David Cook seemed extra emotional last night and I’m sure he was happy to have a great performance but, most importantly, his brother Adam, who has advanced brain cancer, was in the audience for the first time last night.
According to Good Morning America, Adam thought that attending a taping would be impossible but his community rallied together to make it happen. David performed Mariah Carey‘s “Always Be My Baby” and surprised everyone with his rendition, which earned him major praise.
“That was the best performance all year,” judge Randy Jackson said as he finished the song.
Cook’s brother Adam is a 36-year-old lawyer and his brain cancer has now spread to his spine. Thanks to the Cooks’ hometown of Terre Haute, Ind., nothing could stop him from being there for David’s big moment.
“We made a dream a reality, and he wants everybody who is battling something like this to know, you gotta keep fighting,” said the Cooks’ longtime friend Darrick Scott.
So sad… My heart goes out to David and their entire family.

It really warmed my heart when I first read that the community where Adam and his wife live made it possible for them to be there last night. I could have done without the multiple camera pans to him and his wife, but all in all, I think AI handled the thing really well, without making a circus out of it all. David was fantastic last night, and I couldn’t be happier he got such a great night, such great praise from the judges with his brother there for him.
Truly, truly wonderful.
What an emotional night last night was for the Cook family, and for us viewers who were fortunate enough to know ahead of time that Davids brother was going to be there. I cried right along with David.
What a truly humble man David Cook appears to be.
