Robert Iger, Walt Disney’s CEO and president was quoted as saying that the computer is quickly replacing television sets as children’s primary choice of media outlet.
“In the years ahead, broadband on the computer will be the primary source of entertainment for kids,” he said. “It’s just as important to them as the TV set now.”
In response to this fact, Iger says that Disney is beefing up its internet presence in markets such as China and Australia. They are also taking social media for kids much more serious, which includes making changes and upgrades to Club Penguin, a virtual world for kids.
Another clue that online presence is huge for any company, is Disney’s iTunes sales of movies and television episodes. They have sold around 4 million movies and 40 to 50 million TV episodes during its 18 month partnership. Wow!
Bottom line: kids love computers and that’s where they are going for information and entertainment.
