Yesterday, PittWatch reader Kim left a comment in this post, raising an interesting debate question regarding Angelina Jolie and action roles. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a proper discussion post here on the site, and I figured this would be an excellent time for it.
Angelina Jolie is well-known for being arguably the best female action star in Hollywood. Other women have done some great action roles (Milla Jovovich immediately springs to mind, as does Sigourney Weaver), but Angelina is top-notch. At a recent awards show, she was the only female shown in the action film montage. That says a lot.
One of my favorites of all her action roles is still that of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. I have watched both of the movies numerous times and they never get old.
I think the biggest appeal with her action roles is knowing that Angelina does most, if not all, of her stunts herself. She does have a stunt double, but from what I’ve understood, her double mostly does the action first so they cam mark it out for the cameras/lights and so Angie can see what she’s going to be doing. I was blown away the first time I saw a behind-the-scenes special on Tomb Raider and saw how much Angelina did for the cameras. It was amazing!
The question that was raised is basically this: Is Angelina Jolie getting too old to take on heavy-duty action roles? And you could extend that to: How old IS too old?
It’s a timely question because I’ve read here and there that some people do think she’s getting too old to be the major action star, rolling around with guns and jumping off of moving vehicles. It was brought up again in a comment on MTV in a post about the possibilities of Wanted 2. Someone wrote:
[...] Jolie seems to be getting a little too old for sexy-action roles.
My opinion is pretty straightforward. I think Angelina Jolie is definitely not too old for action roles. Not yet, anyway. First of all, she’s definitely still sexy, there’s no doubt about that. Proof can be seen right here.
Second, if she’s still capable of doing her own stunts then she is most certainly still capable of pulling off the action role. She looked perfectly believable in all the stills we saw while she was filming Salt (like the time she was scaling a building in New York!), so I have no doubt that the movie and the role will be amazing.
Third, as long as someone like Harisson Ford can still play action roles, there’s just no reason why Angie can’t do the same.
I figure that when Angelina – or her body – decides she’s too old to play the action roles anymore, that’s when she will indeed be too old to keep doing it. Not a minute sooner!

I think those who think she is to old (not even in her mid-30′s!!) are youngn’s who have no concept of age. You know like little kids who look at someone 20 and think they’re old . . .
Let’s hope she doesn’t find them and kick their a**!
I just could not imagine anyone else playing “Lara Croft”..Angelina “owns” the character….I’d love to see her again playing LC. God bless her.

If she is too old to play action movies then there are alot of aging male action movie actors who should be very, very scared. C’mon, she is awesome and would be the major draw for ANY action movie. You go Angie!

I will go to the movies to watch Angie no matter what the role. I love her action roles. I hope she never stops making movies. She’s a true Star.
I’m glad that most of you voted for “no”. She is still amazing and so sexy woman. Keep going Angie! :)

I too was going to mention Jennifer Garner, she also is a good action star. People (Men) want the sex symbol also. I think Jennifer is more wholesome looking now. No one has the look of danger, and the smooth moves of Angelina. I see no reason she can’t keep going, she is so great to watch.
No, she’s not getting old. Men continue to be action stars well into their old age. Why shouldn’t women??? The men who do it into their older years just get better machines and toys and support from technical gurus. Women should have the same on-screen privilege.

My answer is absolutely NO! Angelina Jolie is the best female action star of all times! No comparison. And, I think she would be capable of doing action movies even when she is 60.

naahh!!!! she’s only 32 years old …… and i think she’s not that “TOO old”…. not even old….. but i agree if angie is 50 or 60….. that”s make sense…..
im 29 couldnt attempt anything like angelina does. she is fantastic. a true role model. people aspire to be her. so roll on when she 40 ill still look upto her :)
kimmy – thanks for that wonderful story in mirror.co.uk. Although I consider Mirror a tabloid I´m willing to believe that story. Mad sure is like a ´mini-dad´of the family. He sure loves to take care of every child he meets – not just his own siblings whom he certainly loves a lot. And it´s obvious Pax loves his older brother a lot. He sure mimicks his every move and gesture. And that sure annoys Mad from time to time. Shi sure takes good care of the twins and sure loves Vivienne a lot. But she sure also loves her little brother a lot too. And Zee sure tries to mother Shi and those sisters certainly are good friends and play together a lot. God bles the JPs!
Maybe the reason why we haven’t heard any age issue or there’s no age discussion on male action stars in making action films is because GENERALLY, women is unfairly perceived as the weaker s e x, & men as the stronger one physically.
It’s always assumed actors are still fine even they are older, that they are always capable to handle physical demands in an action film while actresses aren’t.
