Deerhunter Played LPR

There was a lot going on at (le) Poisson Rouge, including the likes of Laurie Anderson. The evening began with Icelandic artists Olof Arnalds and Skuli Sverrisson perform their albums Vid og Vid and Seria start to finish, with surprise appearnces by Laurie Anderson, Amedeo Pace, Eyvind Kang, Nico Muhly, Anthony Burr, and Peter Scherer. The music was lovely and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” was simply beautiful.

After that whole thing, Deerhunter performed a late show at 11 p.m. (le) Poisson Rouge continues to do a good job straddling the avante garde and pop divide. Lead singer Bradford Cox was in a jovial mood, cracking jokes about the name of the club and missing a meeting with Lou Reed backstage because he was busy buying a Velvet Underground compendium at the Strand. Their music was good, but the sound was a tad muddled and there were some technical difficulties, but they got through them, playing many songs from their upcoming sophomore album, Microcastle, as well as from previous album Cryptograms and the EP Fluorescent Grey. The new stuff seems to be a bit more poppy than previous releases but it still has a lush sound with heavy beats rolling in and out. They’ll be back in NYC on November 7 at Music Hall of Williamsrbug and November 8 at Bowery Ballroom.
