Not a big surprise by any means, but The CW gave freshman series The Vampire Diaries a full season order and ordered five more episodes of Melrose Place, according to E! Online.
This gives a total of 18 episodes for The Vampire Diaries and 12 episodes so far for Melrose Place.

So why did The Vampire Diaries get the full season order? The ratings have been extremely good for the new show. Melrose Place, on the other hand, hasn’t been doing much better than The CW’s canceled-show-that-wasn’t-given-a-chance (The Beautiful Life) in ratings.
But, Heather Locklear has already signed on as a guest star and other original cast members have made appearances. The CW is hoping Locklear can bring in higher ratings.
By the way, did you know that Melrose Place is going to kill off a main character in a future episode? I’m trying to figure out who they are going to kill off.
