Disney Society’s Exclusive Interview with Ryan Newman

The Disney XD series Zeke and Luther has been one big hit and it truly is a well written and very funny show. It appeals to both boys and girls, which is always a bonus! Disney could not have put a better cast together who are funny, have great chemistry and enjoyable to watch.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan Newman, who plays Ginger on the show. She’s the little sister, the only girl on the show and she does her part so well! You may know her from the movie “Zoom” with Tim Allen or Hannah Montana, where she played a young Miley. I loved speaking with her and she is so nice! Enjoy the interview.

Disney Society: When did you decide that you wanted to be an actress?

Ryan: When I was about 2, I started begging my parents. I would point at the TV and say ‘I do that! I do that!’. So, eventually, when I was about 3 1/2 my parents finally gave in and we started working with an agent and then doing print, commercials…and now, TV and movies.

Disney Society: How did you get started in the acting business?

Ryan: I started doing print, modeling and commercials. Then, I moved on to TV and movies when I was about 6.

Disney Society: What was your first big job that you were totally excited about?

Ryan: Probably the movie "Zoom" with Tim Allen. It was a big thing for me because I was only 7.

Disney Society: What was your first job with Disney?

Ryan: My first job with Disney was Hannah Montana, playing a young Miley.

Disney Society: Did you have to audition for the role of a young Miley?

Ryan: Yes, I had to audition for it and the same day I went to a call back. That night we heard that I booked it and I think it was the next day that I had to go in for filming.

Disney Society: What was it like being on the set of Hannah Montana? Was it a lot of fun?

Ryan: Oh yeah, it was awesome. Especially since I had already worked with Mitchel [Musso] on Monster House, so it was nice to see him again. I hadn’t seen him for like a couple of years maybe…something crazy like that.

Disney Society: Zeke and Luther sure is a big hit on Disney XD! How did you land the role of Ginger?

Ryan: It wasn’t easy! It was a very, very long process. First there was an audition and then pretty soon the call back. Then there was a chemistry test for a mix and match type thing and network. Since I hadn’t done the mix and match much, I had to go to the table read to see the chemistry between the characters that were cast. So yeah, it was a pretty crazy, long process.

Disney Society: I can’t imagine how much fun it is to work with Hutch, Adam and Daniel….are they as crazy in real life as they are on the show?

Ryan: Hutch is pretty much like his character. Adam is nothing like his character, he is the complete opposite and Daniel isn’t really like his character.

Disney Society: It really seems like you all have such great chemistry on the show.

Ryan: Oh definitely and the boys are so great with me. They never leave me out of anything…because of the age difference. They’re like 3 older brothers and just make me feel so special. And especially being the only girl…they are just so sweet.

Disney Society: What is a day like on the set of Zeke and Luther?

Ryan: Well, normally I have to get in early in the morning…like around 7 or 6. I grab a little something to eat and go over to hair, makeup and wardrobe. Then I will either go to the set or go to school for a little bit. Then we’ll film and have lunch, film more, more school.

Disney Society: Are you currently filming or are you on hiatus right now?

Ryan: We are actually filming season 2. We are all pretty excited about that.

Disney Society: Tell me a little bit about your character Ginger.

Ryan: Ginger loves playing pranks on her brother. She’s very smart, clever and self-sufficient. She also loves to outwit and outsmart her brother. And she’s always looking to make money.

Disney Society: How are you and Ginger a like/different?

Ryan: Well, Ginger is incredibly outspoken and I’m not like that at all. I don’t like to pull pranks on people either.

Disney Society: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

Ryan: I have an older sister.

Disney Society: And you don’t play pranks on her?

Ryan: No (she laughs).

Disney Society: Well, that’s nice of you!

Disney Society: What is your most favorite episode so far?

Ryan: My favorite episode so far would have to be the first one, Bros Go Pro. I got to be their manager and wear a business suit.

Disney Society: Do you have any upcoming projects you can tell us about?

Ryan: Well, we’re not done shooting season 2 until June, so it’s hard to do anything else besides that. And we have to leave things open in case there is a third season.

Disney Society: What do you like doing the most, shooting a TV series or making a movie?

Ryan: I like them both so much! It’s just so much fun. Doing a TV show…you’re that one character for so long and movies, definitely not as long. I just love to be able to be different people. With a TV show, it’s fun to see the same people everyday and get to know them so well.

Disney Society: When you aren’t working, what do you like to do in your free time?

Ryan: I live on a cul-de-sac and my best friend lives two doors down, so I’ll just go knock on her door and we’ll play outside and ride our skateboards. She has a trampoline in her backyard, so we’ll go do that. And I like to dance and sing and other stuff like that.

Disney Society: Do you have some advice you could give other kids who want to act for a living?

Ryan: It’s a very hard industry to break into. It took me about 7 to 8 years to get this show. It’s really hard and it can take a long time, but you can’t give up if this is what you really want. Just keep practicing, take classes and stuff like that.
