Dawson's Creek Show Runner Tom Kapinos Has Some Things to Say

Wow, I am in shock at what some people will say years later about the people they worked with on a particular show. Although this article is completely negative, I felt it was necessary to share it here, since it’ll be splashed everywhere anyway (or already is!).

Dawson’s Creek (which Katie Holmes starred in) show runner Tom Kapinos had some harsh things to say about the show and the stars. I couldn’t believe what this man said! He spoke at a Los Angeles Times’ Envelope Emmy screening panel about his show Californication yesterday (June 2).

The stars of Dawson's Creek

Check out what he had to say about Dawson’s Creek:

In talking about the genesis of Californication, Tom explained: “The idea came out of my own misery of working on Dawson’s Creek. I came out here to write screenplays, and I ended up on Dawson’s Creek, which was very lucrative and fun, but it was not what I wanted to do.”

Well, you have to start somewhere right?

He didn’t stop there either.

“The experience was miserable,” he continued about Dawson’s. “But it was a four-year boot camp. It was like going to TV grad school and learning how to run a television show. Anybody on that show who could make a decision was allowed to run it at some point. I inherited the very awkward college years, and I almost ran the show into the ground. But I learned everything that I needed to know about how to run a show.”

What did he have to say about the show’s stars? Nothing nice, that’s for sure.

When the panel moderator asked, “What was it specifically that made it such a challenge?” Tom dropped this bomb: “It was the four monstrous actors at the core of it.”

The audience erupted in laughter as Tom continued, saying: “They were very young, and they got very famous, and they made life miserable for any writer or producer on the show.”

What do you think about Tom’s comments? I would love to hear what you have to say!

*KATIE*..where are you, we need you, come and set the record straight for us.

Hmmm, he’s either got a strange sense of humour, a little off-the-wall. Or he’s really telling it how he saw it back then. In all, it sounds like the show was actually an era of HIS life that wasn’t very satisfactory.

Funny that he would complain now. I don’t see Katie being a Prima Donna. Most of her co workers really like her. I have never had any one complain about her attitude.

I think that it is atrocious, selfish, and unappreciative of him to say such things. For him to go on a rant about his experience from his perspective is quite alarming. I would not want to work with him on a script or on anything at all for fear that he might later in the future bad mouth me. Whether it be true or not, we all know that once something bad is said, it is hard to take out of the eye of the media. People seem to love bad gossip.
I am appalled!! This is so ugly in taste.
Hmmm, I get the feeling he might have a hard time getting work after this irrational comment.

Julie what is going on at this site. I write things and they don’t show up and 2 times when I hit submit IE has to close shows up.
I wrote some things about Tom Kapinos but thats when IE closed.
He said good things about Katie and Josh in the past.
The college years were the worst on DC IMO and it wasn’t the acting that made it that way it was the writing and direction the show took.
IMO Tom Kapinos is full of(fill in the blank)

15 mins of fame. I really see how 4 kids might have it hard to
adapt to a new sundden success. But, c’mon, none of them seemed like the DIVA type, just the opposite. The show went downhill after Williamson left,
in terms of storytelling. The show did all in all pretty good, and the actors were actually the ones who made me stay tuned, up to the final episode.
Every single costar Katie has, parises her, I really believe that she’s naturally nice.

@kate – I am not sure what’s going on. I am sorry you are having problems. I will asked the tech team if anyone else has had similar issues. Since we have uploaded the new template, there have been some problems. For example, I was getting a 404 error when trying to comment.

Sorry about the issues and hopefully they will be resolved soon!

Tom who???? he just want his 15 min of fame. If he wants to be known in the industry he should focus on his work and stop saying bad things of someone else just to be in the news >=[

    Thanks Julie.

Tom opening his mouth, especially at this late date, is extremely unprofessional behavior. Anyone in the industry knows one does not badmouth a co-worker….PERIOD. It’s not done. It might be done in production offices or privately, but it’s NEVER done in a public forum.

isn’t this the same guy who added commentaries to the dvd sets? don’t remember anything there about having other than fun and hard work! whatever, I loved it all (and still enjoy the memories) so if there was conflict it must have been that management speak ‘creative conflict’ and so he should be grateful rather than a sourpuss! my father’s maxim was: if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything; pity Tom hasn’t done the same. (thanks for a great site, by the way; lovely fun)

I love how people think he’s gettin blacklisted for these comments. He’s running “CALIFORNICATION”…are you all that uninformed?

OUtside of Katie Holmes…this guy’s cache and career are miles beyond the other “stars” of Dawson’s…

Not to mention…if you ever work on set with ass headed actors…you love it when somebody finally calls them out.

AND…don’t buy these kids as being nice becasue they’ve got squeaky clean images…courtesy of a publicist.
