The reviews of Daniel Radcliffe’s debut last night in Equus on Broadway are in, and they are very favorable! Here’s a few:
Ben Brantley of The New York Times said Radcliffe, 19, wore his part of a suburban stableboy who commits grotesque crimes against horses “like a tailor’s delight — that is, a natural fit that allows room to stretch.”
USA Today: “the Harry Potter star puts to rest any arguments that his appeal should be limited to moony adolescents and maudlin grown-ups.”
“In his impressive debut in a major stage role, as the disturbed adolescent in ‘Equus,’ Daniel Radcliffe significantly helps overcome the fact that Peter Shaffer’s 1975 Tony winner doesn’t entirely hold up,” – Variety
The stage novice also outpaces his Tony-winning costar, Richard Griffiths, who portrays the self-doubting psychiatrist charged with unraveling the religious, sexual, and parental psychoses that led to Strang’s violent outburst. – EW
Short and well-built as a jockey, Radcliffe makes a strong impression as Alan Strang, the young man who mysteriously blinds six horses in a barn with a knife. Richard Griffiths, also from the “Harry Potter” series, is his shrink, Dr. Dysart, who gets to the bottom of Alan’s pain. – Fox News
Despite his almost total lack of stage experience – seven years of Potter in his magic kingdom suggest Shirley Temple rather than Laurence Olivier – Radcliffe, with his luminously intense eyes and fragile but wiry body, looks wonderfully right as Alan, the 17-year-old British boy besotted by everything equine. – NY Post
Pretty good! Here’s a short news video from Holland that shows actual footage of the play, as well as Kathleen Turner giving her opinion on Daniel’s performance:
