The girls probably did not care about his character flaw that much if exercised at a different place and time but in this case they knew Emily would notice and all hell would insue. That he was so stubborn to ignore their advice and additionally turned out to be a coward who would let some innocent lose their job over his stupidity was what really ticked off Lorelai and left Rory embarrassed beyond belief.
