CBS Daytime News: Guiding Light Is Axed

O-M-G. I am getting goose bumps while writing about this very sad news. One of CBS’s 4 soap operas has been canceled. GUIDING LIGHT is done and over with. The oldest (72 years) daytime soap opera in the history has been let go. The show has used a different style of shooting their episodes in order to save money for a few years now but I guess it didn’t work.

Guiding Light started in the radio on 1937. It went onto a TV format after 15 years on the radio. GL has been making people cry, laugh, angry, and happy for 72 years.

I refused to believe it when I first heard the news because GL used to be one of my favorite shows. I may not watch it regularly as I used to but I still try to keep abreast of what’s going on in the fictional town of Springfield from time to time. GL actors and their daytime colleagues has shared their reactions regarding it’s cancellation.

The last episode of Guiding Light has been reported to air on September 18th. That’s definitely something I would be watching that day. I hope you do too. And I hope out of respect for the soap opera community, ABC Soaps will not try to air something big on that day to counter the ratings on CBS. Let Guiding Light go out with a bang. I hope the old characters will come back. Just a thought.

PS : The image says 70 but this is the only image I could find so please bear with me.

Why did the Guiding Light writers leave us hanging on Jeffrey? It was a disappointment there. I am really going to miss the show. I don’t know why
another station didn’t pick them up.

  6. CBS Daytime : As The World Turns Is Canceled : Soaps on ABC – Soaps on ABC: All the best of daytime soaps. General Hospital, All My Children, One Life to Live

[...] in the footsteps of Guiding Light, which was canceled September of this year, is another CBS daytime show being taken off the air. As The World Turns is saying goodbye in 2010, [...]

i dont think should take our shows off the air …they should ask people what they want to watch .and not just take their shows off the air i will not watch anything they put on in place of as the world turns. when nbc took another world off i said i would not watch anything that came on in its place and i have not yet.i think they should leave as the world turns on the air!!!! and let people watch their shows in peace…

i think they should bring GL back. it is better than what took it’s place. i have watched the show for years i hate it is not on and can’t beleive what took it’s place it is sad lost a good show to replace it with a bad one.

I was born in 1937 when Guiding light began. I have been watching since I was a child, even while teaching (30) yrs. I recorded every program to watch when I got home. This was a time for me to relax, grade papers, and prepare myself for my household duties. My remarks are just a way to tell CBS what an injustice it is to close this show, and now you are taking away As The World Turns, which I have also watched for years. I know that stations want to appeal to the younger generation, but are the senior citizens not considered? These two programs have such good story lines and excellent actors. I have tried to watch other soap operas’ but they are just not good. Please consider finding a way to return these soaps to your schedule or sell them to another channel. If both are dropped, I will no longer watch CBS or purchase any products that are advertised there. Consider what Seniors like, we need some shows that are not Law, Crime, wierd, Doctor, news, and reality shows! Help our final years be ones that have choices that we enjoy.

I am in total agreement with a previous comment from Sandra Holt..I to am 72 and have all the same reasons for watching the Guiding Light through there struggles and mine….if CBS can’t give us a few day time hours for programs we have grown up with and fill the time with so much foolishness I will no longer watch CBS…..there is nothing on there now……to bad you lost a daily faithful viewer.
