Even if you're not fortunate to have an entire staff to clean up after your every mood, it's still fun to pretend.
You could tape this photo to yourself while you do the dishes and wash the trifle stains out of the carpet. It's all about being creative, people.
You may not be able to snap your fingers and make the Downton Abbey castle appear, but making your place British-themed is the next best thing.
Besides, you've always wanted a reason to buy a pillow with Queen Elizabeth's profile on it.
Tweed! That's right, gentlemen, get your tweed on or at the very least a spiffy suit.
As much as we'd all love to don those gorgeous dresses the Crawley ladies wear on the show, most of us just don't have that in our wardrobe. Second best, and almost as fun, are feather headpieces or flower-covered large-brimmed hats. Oooh... don't you look like a Countess now!
When your guests walk through the door they'll want to start with a bit of something before you get into dinner. Do some research (ideally tasting research) and find a selection of British cheeses to offer.
What's a Downton Abbey inspired drinking game without British beer?
Although these little things are traditionally more appropriate for a lunch or picnic, they'd still be a fun appetizer to follow the cheese plate. You know, because Dowager Countess of Grantham fancies them.
Yes, you read that correctly. The Brits do love their beef and they do love their beer, so it only makes sense to combine the two.
If you end up making this, let us know how it tastes. It looks a wee bit shady and definitely not something the Crawleys might dine upon, but hey, it has Guinness in it and a flakey crust! Win-win.
Look at that layered dish of fun! Trifle is a tradition British dessert and is so easy to make.
Even if you don't have a trifle dish to show off all the lovely layers, any large bowl will do. It's just layers of cake, pudding, fruit, cream and all over again until you reach the top. It's decadent and can serve a bunch of people easily.
Nothing says "I'm fancy and I'm at Downton Abbey" like a proper after-dinner drink like brandy.
For those who aren't in to brandy, Earl Grey tea would be a most gracious option for the teetotalers.
And what's tea without crumpets? Not much.
Although you and your guests may be full, you may want to put out a few crumpets for those all-night-long nibblers.
Even if you're not fortunate to have an entire staff to clean up after your every mood, it's still fun to pretend.
