In a shocking news that rocked all through out the daytime soaps industry, NBC fired Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn. Yes, you read it right, John and Marlena, the Luke and Laura of NBC Daytime have been let go in an effort to trim the budget expenses.
So, in order for Days Of Our Lives to continue airing until 2010, they had to fire their highest paid actors. See, that doesn’t make sense to me at all. For non-viewers, it might be. DOOL is nothing without John and Marlena. They are the highest paid actors because they earned and deserve it. They are the 2 major characters on that crazy show.
Maybe the show should’ve fired small characters that have no history connection to the show. Characters that fans could live without. Days of Our Lives has a lot of them in my opinion. And then, have a cast meeting and explain to everyone that they’ll all have to cut back on their paychecks to keep the show going without firing major actors. You can’t hope to improve the show under tight budget if you fire the people that makes the show. Not only is it stupid, it’s disrespectful. Business is business, as usual for the big honchos. Well, that 2010 might become end of 2009 without John and Marlena on the show.
So how would John and Marlena exit Salem? The couple will finally reunite after months of John’s “amnesia” on January and will just be off-screen. Maybe they’ll go on a vacation or something and never come back.
Can you imagine Salem without John and Marlena?

I heard that the pay cut idea was floated at AMC and Susan Lucci actually too a pay cut. I think that is the best way to go. Win-Win.

I am outraged by this news. Once John and Marlena are off the show I will never watch again.
Now this is ridiculous! You’re going to get rid of the couple that made Days Of Our Lives interesting? I’ll tell you who you should get rid of instead. ABE & LEXI!!!! Totally waste of time and nobody cares about their storyline anyway! I’m done with this show! You always find a way to disappoint me!

I don’t know whose bright idea this was to fire John and Marlena but it sucks. I have watched this soap since it started. The chemistry between these 2 are dynamite. I am a senior and look forward to watching the soaps especially this one. I feel I know them personnaly. So now you bring in 2 new ones for what? less money. 1 is a shrink to talk to John and the other one is a doctor to care for Nicole. Bad move.
Do you ever wonder why this show has not won an award for years? I know you have to down size but there are alot of other ones that can be let go. It will never be the same without them.
Can I imagine Salem without John and Marlena? NoOo. When they fire the two best actors in the show they are only making things worse for themselves. They will lose viewers BIG TIME, and then it is bye bye Days. I really hope that they realize very soon that this was a huge mistake. It´s very strange you know, almost everyone are saying what a big mistake this is, but they just won´t listen will they? Well, there will be consequences, you´ll see! When John and Marlena leave, I leave with them, and I so understand if they are angry right now. They were the reason I watched, and that goes for many others also. Hope they will get their feet back on earth soon and see some reality.

I was astonished by this news. I think there were so many other options than this, so I don’t understand why they decided on this route. Get rid of the more unpopular characters with little/or no story line, like Abe & Lexi (but don’t u dare touch the real DOOL families: Brady, Deveraux, DiMera & Evans). Get rid of the teenibooper group and young children. Ask the staff/actors to take a paycut. Look to other corporations to see what they are doing as alternative methods for saving money during this terrible economy. I’m sure there are other reasons they aren’t letting the general public know about, but I think this is going to have long-reaching reprocussions. However, it is the soap opera world, which NEVER truly says goodbye to any character…even the dead ones. I bet we’ll be seeing Marlena & John again someday.
I Have been watching days of are lives since i was a lil girl and my mother watched it for years and I was Complety Shock when bell and shawn left actully pretty dissapointed …

Salem will never be the same. I have been a faithful viewer since I was a little girl. John and Marlena and Bo and Hope are the true backbone to this show. This is truly devastating to Day’s viewers, and the show will probably lose alot of its viewers.
I have been watching Days for more than 30 years. Why M & J? Why not Victor & Stephano? Mrs H is never on anymore (not even sure she is still alive in real life), Caroline, Maggie, Abe, Lexi and I can think of many more! Why bring back Brady? And now they add Raef…so I guess they fire the good ones and keep the boring?
i have watched DOOL since 1965.I even record it everyday now to be sure to see it. I am disgusted about John and Marlena leaving and then Steve and kayla. You guys need to get your head out of where ever it is and realize what is important- great actors, consistency and an audience that will save you by watching everyday .you guys have made the biggest mistake ever doing this. i have 7 family members in different areas and we are all through with your show after 40 years. it is a very sad day.
Now I heard it all. Please just cancel the show because it is not DOOL anymore. Bringing back Steve & Kayla only to fired them. The last days of John & Marlena was a rip off for us. The whole show should’ve been about them, but that’s ok because from what I read they are heading toward CBS so I will be following them. Days is dead as far as I am concerned.Now you are breaking up Bo & Hope. You just don’t like happy marriages or anything close to it. You need to get a life and another profession because you stink in this one. As for Mr Corday he should be out of this business too. For years this show was the #1 show but ever since Mr Reilly died the new writers killed it. You know what, I tape the show every day but now that is done. I’m glad I have every wedding on tape so I can watch it whenever I want and remember the good DAYS. A good thing about taping is fast forwarding and I do that when that whiny little brat Melanie is on Cannot stand her voice or the storyline. Wise up people. You lost alot of fans.
I hope they read these comments although I doubt it. It was a HORRIBLE idea to let go of John and Marlena, and Steve and Kayla. What are they crazy?? Wow, I have no desire to really watch it anymore, it’s depressing.. Maybe they did it to get everyone crazy and then bring them all back, just to get publicity and people excited again? I hope so. I really can’t imagine this permanent.
Since Steve & Kayla left the show there is no reason now to watch it. There is no story line I am interested in. Even Kate is getting boring. You are making this Melanie the star of the show well in my book she isn’t and never will be. Now Tony is going off too and there won’t be anybody left except the young ones who don’t know whose bed they are going to be in next.
You ruined a good family soap by firing the veterns that made it so.
I have a suggestion. How about cutting the salaries of the writers,directors and even Mr Corday so we can bring back the real stars of DOOL? Did they ever think of asking John,Marlena,Steve & Kayla to take a pay cut? NO. They just said “as of this date you are gone”

I AM IN SHOCK that marlena and john got fired because of “budget issues”. I began watching DOOL with my mom back in the 70’s. I continue to tape it daily; the only TV show I am loyal to. I am sickened how you treated the stars and how there is no concern for their loyal fans. Patch and Kayla were “golden oldies” that I loved also. J & M were the “Alice and Tom.” How can you weed them out and totally revamp the show with a new younger generation? What about fans that have been loving them for almost 40 yrs?!! I am considering not watching daily since it is not the same with all the new kids and juvinile themes. If J & M and Steve and Kayla don’t return I might bid DOOL goodbye after watching for 40yrs.
