‘Wedding Bell Blues‘ is one of my favorite episodes in Gilmore Girls. After all the turbulence that Richard & Emily went through in previous episodes, this is a triumphant and beautiful moment for them, renewing their wedding vows. Of course, all the other love drama makes it fantastic too – Rory going after Logan (so not like Rory, yet so triumphant for her!) after he purposefully made her jealous for no reason (theme!). And then there’s the heated argument between Christopher and Luke.

Let’s look at that argument. Luke, already uncomfortable in his suit around the Gilmore family, is greeting by Emily & Richard with some snooty commentary about his wrinkled pants. That sets his bad mood off, no doubt. Emily, realizing that Lorelai sees Luke as someone she’d like to marry, is even more dead set against the pair.

When Lorelai realizes that Christopher is at the reception, she confesses to Luke about seeing Christopher after his dad had tied. The timing of the confession seemed guilty to Luke, and he becomes quite curt with her, and bridles when Chris tries to assert his relationship with Lorelai by mentioning “that kid of ours.” Lorelai tries to pacify Luke while Chris watches them grumpily, getting drunk, then stalks off to sulk about Lorelai and the day she first kissed him, the “greatest day of his life.”
So, you mix one part angry, distrustful Luke with one part jealous, self-loathing Chris and you’ve got yourself a recipe for disaster. When Chris returns to the table with Lorelai and Luke to share memories of his times with Lorelai, that’s the last straw. When they all catch Rory making out with Logan, it’s almost like Luke & Chris are competing about who will be the most ‘fatherly’ with Rory.
Chris gets mad at Luke for being a father figure in Rory’s life and yells that he and Lorelai belong together. Emily’s puppet strings are apparent in his venting and Luke gets the wrong idea, thinking Lorelai has no plans to stay with him. Lorelai makes her choice and goes after Luke, until she’s interrupted to get a photo for the wedding.
I’m not surprised that the fight happened. It seemed inevitable that Chris & Luke would face off. But is Luke letting his trust for Lorelai slip? Why? Does he believe Lorelai loves Chris more? Or is it Luke’s lack of confidence that he can be what Lorelai deserves?

I felt like I should share this…
I think Luke has always considered Lorelai’s world as a threat to their relationship, especially because the Gilmores make him feel that.
He didn’t want to go in the first place and Lorelai made him because he just can’t refuse her anything. I agree that she should have prepared more, especially with the clothes thing.
All this makes him feel very insecure. And icing on the cake, he realises that Lorelai has been hiding things from him. He knows the deep bond she shares with Christopher, so he can’t truly believe that their night was innocent.
Even though he’s been in love with Lorelai, or at least attracted to her, from the very first moment they met, he always keeps some kind of distance with her. That’s who he is. He has trouble committing. He probably feels clobbered in this world which he knows nothing about.
I don’t think he questions Lorelai’s feelings fro him. They are quite obvious. But at the same time, he knows that Christopher is a big part of her life (and Rory’s life) so he probably wonders of she still considers Rory’s father as a possibility.
Actually what “shocks” me more in this episode is Lorelai’s total lack of reaction when C. is throwing his tantrum. I find her reaction very weak. Basically Christopher is despising Luke, telling who she should be with (very emilyesque) and trying to make her forget all the pain he caused her and Rory. Yet, she barely says anything. She sees how much Luke is hurt and she doesn’t stand up for him, she doesn’t snap at C. Well, she does but only once Luke is gone.
She’s great in the next episode where she clearly exposes her love for her burger boy. And then Luke is the one disappointing me because he gives up too easily…
But that was the drama the P-team wanted to create and I have to say that the episodes following their first breakup ar just awesome!
Good points RaeDae, but lets face it Luke and Scott played AAA baseball. Lorelai is the show she is major league. Any guy would put up with a lot more to be with her. But the next four episodes where classic Gilmore Girls. Amy Sherman- Palladino was on a roll.
Luke was probably angry at being made to feel inadequate when Lorelai could have prepared him better for what the event would be like – even if she didn’t think Chris would have been there, she could have told him they could change at the event, so he would have avoided the slight from her parents about the wrinkled pants. She also could have warned him about getting “Totsied” before he ever arrived, so he’d have known to keep his eyes peeled and avoided getting “Totsied.”
So it isn’t just that he is looked down on by Emily and Richard, but he could have been prepared for the situation, and been told earlier that Lorelai had gone to comfort Chris when his dad died. He probably felt like everyone else was privy to information he was not given, and that can make anyone feel inadequate. So he probably feels at that point that Lorelai is not a very good girlfriend, keeping him so much in the dark
