Brian Melo

Dwight d’Eon
Greg Neufeld
Jaydee Bixby
Khalila Glanville

Mila Miller
Tara Oram

Liveblogging here tonight at 6pm MST! Join the discussion!

Tonight’s theme is #1 hit singles!!!! This should be interesting.

PHOTOS AND HOPEFULLY VIDEO WILL BE ADDED TONIGHT!

Ben Mulroney announced that Rihanna will be performing tomorrow night and is introducing the judges.

Hooray we’re back on the big stage!!! I hate the smaller stage setting especially since it seems to adversely affect acoustics.

Ben asked Zack how the season has been going and Zack said “I’ve been looking amazing this season (I agree since Zack shaved) and Ben said that Zack smells good too.

Ben introduced the contestants! Montage of Rihanna and her career.

Performance #1Dwight d’Eon (did I get it right, Lise?) :)

Dwight’s hometown and life as a fisherman is shown. It looks like he’s got a lot of support.

Dwight sings Matchbox 20’s “Unwell.” I like this song and this was an okay performance. The beginning was a bit shaky but he warmed up and it was a lot better but there were some so-so moments. I did not like his make-up. The crowd is cheering like crazy.

Jake says that he needs to be more interesting but that the singing was strong. Farley says he’s more prepared for the top 10 than the top 22. Sass thought it would have been more interesting if he had sang it better. Zack agreed somewhat with Sass but said that he was a rockstar who was growing.

Performance #2Khalila Glanville

Her footage was of her job at a daycare in Dorval, Quebec. Her family seems very supportive and her father was in tears after being overcome with emotion. Khalila’s friends throw her a birthday party. Awwww….

Khalila sings Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly” in the original arrangement (not the Fugees remake). She is a very strong singer. She had a few nervous moments but she looked and sounded great.

Farley said he felt her singing was intense and controlled and really nicely done. Sass said it was really nice. Zack said it was mature and nice but lacked “wow” factor. Jake said she needs to be more interesting and emotional but that she did just enough to stay in another week.

Performance #3 – Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly’s band is showcased and she reveals that she writes all of her own songs. Mission, B.C. is really excited to have “their Idol” back in town. Carly said that everyone should have a day where everyone chants their name because it feels amazing.

Carly sings the Bee Gees’ “Inside and Out.” She looked great. I loved her hair like that. I guess it was a good choice of song for her and she was pretty energetic. She kinda reminds me of Carly Simon.

Sass said it was so cool like James Bond/Petula Clark. Zack said that he didn’t get it. He actually said she was short on singing and energy. Jake said it didn’t seem to have the right dynamics and he said that she didn’t sing with emotion. Farley said that he agreed with Jake about the emotion. Zack added that she looked amazing on camera and Sass said, “wow, I liked it.”

Performance #4 – Brian Melo

Brian goes home to Hamilton, Ont and explains why he loves his hometown and performs with his band. He says that his family has been the backbone of this whole experience. He said that he believes in what he does and what he has to offer.

Brian sings Chronic’sIf You Could Only See.” He sounded a little breathless but I think he got it together. The backup singers were not great during this performance. What the crap? That’s not fair!

Zack told Brian that he did a good job but told him not to “aimlessly meander around the stage.” Jake said that he was happy to hear Brian sing the song that he sang during the audition. Farley said that he found him a little shaky and lacked confidence. Sass said that she really enjoyed the performance and thought that there was major intensity that she had not seen before.

Performance #5 – Mila Miller

Mila talks about playing the clarinet and how it has made her have more confidence. She says that she has so much support from her family. They showed her at Canada’s Wonderland (I think) – lucky girl.

Mila sings Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” It sounded a little rough and I’m thinking it was nerves because I think Mila’s a great singer (unique, though, like Erykah Badu).

Jake said that it was a tough song to sing and that it sounded karaoke. Farley said he’s waiting to see someone grab this competition and that Mila didn’t do it. Sass said it was “safe”. Zack said that he agrees with Farley that this is the stage of the competition where he expects a bit more intensity.

Performance #6 – Jaydee Bixby

Jaydee is in his hometown, Drumheller, the “Dinosaur Capital of the World” (I can attest to this, I live an hour from there). He says that the support he’s received from his hometown has been overwhelming. He says that he’s been singing since he was 6 years old and wants this more than anything in the world.

Jaydee sings Conway Twitty’s song “It’s Only Make Believe.” He shed his apple pie, blond cutie look and took up more of a “teen idol” hair style. I can’t deny that this kid can really, really sing and he’s got his look into the camera down pat but I’d love to see him sing something from this century, lol.

Farley thought it was a fantastic performance and said that he’s going to be one of the most famous people on the planet. Sass said it’s like he’s been transported from another time and asked “are you for real?” Zack is wondering how long ago he got off his horse the way he walks around and compared him to Michael Buble.” Jake said that Jaydee is like the next Bobby Darin and was the first electrical performance of the night.

HOLY SMOKES – That not so subtle ad for Telus phones with Dave Kerr was actually pretty funny.

Performance #7 – Greg Neufeld

Greg goes home to Abbottsford, B.C. and talks about how supportive her family has been through his two runs on Canadial Idol. Greg performs in front of a crowd and says that he played ukelele in elementary school and jammed with a school-mate in his teens.

Greg sings The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done.” And he dressed appropriately and, although he sang it well (Greg’s my favorite). He was entertaining though and incredibly nice to look at ;)

Sass said she liked it a lot and broke away from his usual style. Zack said that he broke away from stuff he should be singing into stuff that he shouldn’t be singing. He said that his upper register was like nails on a chalkboard. Jake said it was more intense than anything he’s ever done before. Farley said that Jaydee was the fighter and Greg was the opponent in a way that said “I’m taking it back.”

Performance #8 – Martha Joy

Martha said that people have told her to try out for Canadian Idol in the past. She showed that she took salsa lessons which has made her more comfortable with her family which has made her a better performer. She talks about how close she is to her father and the support she gets from her family.

Martha sings Celine Dion’s “Power of Love.” She has a good voice but there’s something that is so annoying. What is it? Please, I’m not putting her down but I need feedback here if it bothers you too. She had some sketchy moments during this performance but I’m sure people will vote for her.

Zack said that this is one of the weirdest night’s he’s ever experienced. He said that she is the best singer here. Jake said that she was vocally strong but that the performance was slow, as if she is “milking” them. Farley said that he’s convinced of her skill set and said that she is undeniably amazing. Sass said it was technically pretty good but found the performance sleepy.

Performance #9 – Tara Oram

Tara went back to Hare Bay, NL and she showed her with her family. she said she toured with a country band for almost 4 years and tries not to let anything hold her back.

Tara sings Shania Twain’s “You Win My Love.” I love country music but I found this a bit boring and that little smile she does when she pauses drives me crazy. It wasn’t terrible, though, and she looked nice.

Jake said that this was her best performance of the season. Farley said that she was a lot more physical and said that young women would want to aspire to be like her. Sass said that the performance was strong and that she knows her voice well. Zack said that there are some limitations to her voice that are not great but that she has gotten better at working around them.

Performance #10 – Matt Rapley

Matt goes home to Regina, SK and showed his church where his father is a pastor. Matt went back to his old high school and he was stunned by the reception. He performed for them which made him feel good.

Matt sang Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.” I think he picked the wrong key. I think he could have sung it in a higher key and it would have sounded better. I don’t have anything bad to say about his actual singing, though. It was not the most exciting performance and it was kind of a mess. He seemed unfocused and rushed.

Farley said that that arrangement was not as well known to most but that he thought it went well. Sass said that she loved that and said that he glides through the song. Zack said that he was surprised that Matt didn’t pick something cool. Jake said that he understood what Zack meant and, although Matt sang well, he didn’t get a lot of vibe from his performance.

Uhhh…. this song wasn’t cool but “You Win My Love” and “Power of Love” are really cool???? Okay….

There are only two people in that list that I really truly care about: Greg and Mila. Everyone else can go.

  2. Tiffany

GO GREG! GO Carly! GO Mila! The rest…Meh.

I know what you’re saying about Martha Joy and I figured it out while watching – she is TOO much like Celine! She has slightly creepy smarmyness to her – Not to be rude – I think it’s because she is only 16 but looks 25. That’s my 2 cents

  3. Bored Idol Fan

Sadly this is one of the least talented final 10 in Canadian Idol history. In part, we can thank the judges and their silly decision making process. I knew there was trouble when Jessica Sheppard was not put through. Will we ever know the true reason behind it……let’s call Michael Moore……..As for tonight, there really is only one person with star quality – Jaydee Bixby. He took a dead show and livened it up right in the middle. Tara Orem is also talented as is Martha Joy. The rest really ……..well…………we really need to vote off Jake, Zach, Sass & Farley so that a true talent top 10 field is presented. If these people think that Montana and Tyler are what Canada really is listening to……then…………..well……….they’re completely out of touch.

I hate Martha Joy so much. Then again, I hate Céline (please don’t flame me, I’m french too!). I agree that she looks older, and I find she shows no personality and is just cheesy overall.

Dwight needs to stay away from the eyeliner and cover up that fivehead! He’s pretty decent, though. So are Greg, Jaydee and Carly.

I really like Brian for some reason. However, I did not like the arrangement tonight (by the way, the band is called “Tonic”, but I still love you Jeanne!). I know it’s hard to make a song fit into 90 seconds, but it just didn’t feel coherent. I think he sang alright, though.

I feel kind of “meh” about everyone else.

  5. Howard

Martha Joy can sing and you hate her because ….she is the best singer in this competition, so Kimmy if you hate Martha Joy so much you gonna hate her even more when she becomes the next Canadian Idol, so live with. Try singing Power of Love and where it takes you. Get a life, because she undeniably amazing hey…

  6. Kimmy

Howard: I love that you just assumed that I can’t sing. Martha is a good technical singer, but she doesn’t have much else going for her. You can’t make a living singing Céline and Whitney, and if you want people to fall in love with your songs, there has to be some sort of substance behind them. She doesn’t have any.
I suggest you “get a life” instead, if you’re so offended to learn that not everyone likes the same singers as you!
