Canadian Idol Shock Elimination: Amberly Thiessen says good-bye

Amberly Thiessen eliminated from Canadian Idol

Last night in a schocking results night, Ben Mulroney announced that Amberly Thiessen was leaving the show. The first twist came when Ben called Mookie Morris, Theo Tams, and Mitch MacDonald down to the center of the stage. However, he then turned to Amberly Thiessen, Earl Stevenson, and Drew Wright, all of whom were still seated on the couch and presumed to be safe, and announced that they were actually the bottom three for this week.

Upon returning from commercial break, the bottom three were all standing on stage looking a little shell-shocked at their safety being whisked away so abruptly. Ben then announced that the person with the fewest votes was Amberly Thiessen. He then said, “Alright Canada you’ve got a Top 5 and the Idol Mansion has become a Frat House.”

Amberly was visibly upset but managed to give a good, upbeat performance for the audience.

Although there was no time to ask the judges for their thoughts, I think they were clearly shocked by the results with a lot of consultation going on at the table. I wonder if any of them were discussing how quickly Amberly could be signed to one of their labels. The judges were always very clear that they were huge fans of her voice.

I was very surprised too. I had thought maybe Mitch MacDonald was in the most danger because I wasn’t sure how Canada would feel about his performance, but I never once thought it would be Amberly. While I didn’t care for her performance this week, I love the way she sings. It’s a shame she had to go home so soon, thus ruining my hopes for a Mookie-Amberly showdown on finale night.

Were you shocked by the results this week?

i was not shocked at all that amberly went home. i had a feeling that it would be her because she didnt do that great and she was 1st. i didnt want it to be amberly, i thought it was mitch’s time to go home. poor amberly has WAY more talent than mitch yet has been in the bottom twice and went home, whereas mitch has never even been in the bottom before! to me thats not fair. sometimes i wonder what canada is thinking when theyre voting. theres always a shocking elimination every year where a talented one goes home at the expense of one with a bit less talent and its not fair at all. someone ought to do something about that voting system..

I wasn’t shocked that she went home either, because she had been in the bottom three before. Also, I felt her performance was the weakest of the night (although many people don’t vote based on the night’s performance). I also am not sure if people vote based on who they think is most talented. I think it’s partly regional voting, and partly based on who’s style of singing they are into (and maybe who’s personality they are drawn to). So, I don’t think Amberly should take it personally, but just think of it as a sign that most voters (which doesn’t mean most Canadians) prefer other styles of singing.

I think Drew might be next. I think Drew has an incredible voice, but the judges really don’t like him, and that has to influence voting.

I really disliked her so I’m not shocked or saddened at all, lol!

I wasn’t so much shocked as I was furious for the way they did it. So unfair to let her think she was safe and then pull a stunt like that. I thought Ben had more class than that. She was so relieved when she wasn’t one of the “bottom” 3. I WAS shocked that Theo and Mookie were in the “bottom” 3, I should have known there was a catch.
