said that he didn’t know that song but she thinks Zack might have found the rockstar he was looking for.  Farley said that Mookie understands himself and that he enjoyed the performance.  Zack said that bar-none, Mookie is the coolest guy that has ever been on the show.

Sebastian Pigott sang “Daydream” and I love his vibe and attitude.  He proves that it’s not just about having the best voice.  He was quirky and silly and just plain cool. 

Sass said that he’s just “got it.”  Farley said that he has incredible charisma and that the song was perfect.  Zack said that, even as a hetero male, he felt a little turned on.  Jake said that the song choice was perfect and that the delivery was great!

Martin Kerr performed “In Your Eyes” and I’m always surprised by the quality of his voice.  I think he did a good job.

Farley said it was a great song choice but would have preferred a slightly edgier performance.  Zack said the versus and falsetto was strong but that the choruses were not so great.  Jake said that it might be his favorite song of all time but felt that Martin didn’t show the feeling of despair that is commonly associated with the song.  Sass said she was sleepy but that there was a cool edge in his voice during the chorus that she would like to hear more of.

Lisa Bell sang “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” and I thought that she tried to do too much to the song.  I think that if she simplified it, she would have fared better because she’s got a good voice.

Zack said that the arrangement sucked and that she can sing but it doesn’t matter. Jake thought she sang it well, he liked the arrangement but that there were some screechy moments.  Sass said that Lisa’s joyous energy shines through.  Farley said that he loves the character in her voice.

Gary Morissette chose to sing “Mr. Bojangles” and, initially, I was horrified by the song choice but it actually turned out okay.

Jake said that he thought he gave a good performance.  Sass loved that there was a mandolin in the arrangement and that she loved his attitude.  Farley said that it was a good song choice and that it worked with his raspy voice.  Zack said that he thought it was good but needs to define who he really is if he’s around next week.

Amberly Thiessen sang “Everything I Own” and I really like the tone and quality of her voice.  It’s so pure and sweet.

Sass said that she thought she did a phenomenal job.  Farley said that she sings really well and that it was a great song choice.  Zack said that there are no words to describe how good that was.  Jake said that he liked how she played with the melody and knew she was going to do an amazing job.
