The 60 Minutes interview reveals that David Beckham has an option in his contract to buy the Los Angeles Galaxy and rumors are flying that he will be exercising this option with manager Simon Fuller.
However, no one will comment on these rumors, so it could be total speculation.
“We don’t comment on rumor or speculation,” Simon Oliveira, Beckham’s spokesman, said to The Associated Press on Thursday. “David’s focus at present is on playing for the Galaxy and his country.”
The Galaxy and the league wouldn’t comment either.
“Our policy is we don’t comment on potential owners of Major League Soccer teams,” MLS spokesman Dan Courtemanche said to BusinessWeek. “Ultimately, if individuals or groups are interested in purchasing a Major League Soccer team, it’s their option whether or not they want to express it publicly. We’re a private company, and those matters remain private.”
It’s great to see that the league is being so tight-lipped about such private matters. I personally think buying the team when he reaches retirement is a fantastic idea, but only if David thinks its the right move for him to make.
