Really good interview with Daniel Radcliffe in which he talks about Quidditch, the books, and interjecting his own unique ideas into the storyline:
When I asked Dan if he was sad to learn that Quidditch wasn’t going to be in this film, he responded:
Dan: I wasn’t absolutely, particularly disappointed, because Quidditch is a sort of very, very painful thing to film. And so I was actually…every time I was reading a Harry Potter book and there’s a bit where either Harry gets banned from the team, or Quidditch gets cancelled or something the problem is, I was like, “YES!!!”, and um, but I mean I hope fans won’t miss it too much, I mean… and then of course in this book, Harry is stopped from playing Quidditch so I wouldn’t…but Quidditch has fallen by the wayside in this one very definitely.
Are your scenes with Umbridge appropriately nasty? (Question courtesy of HPANA)
Dan: Yes definitely. There are very, very dark scenes. I mean they are very, very exciting and Imelda Staunton is one of the reasons why doing this film has been my favorite. She’s an amazing actress and she’s a really delightful woman.
During filming, do you ever re-read parts of the books to help you better understand what your character is feeling in certain scenes, and do you let your knowledge of events that are going to happen in the sixth book influence your reactions? (Question courtesy of Veritaserum)
Dan: No, absolutely…that I never do. Just simply because if, you know, because in real life no one knows what’s going to happen to them in the next couple of years and so it would sort of be very wrong to play Harry with the foreknowledge of what’s going to happen to him. As for re-reading the books, I tend not to. The time when we’ll read the book is just sort of in the early stages of pre-production just in case, so that when I get the script I can go, I can read it, and think if there’s anything that’s been left out I can go back to the book and actually say…there’s this scene which I think is fantastic and I’d love that to be in the film and if it’s appropriate it will be worked in. But, so reading the book during filming is generally something I don’t do simply because I’m so busy reading the script and learning the lines.
