Uh, I’m sorry but I think this is lame. The almost unheard of group, Doxology, is alleging that American Idol contestant, David Cook, ripped off their version of the Beatles tune “Eleanor Rigby.”
Okay… First of all, let me remind everyone that this show is about performing other people’s songs. If this show was about creating original music, then I could understand this blatantly transparent attempt to capitalize on the situation and gain attention.
Second, how many ways can “Eleanor Rigby” be rockified? Seriously, this is lame. It sounds like “Rigby” gone rock. Nothing super unique to me,
Third, grow up! When a band complains about someone covering their cover of another group’s songs, I cry foul. Sorry, Doxology, but I don’t see a point to this…

Well when american idol copied a “live”(the band) song arrangement without crediting them, they invited them to perform on stage. So does this mean that because doxology is an unknown band they shouldn’t get the respect “live” did?
There are many ways to “rockify” a song. And there is a seven note rule that musicians follow to prevent them from creating “carbon copies” of other music. And hearing david cooks’ and doxology’s version I think that that rule was definitely broken.
Credit is all they want (which they deserve) they don’t want royalties from profit from itunes.
Oh Rebecca… I don’t even know this band Doxology however, after reading comments like the one you left, I feel inclined to continue to chime in for the “little” guy… Again, from the press release posted on the band’s myspace page it clearly details what the real issue is… and if you buy the track on iTunes you will see what the issue really is… This is an Arrangement and Composition issue my friend… geez – why can’t people get that through their thick skull? People want to try and put together “powerful hurtful statements” when all the band is looking for is acknowledgement of the HARD work around the work that was lifted from them. Your comment around “David Cook not having time to memorize someone else’s version…” This is EXACTLY why he did it… remember him saying… “this song just fell into my lap”… push rewind on your Tivo and you will see.
Anyways -I am not looking to get into a words battle with you… or anyone for that matter – the truth speaks for itself – believe what you want… the truth will come out.
Take Care
Ok, so who can say FOR SURE that David Cook even knows this band or has heard their version of this song before? People are saying he ripped them off says so because THEY SAY SO… but where is the proof? David’s version sounds similar because it is the same song, that is just common sense.. how can anyone say it is the exact same- he had less than one week to prepare the song.. I don’t think he would have had time to memorize someone else’s arrangement of the song and perform it perfectly- note for note- in that short of time.. this is just some no name band trying to get 15 minutes of fame from American Idol.. which is sad for David Cook, since he deserves the credit for the song that he performed.. and if Doxology thinks Idol is going to give them a “shout out” in front of millions of viewers- for free- then they are sadly mistaken.. Simon and his producers make American Idol for ONE reason- TO MAKE MONEY- point blank.. they have no reason to mention some small time local band from Seattle.. mark my words, no one on Idol will mention this band’s name.. they have no reason too – this band didn’t perform the song, they aren’t on the show week after week in front of millions of fans so why should they get ANY of David Cook’s spotlight for all of his hard work.. they are just trying to get their band’s name out there…. no one heard of them last week and now, people are saying how great and original they are…. yet, they are asking for credit on a cover version of a Beatles song that has been re done many times over.. yeah, that just shows how “original” they are… LOL
It would totally different if he had performed a song they wrote and then claimed it as his own and did not credit them as the writers, but in this case David Cook and American Idol recognized the true owners of the song- The Beatles….
David Cook did NOT borrow their arrangement- he rocked that song on his own and it was brilliant!
Yo J… I hear ya and understand your position. It’s just from what my friends who are “experts” in music composition say – the recorded version on iTunes is the exact same as Doxology’s and that warrants attention… The contestants would typically say something when that guy Seacrest interviews them post performance…
Anyways – I don’t think it is petty… I think to keep things honest… people just need to be more honest.
I bet we will get to the bottom of this very soon… Proof is coming from what I hear.
Anyways… I agree – they are a pretty good band. It’s too bad this even needed to be an issue.
Have a great week.
I get that it’s about the arrangement, G. My problem is that Doxology’s isn’t so unusual that it couldn’t have come from any good rock mind.
Doxology is a good band from what I can see. This just made them look petty, in my mind. Sorry.
When is a contestant supposed to say that? How many groups and artists out there are thinking “OMG, we did that song just like that!” I mean come on.
Besides, does ANYONE have any PROOF that David had even heard of Doxology before?
And, by the way… I went out and checked out all of Doxology’s songs on their myspace… this band is SOLID and their focus is on ORIGINAL music… I think it’s unfortunate they had to call out David and Idol over a cover… but, it still is the right thing to do.
Ericka – I am sure the band is TOTALLY proud of their version…. they created the arrangement. In the music industry – it is only professional and the right thing to do by acknowledging where an artist gets the music… The Beatles were definitely acknowledged for the song… the “unique” arrangement of the cover went suspiciously un-recognized. All David needed to do was give the right and just shout out to that band. It has been amazing to read the blogs and stories of the folks focused on the EXACT wrong thing here… Oh well, I am sure those that KNOW what they are talking about will settle it all. Latah
it’s david cook’s version.. and he was able to pull it off… doxology must react if david cook ruined it… which, of course, wasn’t the case..
i’m a big, big fan of david cook. and i do believe that he nailed it and IF EVER his version was of the doxology’s.. then the group must be proud.
You all are missing the point… it is NOT about the Beatles … it is about the ARRANGEMENT and COMPOSITION of the song. READ the release… and then re-think your thoughts… I am Doxology Fan from Seattle… check’em out – they are ALL about originals… Geez.
ha ha ha…dont worry jenn is my younger sister
