Children's Laureate believes that the Harry Potter books are "boring"

I found this story pretty amusing, actually. The Children’s Laureate of the UK, Michael Rosen (author of such notable books as We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Mustard, Custard, Grumble Belly and Gravy) believes that the Harry Potter books are….get this….”boring.”

His main premise seems to be that the plots of the books are too complicated for young children to follow. I agree with his point if you’re talking about kids perhaps 7 and under, but my 7 year old (admittedly precocious – of course I’m not prejudiced) is zipping through them all right now and is already on to the fourth book in less than three weeks.

Do you think that the Harry Potter books are too complicated for young kids to follow? What’s your opinion on this? When did you first start reading the books, how old were you?

no way are harry potter books too hard for little kids to understand! i was seven years old when i started reading them… and i understood them… if i didn’t i don’t think i’d still be in love with the entire series. i’m am reading it to my younger brother (6 years old) and he understands the books and likes them. it doesn’t take much for stupid people to complain about harry potter. it’s very annoying. i wouldn’t recommend harry potter to 4-year-olds but once you are 6 or 7 i think harry potter is very suitable for readers.

Harry Potter taught my stepson to love reading, he despised it before he started. He was seven, and completely understood them. Bravo to JKR for helping an entire generation appreciate the written word.

I started reading them in 5th grade and read them all in a month or two. It would’ve been sooner if I had my own copies of the books. :)

If I would’ve know how WONDERFUL the Harry Potter series was before, I would have read them so much sooner than I did.

Over all I don’t really think they’re to hard for kids to read. There might be a few words that smaller children don’t know but they can ask right?
