Discussion Post: Brad Pitt roasting Mel Gibson

Okay PittWatch people. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a good discussion post, let’s open one up now. This idea comes courtesy of a local radio host who was talking about Brad Pitt at the Spike’s Guys Choice Awards over the weekend. The host wondered if people would think that Brad went a bit too far when he roasted Mel Gibson at the ceremony.

For those of you who are still unaware, Brad Pitt made fun of Mel Gibson’s DUI arrest in 2006 – when Mel presented Brad with the award, Brad stepped to the microphone, turned to Mel and said, “Thanks Sugartits!”

“Sugartits” is what Mel Gibson called the female cop who arrested him back then. Here’s a clip:

For the sake of clarity, the host didn’t state himself whether he thought this was crossing a line or not, he just threw it out there. I didn’t listen long enough to see if anyone called in with thoughts, but I wondered what you thought.

Here’s how I see it. We all do stupid things in our lives. There are dumb things that I did at various times and I’m eternally grateful that I was not a celebrity and didn’t have cameras following me around during those phases in my life. Mel Gibson was completely intoxicated (and stupidly driving!) and it’s a shame that he had to use a sexist slur in front of cameras, but that’s part of the danger of being a celebrity. If you do dumb things, it’s going on record.

I don’t think Brad went too far in his joke. He didn’t bring up any of the far worse things Mel has said in his life, he brought up one that was just plain stupid and teased him for it. I thought it was funny that Brad used it. Hopefully Mel did too (while I don’t care for him personally, I do think he’s a great actor).

The thing is, part of Hollywood is satire. Look at shows like Saturday Night Live and Mad TV – they make a killing and a living off of making fun of celebrities and politicians. Heck, SNL has repeatedly made Angelina Jolie adoption jokes and I fully admit to cracking up laughing over them.

Life is way too serious sometimes, especially if you stop and think about the economy and the horrible news on the air every night at 11 pm. Without some humor – especially the kind where you can poke fun at yourself or those around you, all in good fun for the sake of a laugh and nothing more – what would we have?

I laughed when I read about it, and I will laugh when the awards show airs on June 21st.

What do you think? Did Brad Pitt cross a line with his roasting? Or was it all in good fun?

(Thanks for the video link Sharis!)

i don´t know…..Brad seemed arrogant but i guess that was part of the joke. Mel got himself in this situation (the arrest) well….now he has to live with people making jokes about this – and “sugartits”!LOL i thought that was an hilarious thing to say for Mel – disrespectful towards the policewoman, but i´m sure she paid him back:D

@joliepittfanatic: basically i agree with you about women beeing that nasty towards other women…..but i know many men who talk like that about their surrounding people too….LOL
its just that they don´t say it out loud when women are around, its during their guys-talks…..:)

Angies birthday tomorrow…i bet Brad is on his way to her….all these enduring breakup rumors and pregnancy rumors really start to get on my nerves…

I see nothing wrong with Brad joking on Mel. I’m sure Mel didn’t either. He’s the biggest joker around, so I’m sure he wasn’t offended or anything.

Also, for the atmosphere of the event, it wasn’t out of line. An awards show for guys, who when they get together, they rag on one another and go all macho. It’s what guys do.

Brad was just being a funny guy.

I have never seen these awards before and the video didn’t work completely, but the little bit I saw was alot men having fun. Probably having a few drinks and acting macho and silly. Nothing wrong with that. As for Mel I agree with everyone here who says he is a great actor, but as a person he leaves alot to be desired. Brad always appears to me to be a polite and well mannered person, but every once in a while we all act up.

It was classic Brad. He’s got a ferocious sense of humor.
